Just found this after hearing of the passing of Gianluca Vialli. I remembered it being such an amazing performance from him in the 2nd half. I was gutted as a Liverpool fan at the time but the respect was there. Rest in Peace, Luca.
Same here really watching that amazing match on a Sunday if I remember just very sad yesterday to. Hear I’m gonna raise a glass to a lovely person and a wonderful footballer Godbless
Big up 2 you sir.. Liverpool tore us to shreds in the 1st half. Sparky mark hughes changed the game. Some zola magic, and viallis movement for his goals was world class.
The greatest. Commentated on the game in a way the fans could appreciate. Now we have muppets like Peter Drury who make the whole thing about themselves.
I went to this match and was gutted when Liverpool got knocked out. I will always remember the Chelsea chant "2 nil down, 4 2 up, knocked the scousers out the cup". RIP Vialli. 58 is no age. ❤
This match is one of my all time favourites. It was certainly one of the most exciting to watch. The first half Liverpool should have been out of sight, say 5-1 up, but that second half was all Chelsea. They were so doninant over Liverpool that once we equalised I knew then we were going to win and after the match, win the FA Cup. It seemed like it was destined as was Chelsea winning the Champions League in 2012 after beating Napoli when 3-1 down in the first leg.
They should have been. They roasted Chelsea in the first 45 minutes but they didn’t take all of their chances and against an attacking lineup including Hughes, Zola and Vialli their profligacy didn’t go unpunished. Seldom has the old cliche, it was a game of two half’s, been more accurate.
This is the match that started it all for me as a Chelsea fan! Then the rest of the cup run and the European Cup run the next season 100% cemented it for me!
Mark Hughes loved to score against Liverpool! He just loved the big occasion and he scored in a few different finals over the years; in the FA Cup Final in 1990 he scored two in the first game, he scored two in the 1991 Cup Winners Cup Final, one in a losing cause in the 1994 League Cup Final and he scored United’s third goal in the 1994 FA Cup Final. For all Mark won with United he was a boyhood blue, so to win three different cup competitions with Chelsea was a dream come true for him.
@@AlexanderBuck1973 it was good business from Chelsea to pick him up as an impact player in 1995 at 31, for a bargain price of £1.5 million. Chelsea were ambitious and at the beginning of their rise and rise period. Hughes was an excellent, experienced, older pro who was able to show the younger lads how to go about their trade. It was no surprise that they started winning things soon after, especially when able players such as Flo and Poyet also joined up.
Watched this as a 13 year old at a house party. By half time we were all down and out. All the kids went outside and had a kick about in the street and I remember feeling totally dejected. went back inside, saw Hughes score and the whole mood changed. Will always be my favourite Chelsea game ever.
Just rewatching this with the sad news of Vialli's passing. I was 13 when I watched it live and it's still one of the greatest games I've seen. RIP Gianluca :-(
I remember watching this match, Hughes was substituted one, and completely changed the game. He roughed up the Liverpool defence, they cowered and wilted
Remember it well, thinking at half time no way Chelsea can do anything against the mighty bin dippers. Years before Abramovich and his money took them to another level, Chelsea were getting their act together nicely back then. Will never forget the photo of scousers crying in disbelief, that was plastered everywhere.
yes people think Chelsea was only good when Abramovich take over, i remember this game i recorded Jonathan pierce on radio and played it every day going to work this match highlights its also the team that go on to win the UEFA Cup Winners Cup Final that same season and super cup the next year , this game was given the headline they thought it was all over, at the time.
My favourite ever win against the lice. The noise at that 4th goal could be heard on Putney Common. I'll never forget us chanting at Anfield, "You were crying at the Bridge."
Never mind the final win against Middlesbrough, the semi-final win against Wimbledon at Highbury or scraping through in the quarter final replay at home to Leicester City, I truly believe that this is where we won the 1997 FA Cup. Not only that, it was also the night that Gianluca Vialli wrote his name into Chelsea legend. RIP, Luca. Gone way too soon.
This is one of my favourite games of all times. People ask me what’s my favourite game of all time and when I don’t say the Champions league In Munich people think I’m bizzare. But the Champions league tie against Arsenal Away is my all time favourite. All the losses we took against them meant nothing with that win. Up The Blues
I was with my gooner mate when we knocked them out of the CPL in their back yard. It really signalled a change of dominance over them for well over a decade. I loved the CPL win but to see the wind knocked out of Arsenal's sails was priceless. It was an incredible game to witness. Especially after all our beatings from the arse.
This game will never ever be forgotten. 2 down and on the receiving end of a possible demolishing. Then Hughes, Zola and double from our late, great No.9 turned the game on its head. We deserved this hands down.
The greatest game I ever saw! Sparky was raring to go as he was always up for playing against scousers. Vialli showed his brilliance, despite Ruud not playing him regularly........all because Vialli shirts outsold Gullit shirts in the clubshop! That's true! Get well soon Luca!
Amazing game. Wanted Liverpool to win but swapped sides as kept they were playing to hold the 2-0 lead. Great substitutions and you just felt that it could happen.
First game I ever remember watching (vaguely) remember my dad sick at half time and scenes when zola got equaliser, crazy when we got the 3rd and 4th. Such a nostalgic and perfect cup run considering no trophies since 1970. Now i feel like an old man referencing this like i thought about my dad talking about 1970, but beating Leeds in a replay is one thing but the way we won was unreal, didn't let them bully us then won it. No wonder there's so much hate.
McManaman was a strange player. He could smash a ball with real power from distance yet hit the ball with such little power inside the box, almost like he's wearing slippers. The game hinged on McManaman missing that sitter to shoot or pass to Fowler but the second half from Chelsea was inspirational

@@zaidahmed9527 And me, loved Vialli, feel so flat but watching this has cheered me up
remember this game as a 10yo kid too.. couldn't believe we threw it away.. Rip Vialli

I remember watching this Live on tv like it was yesterday.
Me too
I was in the now Matthew Harding Stand watching this. The noise was unbelievable in the second half. This game will live with me forever

One of my favourite players for Chelsea. He became a bit of a super sub. Always made an impact and a very clever footballer.

I watched this game in a pub with some mates, one of them a Liverpool fan. What a comeback that was, fantastic game!
Still my favourite Chelsea game off all time
As a Liverpool fan this was one of the most depressing defeats I’ve ever seen. I remember being absolutely gutted by this one.

At 3:50. Mark Wright looks like he didn't know what hit him. RIP Luca...
Luca Vialli, you champion.
We did it to them in 1997 and our (Chelsea) under 18s did it on Saturday 29/1/2022; 4-3victory from 3-0 down.
Cmonnnn you Blues 💙

i was there with my mates half time we thought we were gone how wrong were we we were singing all the way home great game
Chelsea the Great!
We should have been 6 down, and then could have scored 6 in the 2nd half. Crazy game.

Liverpool a shambles. McManamam and Fowler a pair of wasters
