the problem often is when we presume we know other people's intention. i truly doubt parents want bad things for their children. i believe when my mom or dad scolded me, she/he was worried about her/his son. and she/he wanted her/his son to make it in life. initially i was angry like most other children out there. but when i reframed her/his intention from 'she/he disliked me' to 'she/he loves me and that's why she/he was angry with me', i became free.. so challenge your presumptions. parents are not the naysayers; but their children believed their parents are.
The other commentors are right but they miss the point, it is a symbol. It shows he does not care about his appearance because he truly knows his worth. If you can back that up with real worth, all the sudden a gross nose breather becomes an attractive differentiator. You cant pull it off until you are as worthy as he is though

He was born with a deviated septum and has had nose surgery’s. It helps him breathe.
