I dropped the three body problem because of the naming issue. First ive heard of a similar experience, ill give it another go. I really enjoyed Hyperion by Dan Simmons if you can stomach that he purposely includes like every sci-fi genre as a sub story in it, including things like noir which I strongly dislike.
