- In the urban tapestry of North London lies the Broadwater Farm Estate, a place often painted with a brush of notoriety and danger.
This documentary peels back the layers of this complex community, exploring the stories that have shaped its reputation as one of London's most challenging housing estates.
Built in the 1960s and 1970s as a vision of modern living, Broadwater Farm rapidly became a symbol of urban decay and social strife.
From the infamous 1985 riots that brought it into the national spotlight, to the ongoing struggles with crime and poverty, the estate's narrative is fraught with challenges.
However, beneath the headlines lies a deeper story of resilience, community spirit, and transformation. Through the voices of residents, community leaders, and historians, we will explore the multifaceted reality of life on Broadwater Farm.
How has this estate, once a symbol of post-war optimism, come to embody some of the most pressing urban issues of our times?
Join us as we journey into the heart of Broadwater Farm, uncovering the stories of hardship, hope, and the unyielding spirit of a community often misunderstood and misrepresented.

Worked as a community nurse on Broadwater Farm in the wake of the riots. Tangmere was the hub of community cohesion, the sense of community was heartening. The Gifford Report gave a good insight into what really happened ❤

I was bought up with Jamaican, french, Thai, Turkish, Hong Kong nationalities and as my dear mum said I'm not colour conscious, I'm class conscious and we grew up very poor and some of the best, least selfish are poor, work hard and traditionally were bought up on the Bible but there's some great people all over the world whether in Pakistan, Ireland, Portugal or wherever. It's about consciousness, truth, respect and learning.
I like this comment and can relate to it a lot!!! Im a British born Jamaican and grew up in Birmingham inner city winson green/cape hill area which is a very poor area of Britain,I grew up around Irish peoples Bangladeshi’s Indians pakistani’s Chinese Czech’s Albanians and Vietnamese. One thing we all had in common was our Grandparents/parents came here poor as fuck in hope of a better life for us and worked harder than we can ever imagine!!! People can’t believe it when I say where I grew up i didn’t witness racism first hand I only heard stories and seen stories in the media !! We grew up happy and more culturally diverse, this has blessed me as an adult!!! But then It wasn’t till a late teenager when I lived in a different part of the country where there was little ethnic diversity I really started to see how little the ethnic majority see of non white peoples especially us black peoples!!

You see these estates it ts a deliberate act of the racist government. They put all ethnic back ground people to gether who come from different cultures and back grounds who have one thing in common poverty and porishment. Unemployed or hard working low pay income decent people. Of all works of life. We are deliberate put in this situation as PAWNS to be used and abused by the government. They never tell you they deliberated brought over the immigrants to clean up the mess of the 2 world war plus the white people didn't want to do the low paid rubbish jobs. They don't tell you they went over to the Caribbean to beg for them to come over and telling them they get good accommodation and jobs which was a blatant lie. I was born in the uk in the 60s and lived with rats infestation and poverty. And lived with 4 other family sharing the yard. So th English white people where never told the truth. The amount of extortion they took from the Caribbean plus colonialism and slavery we still don't have a better deal as the universal evil system called racism which is the devil s hand work still remains on tacked entrenched into each and ever corner of the European and western society.. the joke is still on them as we have been here in the uk from the first Europeans that was of blacklist a mere 5000 years ago and we have always been on England from centuries and centuries ago. The white people have been brainwashed from their own people to believe that we onky came her in the 50s and 60s . Real education is in the universities not school.and in the museums.
I bet when they developed the Broadwater they will now put white wealthy people as they always do ethnic cleansing or gentrification. England is racist and prejudice and they like it likat to control people's mind and keep them ignorant
The little Boy JJ went on to be one of the best rappers to come from the UK.

Three adults and three youths were charged with the murder; the adults, Winston Silcott, Engin Raghip and Mark Braithwaite (the "Tottenham Three"), were convicted in 1987. A widely supported campaign arose to overturn the convictions, which were quashed in 1991 when scientific testing cast doubt on the authenticity of detectives' notes of an interview in which Silcott appeared to incriminate himself.[7] Two detectives were charged in 1992 with perverting the course of justice and were acquitted in 1994.[8]
Police re-opened the murder inquiry in 1992 and again in 2003. Ten men were arrested in 2010 on suspicion of murder, and in 2013 one of them, Nicholas Jacobs, became the seventh person to be charged with Blakelock's murder, based largely on evidence gathered during the 1992 inquiry. He was found not guilty in April 2014.

Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

My mate got a job as a fireman at Tottenham Station in 2001, if they got a call to Broadwater farm they had to have police back up because, someone would start a bin fire, when they turned up they couldn't get out the fire engine coz people would throw bricks, stone washing machines on to the fire engine.

The politics and police in Jamaica are worse than here especially with the poor. I'm no fan of UK ruling classes and the system is biassed for them. We don't pay tax fairly.

This bullshit happened 40 years ago, why we talking about it now? They turned that place into a little village with its own school and health centre. The only drama there now is when the W4 bus gets delayed as usual. 😂
Because its part of history and i. Talkinh about it from the people that lived there it gave an understanding of the issues in society at that time
