    Thank you for the wonderful Ollie Reed references and stories, JT. I'm a 61 year old American who loves watching old Oliver Reed appearances on numerous chat shows. Colorful doesn't begin to describe the man. He's a one man master class in irony and pithy retorts. Oliver would put self-agrandizing actors and actresses in their place, not by being mean...but by being poetically honest. His appearances are a must see, with a few being sober and most with a touch of the drink. His appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" 26 September 1975 and subsequent shindy with America's blabbermouthed has-been actress Shelley Winters is priceless. Miss Winters a mediocre actress at best, prided herself on being a raucous, ditzy name-dropper on the American talk show circuit. Her numerous interruptions and guffaws during Mr. Reed's interview was the fodder for one of the most delicious yet humiliating, ego-smashing, settling of someone's hash ever seen on television. Even after an obviously flustered Miss Winter's chose to pour her cocktail over Mr. Reed's head, he concluded the segment not by calling her a vile name or storming off, but by simply explaining to the now uncomfortable audience why she chose to take what she thought would be the easy way out. Oliver Reed (1)...Shelley Winters a big, fat (0). Johnny Carson the master interviewer, allowed it all to happen for us to enjoy 50 years on. I look forward to reading those wonderful books that you introduced us to. Thanks again, JT.

      Thanks for the wonderful kind comment ! Yes just about wherever you go in the UK there is a pub that has a tale about 'the day 'Ollie' came in ! lol.. Where I used to live in a city called Winchester, UK there was a very posh hotel called 'The Wessex'. It was where all the dignitaries stayed as it has wonderful views of the Cathedral. In the restaurant bar there was a huge fish tank that could be seen from both sides of the wall it was built into.. so guests booking in to the hotel would be welcomed by this tropical underwater vision. My Dad stayed there once with work and was told the most remarkable tale !! lol So just but a month or so before Mr. Reed had been staying there probably on location for a film/movie. As he sat in the bar, my Dad was told, he got progressively more drunk and was obsessed with the fish in the tank.. going up to them and tapping on the glass. To his delight he saw one of the hotel staff remove a hatch above the tank and feed the fish. By now the bar was pretty much full as the hotel guests were having pre-dinner drinks all dressed up very posh ready to go into the dinning room. Suddenly Ollie was gone ! His drink was still on the bar.. so the barman (who was telling my Dad the tale) knew that Ollie couldn't be that far away.. and right he was.. because with a gigantic splash he appeared completely naked in the fish tank.. lol.. swimming around and popping his mouth like a goldfish and winking at the women who were sat in the bar with their mouths wide open ! 😂🤣 I must say that he had a very impish view of anything he considered pretentious ! ..and that restaurant bar was obviously on his list of things to 'bring back to earth with a thud' ! lol The funniest part was that when he appeared back in the bar (thankfully by now fully dressed) he got a round of applause and he took a bow swirling his right hand into the air !! 🤣🤣 My Dad nearly spat his drink laughing at the tale. I think only somebody like Oliver Reed could get away with pranks like that !! lol
      Thanks again for watching and very best wishes !

    Just watched a film with Oliver Reed called Castaway and I thought that he was pretty good in it. Actually, Amanda Donohoe was the person that I mostly concentrated on (!!!!) but I did wonder whether Reed actually was suffering from the DTs in several of the scenes in the film.

    • @JimTimber
      @JimTimber  Рік тому +2

      Amanda has a wonderful presence on screen with her hooters oot ! 🦉🦉👀 😜 ..yeah..I think Ollie was as drunk as a lord for most of that movie !! Reed was a great actore and it is a great shame that he was such a dipsomaniac because he was highly intelligent when sober !

      It's a great book ! Olly has his own autobiography ( a little harder to get a copy nowadays without spending a fortune.. .. even the softback copies lurking out there) called Reed All About Me (1979) published by W H Allen.. and the softback Coronet (1981) My suggestion would be to order it from a local library from their London archives !! Not an actor that I followed as an adult, though funny enough I saw a few of his films as a child as the AAFEES military theaters in Germany ran several of his British children's films on the Saturday morning kids' matinees back in the 1970s. I also watched The Three Musketeers in the movie theater attached to the Frankfurt military hospital when I was a patient there as a kid, otherwise I remember that he was in The Prince and the Pauper and also some film about an elephant and set in WWII.

      And the Prince and the Pauper was in my opinion the best version with Ollie !

      I was a member of my school in Berkhamsted's 'Cinema Club' ..a saturday night event that saw us back at school in the Science Lab (which had auditorium style seating) and was perfect for watching the Super 16 mm movies that they showed. I saw Hannibal Brooks there in the mid 1970's ! Happy days !! Thanks for watching my friend !!

      @@JimTimber Thanks for the links, have to say that these films haven't aged well! I well remember those 16mm film projectors and the background whirring sound that would accompany the film being shown as the reels went round, plus, of course, having to change the film reels half way through the showing. Sadly, these old time projectors are history now, just like the big overhead projectors we used in school. Yeah, they were 'happy days' for sure. 📽
