White curly tail grub. 6 white jig pre-rigged 1/8oz for $1.98 at Walmart. Its my go-to lure almost every new body of water I fish. Walleye, crappie, smallmouth, white bass. Rivers, dragging it down drop offs, drifting suspended fish, rocks. Dont care if I snag and lose all 6 on rocks that day either! And when the tails get bit off I save the white jig head for minnows finicky walleye.
This is one of my main go-tos for small mouth bass in Atlantic Canada. The Berkley pumpkinseed/orange and firetiger with a charteuse round jighead are fantastic.
A white grub with the end of the tail dipped in chartreuse colored, garlic scented dye is my go to lure in creeks and streams during spring through fall. It's universal for anything.
Mr. Twister taught me how to catch fish without bait, and I rarely, if ever, use bait anymore. These days, my go-to brand is Berkly, but probably any brand is as good as the next.
Me like to use Kalin's grubs because their tails are thinner and have more action at a slower retrieve. Them mufckas catch alot of fish the slower you can fish it.
Steve you're absolutely right. It seems like grubs are the only thing I can catch with. And damn near everything hits on them. Pretty effective in my opinion.
I picked up Mr.Twister as a mainstay in the 70s when they first appeared in the local stores. I only ever buy white or yellow and use a ballhead jig. Fishing in the Mississippi you never know what you'll catch. Walleye, sauger, white bass, yellow bass, largemouth, smallmouth, catfish all would bite the twister tail jigs consistantly.
I have been tossing yamamotos grubs for decades (#157) smoke /purple flake but it’s has been discontinued . You’re right tho most guys just forgot about this gem . 👍🏻
Here in the pnw all our water is muddy and turbulated all winter. A lot of our big lakes are reservoirs and the stocked pond are pretty much 3 inches on visibility all winter... these things still get the job done...
Another great video Steve! I have caught so many bass as a kid using it as a trailer on a white spinnerbait! A smaller one on the old SOB (Small Oki Bug) and for sure on a beetle spin, after the original grub wore out! I’ve had a lot of luck also with the smoke color also, which is transparent.
I used to fish a grub quite often Steve. It gave way to small swimbaits for me. The last couple of years I have gotten them back out and they have paid off in certain situations. Thanks for sharing your retrieve. I think I work it too much.
Thanks for the video. It showed up on my feed so I gave it a look. Im from the south and do both fresh and salt water fishing. What I use this for is flounder fishing in the gulf. I bump jig at different depths, either in the surf or on the flats. Its deadly! Its my go too for flounder. Never tried it for fresh water, ill give it a go.
Hey Steve! Great video and totally agree that swim grubs are awesome baits especially in cold water. I used them all the time years ago, but like many anglers found myself leaning towards the soft swim bait. Last year brought the twister type tail back into my rotation and have been scratching my head as to why I ever put them away!!!! They work on all species from ‘gills to muskie! Couple years back, caught most of my muskie on 8” Kalin Octombo swim grubs!! Way underrated bass bait for largemouth and smallies!!! Thanks for your awesome videos!!!
@moseskongi4746 yes, bass and walleye. But I do use crankbaits , top water and I try a finesse rig occasionally. I've gone out for an hour, caught Smallmouth, Walleye, Northern, and played with a roughly 36" Musky, all on the same 1/4 oz black head/ yellow tail, until the Musky had enough and cut the line. Yes, you need to retie frequently. Luck!
@@tiredofit1429 Do you catch many fishes on a black jighead and yellow curly tail combo? Looks like a wild ass combination. Maybe fish attack it because they never seen it before. Love the Yamamoto double tail. Dark green and black flakes of the have them 4 inch. 1/8 th oz crappie jig head , black. The hula grubs are great to give your buddy who’s to cheap to buy them, I have never caught a fish on them. Steady retrieve like you said. I troll these in Georgia for crappie too, it's one of the best universal baits on the market. This is my 4th year winter bass fishing, and I've never thought to try this technique, thanks for the video, I'll be giving it a try this weekend on some suspended fish
I appreciate all the tips, Steve! Wisconsin has gotten to almost freezing temps, and I unfortunately think its time for me to put the rod down. But I’ll make sure to implement all the great things I’ve learned from this channel in the spring!
It got so hot today in north Florida I left my bow at home this morning and went bass fishing for the first time since hunting season started. We need a couple more good cold fronts to get the deer up and moving during the day.
Down here in Orlando Fla. Dealing with a lot of grass and hydrilla's . I will give it a shot ! My garage is like a Tackle Warehouse. I have those . Thanks My G
Hey, Steve, great to see ya. Pray you and your family are well and have a Happy Thanksgiving! Used to use a grub when I was growing up fishing in Guntersville. Worked great
Yes, the single-tail grab can be highly productive. The most productive colors for me in my area were the watermelon or June bug color with the bright chartreuse tail, as it accounted for my catching many bass that ignored most other lures and/or presentations !😊
Grubs are fish catching classics! By themselves they're a simple to use technique that any angler can utilize. But they also make great jig and spinnerbait trailers as well. Like you said, I really like single tail grubs in cold, clear water. Unfortunately, there are plenty of older anglers on my local fisheries, and they all like grubs, lol.
I use the Kalins Lunker Grub curly tails here in WI for bass, pike, walleyes. Missed a huge muskie with it as well. Use the 5" but you have to get the color right.
My favorite lure for summer pike (no bass in my area), weighted wide gap or worm hook (1/8th oz) to make it weedless and just slowly dragging it over and under lilly pads, give it a little twitch every now and then.
Croatia. There were attempts to transfer bass, and some survived but they are very, very far and few inbetween. River and lake beds simply aren't the right kind (mostly sand in super fast rivers and super soft mud in lakes) for bass to make beds, combined with the fact that bass would smash a greasy brick and people overfishing them for bait and cat food... they simply never had a chance to survive. Shame since they eat bullheads which are decimating other fish species by eating their eggs. Some waters do hold bass but they are usually private lakes or catch and release only, all under surveillance and permits to fish there can cost tens of euros.
Great videos, sir, all of them. I really enjoy the short and to the point videos. Cover the matter thoroughly and we're done. I have very little interest in a long drawn out "how to"
I fish this almost exclusively. I have it set up on my ultra-light which is my favorite setup. I try to fish other lures, but these get so many bites if I can't get something right away I switch back to this.
I remember when I was 13 or 14 and taking my dads boat and tying up to spots. I use to use a white with red dot grub that a tackle place had in buckets for like 1 or 2 cent a piece. I use to smoke the bass with that bait.
I still have a dedicate bag holder for Old Cabelas Elaztek type grubs. You can fish one all day. It's prob why they discontinued them. I never put the two together but I usually break them out for samllies and perch when the bite is off. Yep, cooler water may be the reason.
Will try this, but I absolutely slay in cold weather with these, on a slow stop and go retrieve. Why do I think its better? They hit it on the stop, over and over. So the stop seems pretty important.
I still use a single tail grub, such an underrated bait, it's nice if your just fishing to catch fish I feel like most species where I'm from will bite a grub
I have caught a lot of fish with grubs. I have noticed that when a grub bite shuts down, I can often pick up a few more fish by swapping that white grub with a black or purple grub.
White grub with some bait fish sent kills it in the saltwater too. Caught many a halibut with just a round head jig and white grub. Still use 6 inch grubs for rockfish and bigger halibut out of the bay.
Definitely a big fan of curly tail grubs and jigs. We've caught bass, walleye, crappie, bluegill other panfish, trout and salmon with them. For the challenge of only 1 lure to catch fish for survival its a toss up between jigs and grubs or a handful of Beetle Spins. Call me old school and you're right. I use some fad baits but when they're not working grubs will.
Do you ever have a line twist problem fishing a twist tail? I had issues this year with line twist. Last year I didn’t have line twist issues. I rig the bait down the seam straight as possible.
I get made fun of every time I pull out the grub arsenal but they’ve never failed me. Probably caught more fish on grubs than any other lure or bait I’ve thrown in my life. Especially fishing bass heavy ponds with about a 1 to 2 inch grub, I’ve yanked anywhere from 3-6 medium bass in a row on grubs. My next favorite is plain gold spoons
A curly tail grub like that is a killer in the saltwater too. In fact they're too good at times because the "tail biters" hit them too much and destroy them. Pufferfish, croakers, spots, pinfish, lizardfish, small flounder, and a whole bunch more species of small fish hit them a lot. But right now the tail biters are mostly gone and grubs are catching trout and redfish. They're awesome for flounder too but they're mostly offshore now. The Berkley Gulp Swimming Mullet in 3, 4 or 5" is a curly tail on a minnow shaped body. I prefer to use them over natural baits, even live bait. The tail biters do destroy them and they're expensive but it's hard to beat them. Gulp shrimp are good too but those swimming mullet are my favorites. I don't know if they do a freshwater version of them but they should. I don't know what is in Gulp but that stinky juice makes a massive difference over unscented baits and even other baits I put scent on. When tail biters are just too brutal I switch to Z Man or Salt Strong soft plastics because they're tougher, especially Z Man. That stuff is unreal for the durability.
@SteveRogersOutdoors I'll be here in Virginia for at least a couple months. If you want to fish in the Chesapeake Bay I'd be happy to show you around. But I'll probably be moving to Central America in March or around then. I'm trying to move back to paradise because I miss living down there. Now my family wants to go so I have an opportunity. But once I'm there you're welcome to come fish for big stuff in the saltwater with me. We're looking for a place with rooms we can rent out, close enough to the water to fish and near some other attractions. Hopefully on the Pacific side. Pacific snook and roosterfish and huge snapper are a lot of fun.
For me casting if a point for cod slash sea bass. Sometimes limiting out with 8 cast's 8 keeper's. sometimes it doesn't even make it to the bottom. Yup white is the colour.
The white single tail grub is the go to on the rivers over here...especially for bass/walleye in the fall... such an simple and effective old school lure..
I sort of feel the grub trend coming back, a bit through fat twin-tail creatures / craws / frogs and also eel imitations. Talking about Northern pike in Scandinavia here.

Something I fished for many years with tons of confidence. Guess I got caught up in newest techniques. Will be adding grubs back too my arsenal.

Used with a roadrunner, it's perfect . Lite tackle makes it all perfect
Believe it or not but in dark muddy water, solid black can be very effective.

I like the 8inch
The white single tail grub is the go to on the rivers over here...especially for bass/walleye in the fall... such an simple and effective old school lure..
SHHHHHH!!!
oh well, the secret is out folks! 😊
I sort of feel the grub trend coming back, a bit through fat twin-tail creatures / craws / frogs and also eel imitations. Talking about Northern pike in Scandinavia here.
Grubs catch em all. I like the pearl mr twisters the most but they all catch fish. But I ESPECIALLY use grubs for walleye.
They really are a great choice for walleye!
