  • How do we measure greatness? The Cerwin Vega Stroker has always been my dream sub woofer. I've been wanting some since the mid 90s and now I have some of my own and get to build them myself.
    Let's take a look at the history of the Stroker and what makes it so special.
    Cerwin Vega has a new Stroker

    My first experience was when I was a young adult in the 90s at a pawn shop an saw a guy go crazy in a subtle way when he saw a Stroker 12" and a Xtant amp that was priced crazy low. Needless to say he bought both of them. He told me they don't know what they have. Now this was back before internet verification.

      Justin McGinley same here in 96 had 2 18" strokers in a suburban. box had 4 6inch ports. Ran subs with a Lanzar 1000 amp on each. 2 dcell batteries and 2 ppi amps for mids and highs which were all Polk audio. At the time it was called dual post alternator which held 2 Marine dcell batteries and 4 capacitors. The Lanzar amps use to get sooo fucking hot but would never cut off. Them amps were fucking gladiators 1000watts of pure power. Then I learned about the 1400 watt ppi's that would run all day without getting warm and switched out Lanzars for those..... All in all GREATEST SPEAKERS EVER LIVED. I used to have my windows up and ppl would be holding their ears in other cars while their windows were up. My head unit was Alpine cva1000 first flip out monitor with the Alpine gra320 detachable face eq

    In 1995 or 1996, I had tried a Stroker 12 at the car audio store and loved it, so I bought a Stroker 15 and in my 1989 Grand Prix, I managed to hit a 143.3dB. A couple of years later, I bought a Stroker 18D4. I had this one Stroker 18D4 in my Grand Prix for a year or so, then in a 1989 Honda CRX and powered it with an Earthquake 200DHC (2000wrms). That speaker could handle it all day long. My best score was 148.3dB. I got first for Amateur 1-2subs class (I even beat cars with 3 and 4 subs). When I turned the bass down, it also sounded really good, and I got first for Amateur sound quality. For an 18" speaker, it could be powerful, and in the right box, it can still be very tight for punchy bass.
    I still have the sub but use it as my home theater sub. It sounds amazing. This setup looks really good!
    Nice history on the Stroker subs!

I will be watching your future videos cause I have the same dream to buy old Strokers and refurb them. Show these youngnes nowadays what quality American made badass was all about. If you can ever get your hands on a Phoenix Gold Cyclone I think that would be an interesting video as well.

    I had a 12" cerwin vega stroker and thought it was loud until i heard a ddaudio 9500. I love it's unique look but modern subs outperform them with ease.

    • @carlosoliveira-rc2xt
      @carlosoliveira-rc2xt 5 років тому

      In some ways yes but in the early days of car audio, those drivers could be taken out of your car and used as home subs because they had a low fs. Most drivers today have a highish fs and designed strictly for loudness at 40Hz and above. I understand about cabin gain, but I find most modern subs amusical. I prefer old school paper subs with a low fs and tuned low as well.

    • @craigreustle2192
      @craigreustle2192 5 років тому

      @@carlosoliveira-rc2xt I am actually currently using my dd9515 in my home. It took a little bit of work to give in the power it can handle but i think it sounds decent. I built the enclosure exactly to spec as shown on ddaudio's site for 32hz.

    • @carlosoliveira-rc2xt
      @carlosoliveira-rc2xt 5 років тому

      @@craigreustle2192 Today alot of movies have response to 20Hz and below. I'm using a couple of 24" subs in my main system and a 21" in a secondary system.
      I think you may enjoy a good sub that does below 20Hz well. The 9500 has an fs of 37Hz so it may crack plaster at 40Hz but it probably puts out nothing below 30Hz.
      The subs I use are also very efficient so the power needs are reasonable.
      Cheers!

    Hey showtimeSPL, Wow I thought I was the last of a forgotten generation who really liked oldschool CV. I myself have been a huge CV fan mainly old-school since the early 1990s. I also had dual vc XL12s when I was 13-14 in the early 1991-2. I had my car stereo setup in my room before I had a car and was too young to drive lol. What really got my attention was when you started talking about the original earthquake subs well I have a pair of the old theater 18 inch Strokers 100% original. They look aged but still work perfect and will be using them in my theater once I get my house built. I also found 2 still new in plastic 12 inch strokers in the original boxes that will also be in the theater. I still need to build the enclosures for them and when I do I post them up on my channel during the build so you can see them. Great video!

    The classic Stroker is the best sub woofer ever. I remember seeing them for the first time at a show in Sacramento in a guy's blazer. I think he had 4x 12's or 15's it was insane. I've always loved Cerwin Vega's, and they were actually my first speakers too. Not the Strokers but some AT 12's. I have some Re30 12's in my garage on an old Harmon Kardon receiver, and I love them!

    After being away from car audio for the last twenty years I pulled out my never been used Stroker 12DVC with the giddiness a teen to pair with my Audio Frog GB front stage. The wife said she thought I had grown out of car audio...told her I'm back!

      Hey thanks Brantley. I was always such a huge fan of the work you guys did. I do know there was some confusion on who was the first over 160 because of how close it was in time, and lack of internet. Some of the publications had it wrong and I hope you are correctly accredited in the history books.

    Great video with a legendary sub! pretty cool of your mom to let you run a system in her vehicle, that was probably a pretty good score do you remember where you placed in that competition?

    • @SparkedEd
      @SparkedEd  6 років тому

      I wasn't sure on what place. It was an IASCA event in 95 so no head to head or clear score keeping beyond the 1,2,3 people. It was also back when we had 30 people in 1 class so I imagine I was close to the bottom. I didn't get a trophy until I was 17.

    I remember someone's biuld killing all competitions it was a small square vw..rabbit... the hole car was full of concrete and had 5 strokers in this big concrete car they had to bolt the door shut.. I wasn't even driving yet. Listing over these magazines

    The home audio red surround Cerwin Vegas (are they all XL models?), are the greatest subwoofer of all time if we are talking about exposure. Those subs were set dressing in almost every urban sitcom and movie (possibly other genres, too), of the 90's. If you watch anything from that period, you're likely to see those bright red surrounds in a couple boxes in the background. I had four XL12's back in the day, so I'm likely more inclined to notice, but they are there.

    Short answer… YES. Unfortunately 90% of people had no idea how much the enclosure mattered and were constantly putting them in too small of boxes, or two in a box that could only handle one. So they ended up sounding like shit when some people heard them because user didn’t know what they were doing.

    This was a great speaker but the best subwoofer ever is TC Sound LMS Ultra 5400... I read TC sounds design the hcca for Orion. Well they dont make the lms and TC Sound isn't around anymore. The woofer that took it's place in my opinion is the RE Audio xxx
    Love the channel by the way
