Fun Fact: Ye Bayiy was the only immortal because he loved his friend and his friend loved him back, but not the same way. He was in love with his friend, while his friend didn't love him that way. Meanwhile, as the real words spoken by Adult Chengling say (not everything that's said in the dub is what the actors were actually saying. They needed to tone some stuff down), Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu were soulmates that loved each other the same way, so their hearts were 100% aligned. It's as if they're one being, so they're each others' furneces and they're destined to fuel and protect the other for eternity.

It's subtle, but there are some cool details in the end, there. 1.Chengling's daughter is Nian Xiang, which means something like "remembering/missing Xiang". 2. They refer to Xiao Lian as "aunt" so she's not the mother. 3. The boy doing martial arts is doing the 18 moves of [I forget] which wkx used to prove his identity. 4. The father of the boy is Deng Kuan, Xiao Lian's love interest (I suspect their love story was a sub plot that was cut, meaning the het couple disaster endings are not universal).

It's basically explained in the lip reader vids that Chen Ling tells the kids it was their love that kept both of them alive during the process, and that Wen Kexing actually says "love you" to Zhou Zishu as his hair is turning grey. That was apparently muted for censorship reasons, and there were several instances where voice actors dubbed over the original lines...

You hit the nail on the head lol. Apparently adult Chenglings original story (what the actor says, as opposed to what the dub put in) explained that the cultivation technique would only work for both people if their hearts were aligned (ie they loved each other in the same way). I even heard that YBYs actor has said that's why he's alive and the friend he did it with isn't, they loved each other but unfortunately not in the same way.

Rewatching this with you brings about so many new emotions.
One of it is for the actor that played Zhou Zishu, Zhang Zhehan, who has been deemed by the Chinese public as irredeemable now to the point of a whole career blacklist. This show had so many great quotes like "Bad people can be forgiven if they put down their killing tools. Good people shouldn't be sent to hell after they do something bad right? That doesnt make sense." This quote hits terribly hard because unlike his character's words to Wen Kexing, he had no Zhou Zishu in his life to give him that same opportunity. :(

Tbh I don't think either Wen Kexing or Zhou Zishu were more ahead than the other on the redeption scale initially. They were both very low. ZZS was an ex assassin who had kworded a lot of innocent people, entire clans, on the accusation of treason from Prince Jin, while Wen Kexing... well, we all know that you can't become Valley Master by being kind and vulnerable. So all the better for the story because it was a full journey of redemption for the both of them, both having taken ugly paths because of the struggles they had in life, and both learning to do better and wish to actually live.

Ahhh it's the final episodes. Thank you so much for reacting to Word of Honor. I thoroughly enjoyed this journey with you as I rewatch the show. To me it has a layer of a bittersweet feeling knowing the fate of the show in its home country and one of the leads. Your reaction truly made the process of accepting the whole situation much more bearable.
Wen Kexing played by Gong Jun was truly a force to be reckoned with. This is such a perfect role for him. Lao Wen is an amazing character and just so iconic. Personally, after the rewatch, I came to appreciate Zhou Zishu (played by Zhang Zhehan) so much more. I caught things that I did not after the rewatches and it gave me a lot of feels after realizing it. Ah Xu is that type of character. I also love that the two leads are mature men around 30 and it really did require the actors to be people with a lot of life experiences to play them.
I also really appreciate that Word of Honor just managed to use a lot of het tropes in Wuxia dramas and made it work for a queer story. The show is so tropey as a Wuxia drama that it's amazing 😆. Fun fact, the combined cultivation scene in the end in the armory is a dual cultivation (it's basically a metaphor for doing the deed lol) which is one of the tropes in Wuxia. But, usually, the two leads would take off their clothes. Yeah...
If you are reacting to the concert, there is no English subtitles if you managed to find the one that is uncencored. I think it's fine if you watch the censored version with the English subtitles and watch the cut part after because they only cut a few seconds that it didn't make that much of a difference to the whole concert in general. Also, will you be reacting to the behind the scenes and interviews later and make a google doc for this show? And will you also be checking out the novel later (Faraway Wanderers by Priest)?
I hope you have a lovely day and thank you once again for the reaction ❤️💙

A marvelously unhinged quëër way to end a marvelously unhinged quëër series.
That added meaning to the hairpin just made it that bit sweeter. That WKX would so easily give his family treasure to A'Xu for safekeeping and that he knew even without telling him what it meant that A'Xu would still take it with him and treat it with importance just because his Lao Wen gave it to him.
Love that they became that obnoxious immortal couple that just gets wrapped up in each other in the middle of doing something, ignoring everything else to start another dance-fight without end.
Such a super heartwarming little detail that Chengling named one of his kids after A'Xiang. He never forgot his big sister 💜
"Oh you know I love a box."
"Can both of them just be alive and fine already?!"
"The number of gifsets I'm gonna make about hands!" Girl I told you they didn't play when it came to handholding in this show!
"It's just one gäy thing after another. I'm being steamrolled by homosexuality and I really can't handle it. OOOH, don't remind me! This call-me-by-your-name bullsh!t, stop!"
And as a bonus since I mentioned the sad news at the end of The Untamed reaction series, I'll throw in at the end of this one that my family is getting a new puppy!

11:47 that is EXACTLY correct and it's not even broad queer strokes, that is LITERALLY how the story goes. A lot of people have already explained why in the comments but I just feel the need to scream it from the rooftops because I can't believe it happened, but they dubbed over Chengling's actual lines to pass censorship and lip readers found that he was actually saying the reason they survived is because they mutually love each other, that's the thing that's necessary to survive the technique that's LITERALLY, ThEIR GAY LOVE SAVED EACH OTHER and I -

First of all I love the title ! I just want to say I love how thought out your opinions are and as a literature major I love when other people are, how should I say this, on the same wave length with the things they focus on, maybe? Yeah, this show is a real underdog story and I really appreciate all they were able to do because if Cql had minimal budget Word of honor only had pocket change and a few loose buttons to work with. I too like Cql better but in my mind they aren’t even in the same category. Like there are shows that I love and the there is Cql.
I don’t yet know if I’ll watch Guardian reactions because that show hurts my soul. If word of honor made changes to accommodate censorship (like making zzs and wkz just good people in bad circumstances because in China they main character can’t be bad) then guardian butchered the story… The leads have great chemistry though, so there’s that. But I really love the novel so it painful to watch. If you didn’t know (well you probably do) guardian and faraway wanderers (WoH) novels are from the same writer.
I should stop rambling now. Thank you for reacting to this amazing show, you reactions are the bright spot in my week!

I feel about the same as you regarding The Untamed and Word of Honor - WoH is amazing (great job, MLs and support cast!, and particularly Gong Jun), but TU is on another level. It shows in how the novels are written, too - I couldn't get enough of Mo Dao Zu Shi, whereas (any) Priest novel, I could take it or leave it at any given time. But at least they ended up together :)
I liked the production values, myself, for the most part - and I loved WKX's makeup and outfits (particularly when he goes into crazy mode. ZZS's backstory is so lacking though, I couldn't enjoy much of his journey, aside the interractions with WKX. I mean, I guess a lot (or at least some) of his origins story is told in "Lord Seventh" (the novel, there's no drama yet) from where the prince and his lover the shaman Wu Xi are coming from, but I didn't like the start of that novel either. Oops. Also, there's not a lot of memorable music (for me, at least, as compared to many other wuxia and xianxia dramas), particularly considering how WKX is carrying that flute around for a long time. And they went through that poor forest scenery so many times, I began recognizing it as soon as it came in on another scene :D But all's well that ends well.
The best thing about it - other than the actors and outfits etc - was the fighting scenes choreography. Each and every one of them is absolutely perfect. All hail the action scenes team!
I won't be joining in on The Guardian reactions :( because I haven't seen the drama, and the novel bored me to tears from the very first few chapters - also another Priest novel. The talk about it also isn't very encouraging, I hope to be proven wrong eventually, but not now (or soon, either.)

Basically for the ending of ep. 36 YBY straight up lied to WKX.
He used the same technique in the past with his friend and both of them were immortals, sadly his friend didn't last as long as YBY and died because even though they loved each other and were soulmates, the "love" they both felt was different, and his friend didn't feel the same way as YBY for them to be aligned though each other forever.
However, to test Wen Kexing he lied to him saying he would die in the process of saving A-Xu to see if he was really capable of giving his life for him. Probably already knowing ZZS felt the same way since well he was willing to die if his soulmate wasn't there with him.
You should watch "Lip Reading for SUGAR" by AvenueX to see all the things the show offered before it was brought down by censorship:")

    • @nikkishy3024
      @nikkishy3024 2 роки тому +6

I think it's because both parties need to be willing to "die" for each other in order for rhis to work. So with YBY putting in that idea into WKX's mind, WKX was already in that "imma die for my man" mentality which worked haha
Also, I don't think I can support AvenueX's content anymore since she had spread so much misinformation in the ZZH case and was part of the hatemob on weibo when all of that went down...and her videos are still up meaning she is still profitting from this drama? @@nikkishy3024 I'm not, like, a huge fan of AvenueX (I just like her videos and her insight), but... can you point me to the video where she "spreads misinformation about ZZH's case"? I just rewatched the segment about this issue from her video from August the 14th, and the only inconsistency was she said he paid for entrance and he 100% knew where he was - which was proven false later. But no one was really sure about it on August the 14th! It was misinformation everywhere, no one was 100% sure what really happened. And AvenueX didn't even say anything especially negative about him (more like "it's his team fault they didn't warn him" etc., like, she was just telling the news in a somewhat professional way). So idk, I saw a few ppl saying she was literally a part of hate mob (like she personally destroyed his career), but never seen any proof of that. Was this in one of her later videos? Or only on her weibo? I'm just genuinely curious, I don't want to argue or anything ^^

I'm ok with reactors reacting to her WOH videos though, because she did do a good job and make non Chinese more appreciative of the drama. If I'm not wrong she posted in her community post or something. It wasn't in her videos and she was talking about her hatred for the Japanese because someone related to her (can't remember details cos I was very angry seeing that) died in the war becauseof them. @@PlainAndSimpleNinja as a person who can read Chinese and has gone looking on AvenueX's Chinese social media after ppl started saying how bad a person she is on weibo, my honest opinion is that people might be a liiiittle bit harsh on their assessment of her. She did repeat some misinformation, and was definitely on the bandwagon of righteous-nationalistic-fury-ZZH-hate, and she complained about her international viewers and commenters to her Chinese followers. But she was in general, rather quiet and restrained in comparison of, well, everyone on either side of the issue at the time. Still, I find that I can't watch her videos anymore, particularly the ones on Chinese dramas.
Maybe it's that she's been in the Chinese entertainment industry and seen its dark underbelly, and in her words, and I paraphrase: "no one is innocent in that industry". But I've been noticing in her past videos on c-ent scandals, and in her livestream video shortly after the ZZH incident, that she seems to have to sympathy or empathy for the affected celebrities of these scandals, and spares no thought on how the "justice" being carried out for their wrongdoings look more like a mob of jackals going for exposed throats rather than true justice, and she seem not to much care about a person's career, their life's work, their achievements being destroyed, or the collateral damage to hundreds of other people's work just because they worked on the same show with the celebrity, nor does she seem to see anything...not quite right with what is basically government-lead and -sanctioned extreme cyber-bullying. Rather, she's kinda gleeful, and "eating melon" as the figure of speech goes. In any case, she's just one human person, and like any other human person, she has her strengths and her flaws. It's up to you to decide whether you accept those flaws.
For myself, it's more about my disappointment with China as a whole. There's so much progress that's been made, and particularly in the past decade, so much good has been done, even though you'll never hear about it on Western medias. But these recent events just felt like all that progress meant nothing, that everything can regress to the dark times of decades past, at just a word or two from the higher ups. And I just can't bear to see all the Chinese celebrities in variety shows and dramas all perfectly dressed and made-up and smiling and laughing as if none of this ugliness is going on around them, and I can't bear to see AvenueX's videos talking about these dramas as if there is nothing going on outside of their happy, sanitized, fantasy stories.
However, it is very rare to come across someone who has such good understanding of both English and Chinese, and can explain Chinese things in English so well, and who would do all the explaining for free. Whatever anyone might think of her, her videos remain some of the best sources you can find on UA-cam, if you are an English speaker and you want some deeper understanding to some of the things you see in Chinese dramas.

@@catsidhe181 OMG I am so happy to find a fellow english-chinese speaker with the same sentiments! You phrased it really well. I completely understood that with her personal familial (?) connection to the Japanese war, she would have strong opinions about this, but I really disagreed with how she rather destroy another person's livelihood, gleefully, and also spreading misinformation (even when she has had followers telling her otherwise) just because it supports her beliefs. The way she approached the topic, you'd thing ZZH partook in the war crimes himself when he was just being stupid and ignorant.
I was drafting out a reply to the comment you replied to but you said it better that I would have. I just wanted to add this: I don't hate her, but I really can't watch her videos anymore. Just like how she is accusing ZZH for not considering the consequences of taking pictures near the shrine, she is ignoring the obvious hate mob that she was partaking in and fanning with her online influence. When I researched it all, if he had taken a Justin Bieber-esque shrine picture, I would completely understand the backlash, but even so the extent it had gotten was terrifying and just something I would never stand by. But he hadn't taken a picture at the shrine, in fact even Japanese senior officials needed to make an appointment and wait for a series of approvals before visiting, not like what she said "visiting = worship".
On top of that, there was one comment of hers that really put me off. Might be a personal thing, but it was really the final straw: She would talk about how the western audience were overtly sensitive on wb and then allude the same about chinese audience on yt. And that is rich coming from her because as a chinese myself, I am very aware of how the chinese are super sensitive about social and political issues. The censorship is proof enough. She likes to portray herself as wise and level-headed but she is just "melon eating", which isn't a horrible thing, but puts me off when you are acting like you are higher then everyone else. But this part here is just a personal sentiment, I know not many will agree :)
I agree with you, she has given me a lot of insight about the industry, but I really dislike that she is the only option we have. She has somehow obtained some sort of monopoly and now I am lacking that unique insight into things.
But after the last few months of not watching her videos, I don't feel like I am missing out lol
I just wanted to add this link for people who want to see some of the debunked accusations all in one place: teddyfoxfluff.wordpress.com/category/clarifications-english/
The chinese entertainment industry has so much potential, but it is hindered by the political chokehold. Not everything needs to be political, not everything needs to have an agenda. Sometimes, entertainment should be...entertaining. It should be a way to escape and enjoyment. Whenever celebrities make a mistake, or were condemned for their actions, I always start by considering if I'd make the same mistake as them. And sometimes, like the ZZH case (cos I am a sucker for sakuras dammit lol), I find myself terrified for the backlash because that would have been me. With the recent "cleanout" of "rotten celebrities", the public seem to live off the high of having the power of "justice" when in actuality, they have none. Their government provides them the illusion of such autonomy. The earlier they realise this, the better. But it isn't going to happen any time soon...

    Hilarous and entertaining reaction.
Thanks for the insight as well. The word "redeemable" is indeed very true. No one is irredeemable; no one is righteous, no one is too evil - circumstances play role in shaping people. And people can be lead to the right path when they are guided by "the light".
So sad that nature treat people indifferently. No one can actually judge people; only can one understand when they are in the other's shoes.

They didn't add the last episode after an mv because of money issues, but because it would count as an mv that way, not as a proper episode. BL series aren't allowed to have happy endings (only open endings or sad endings) so they got around censorship that way. They did have money issues and had to compress the series, but that was not the reason ep 37 eas so different.

Just binge watched your reactions to WoH in like two days and while I am a bit late I thought I'd just ramble a bit, mainly because your explanation on how you rate this series vs what the Untamed means to you etc. was interesting. Because for me that fundamentally life changing show was Hannibal (I have yet to see your reactions but I'll do that later), that series held me so tight on its grip it's not even funny. And well...I don't see that changing any time soon, considering it's been like this since Hannibal first started airing in 2013...
But yeah, I think I get what you mean because if I were to give objective (or as close as humans can get to be) I'd probably give Hannibal like 8,5 or 9, it's not perfect, but subjectively hah I don't think I could grate it as I'm far too emotionally attached to it and everything it represents. The Untamed hmm objectively I'd give 7 (great amazing story as well as characters, but those just bad special effects and even more the fight scenes and at times awkward camera work/story flow) but subjectively it would be around 9 (if it had more of my loves Xichen and A-Yao I might just change it to 10, heh).
Word of honor is interesting case on the other hand...if it had had the original length and didn't have to rush with the last 5-7 episodes, I honestly think I'd give it 10 even objectively speaking, because basically everything was masterfully done from costumes to sets to character arcs to music to the balance of humor and tragedy and especially the portrayal of two very damaged individuals finding home and acceptance in each others (it reminds me too much of Hannibal and Will in that regard for me not to be just completely weak for it). But well if I look at the show as it is without considering other factors like budget getting cut down etc. I'd probably give it 8,5 as well. Hah subjectively it would still be around 9,5 for me.
Also this reminds me of Taiwanese series History 3 Trapped which I more or less rate around 9,5 to 10 be it subjectively but objectively to probably 8. Though when it comes to plot, premise and acting, it is really up there with the great queër series (cop and gang leader reluctantly start to work together and so on...)
Yeah I definitely have a type for damaged people finding acceptance and love in another as well as learning to accept and love themselves in the process as well. In Will's words: "I have never known myself as well as I did when I was with him." (And well, whether they be truly irredeemable and just making a shared home in hell or going through painful yet satisfying redemption arc, I'm not picky)
    I suspect it's the qüeer in me¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anygaysss this was a fun albeit a bit tear filled journey (as its the nature of Word of Honor), thanks for that^^

Late to the thread, but I think the reason WKX didn't die is because he had literally tripped over the Yin Yang book of super medicine that can cure any illness, so ZZ could use that to save him. At least I assume ZZ was smart enough to figure that out while WKX was passing out. I also love this story of two villains, essentially, who find their way to redemption by loving each other. I love this series so much.

Couple more thoughts (more spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the whole thing, but if they're really watching this video without seeing the earlier ones or having watched the series, wth, they deserve spoilers):
I also just absolutely love Wen Ke Xing. It's been a long time since I've seen such a deep, nuanced, immersive character that I just wanted to see do everything - war, love, laundry, anything. That is some amazing writing. And Gong Jun - holy crap, what a performance. The voice actor was very good, but it's really bothering me that I can't see the whole role in GJ's own voice because I know he took a lot of scenes to amazing places.
WoH is also maybe the least cliched villain-redemption story I've ever seen. The motivations were so human, so believable, so gut-wrenching, for just about every character. Zhao Jing is the only character who doesn't come off as fully human, because he has to be all the evil to all the people, but even he plays an all-too-realistic gaslighting emotional abuser to Scorpion. And that scene in the memorial-turned-trophy room when he got drunk and got caught by Scorpion - the actor was fabulous in that, a chilling psycho and a pathetic loser at the same time.
I also really loved how WoH juxtaposed the good, healthy relationships based on love, trust, and acceptance against the bad, toxic relationships based on dependence and exploitation. Even when the details of those stories were ultra theatrical, like Tragicomic Ghost's jilted at the altar story, the relationship dynamics were realistic.
Overall, one of my favorite series of any kind, ever. Love it.
Also, I just discovered your channel and will need to pick through all your stuff, because your reactions are everything. You were just killing me, lol.

See this I why I think our Wen boi survived. (Apart from the fact it was said that death wasnt always gonna happen) When he was talking to Madam Luo in Ghost Valley he said something about 'driving out' the person or spirit that was within them so they could be in the human world. Does our boy have that spirit within him so when he was the furnace it burnt up that soul instead of his?
Or was it that our Immortal Boo transferred his immortality to ya boi as he was done with decaying but never dying? Bc it was said in the show sometimes it would just severely injure you internally and that it was possible to live. Armed with the immortality it might have saved him. Or balanced it at least so that he wasnt immortal but he could at least be alive.

Don’t know how canonical it is but I was told that in the book they both fight each other to decide who tops.
-Feeling sorry for the people living by that mountain. 😂

    • @nero4491
      @nero4491 2 роки тому

Yes it's canon. They're both wanna be tops, so neither wants to be the shou. The only time it happens, WKX has to play sad and even cry, so that ZZS takes pity and gives in for that one time. Then they decide to fight it out in order to see who gets to top. (There's just that mention in one of the extras, and that's it. No actual scene, LOL.)
But in the drama they were sneakier by having them do dual cultivation (with WKX saving ZZS) then implying with the ongoing fight they were still doing it, all those years later. IMHO this one series getting all the buzz made the censors decide not to allow any more BL in the near future, because they were SO fooled with this one, LOL.
Which is so sad, because Immortality was SO close to being completed, then Winner is King (based on Sha Po Lang if I'm not mixing them up) was in the works, even Seizing Dreams had a cast and a filming schedule... And there was even talk of Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, my other BIG obsession from MXTX's novels. So many good stories...
But I still have hope - I mean, they massacred Advance Bravely but it still aired, cut off completely Addicted Heroin but just a few years later we got TU and WoH and The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty and who knows what may be released yet. (Keeping fingers crossed for Immortality, Chu WanNing is what I most want to see, even if the story is kind of gory...)
(Edited because English is hard on 2 hrs of sleep... :( )

      Holy Sh*t 🤣, this is the best.❤️
-Yeah it’s a shame really, for all the potential dramas these stories could had. I must admit the sound of a SVSSS drama would be EPIC. (Shen Qingqiu screaming on the inside while the actor is looking all calm and collected) I’m not upset about the donghua since at least we have some adaptation of the novel. Season 2 hopefully is going to come out so we have something to look forward to
All in all, I’m grateful to see these stories become adapted given the constraints against them. I’m currently watching Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty and can’t wait for Guardian’s reaction🥰. However seeing as some are beginning to crack down on the censorship all we can really do is wait and see for the future of all these dramas.
Hopefully you’ll get a better nights rest tonight, not sleeping can make you sick really quickly. I hope your not suffering with insomnia, my best wishes if you are.
I’m not gonna be a hypocrite though given I’ve only slept for 4h last night.

@@isobelstockton4949 SVSSS is the best! SQQ's inner voice - and the System's :D - are just the most hilarious things ever :) If they made it, they would also change a lot, given the censorship on demons and the like, but most of it would get a pass, IMHO. The donghua is also very good (even in 3D CG and not regular animation) and SQQ still looks pretty, I can understand LBH's fixation LOL. I'll just keep hoping for a drama.
How do you find The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty? It's one of my favourite dramas, Darren Chen is cute as a button :D (and even with the extra characters and slightly changed plotlines, the gist of the tale comes through.) Also, I just want to sing Wang Zhi's praises all the time. He definitely steals every scene he's in :D
Re: my insomnia... Sadly at this time it's already chronic. I have to set schedules and try hard to keep them, and if anything disrupts them, then the sleep is gone for the day. More time for dramas, oh well :D

    • @isobelstockton4949
      @isobelstockton4949 2 роки тому

🥰Ha, no matter what SQQ is always looking pretty in whatever adaptation he is in. Low key jealous- the introverted millennial got a full glow up and makeover technically for free.
As for the Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, 💕I can see why it’s your favourite, honestly I don’t know how I went for so long without watching it. The main paring.... just... ❤️😭. Yep they’re so adorable it’s painful.
      - I know you’ve probably heard this tons before but I’m wishing you well with your insomnia. In many cases it does go away eventually (even if it takes a while), living life without a good rest is awful but whether it’s physical and/or emotional problems, I’m sure you can get through it.
Anyway it’s nice to have talked about this. It’s always a pleasure to talk to others who enjoy similar things!

Word of Honor felt much better then untamed. to me it take the first place while untamed wasn't bad but the characters felt less good. I'm also a writer, even in plot and character wise WOF was much better then the untamed. there was so much bs in the untamed if we talking about the plot, and many plot holes and things that didn't make any sanse. and in a way Wei ying and Lan Zhan didn't change much, they change but not much
