I agree with some of these but most are "mature" in a more stereotypical sense (violent and moody as you put it at one point) which is more like pubescent really. Shadowrun and Flashback apply to an extent, world and NPC interaction is more advanced in the latter especially and it plays out kinda like a detective story although there isn't much depth to any one character. Another World and SM I guess you could say are emotionally nuanced and more subtle or complex at times in what they're trying to convey compared to the average 16-bit action game, despite not having much or any dialogue. I think the most mature overall are Mother 2/Earthbound, FF6 and Chrono Trigger, in some ways Terranigma, despite most of them looking more cutesy or cartoony. I've also heard good things about Ihatovo Monogatari but haven't really played it yet.

I had Out of this World for the SNES. It took me years to beat it
