    There is none like you Sir. Period. This was a lovely lovely review. So thorough and dependable. And for my beloved 5DSR, I have been considering the 100mm macro for a long time now. Will finally grab it sometime soon:) Moreover, to share, I came here on youtube after a long time researching for a lens and this time as well there has been nobody more helpful than you. Worth saying, that the absolute brilliance of two lenses that I own has also been the case inspired by your help, the Canon 70 300 L lens, and the Tamron 35mm f1.4 lens. This time I was looking for an Ultra-wide angle or a fisheye lens actually and I hope I'll find one best for me. THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU for all your help over the years. I really am grateful.

    I have this lens now, and I like it. If there is one complain I have, it is the focus ring takes up almost the entire length of the lens. Makes it difficult to mount and unmount it to the camera. Also leaves no place to handhold the lens when shooting and makes it easy to accidentally move the focus. I would also prefer the removeable front element a.k.a. front filter so I can change it to a better one, or in case I damage it, it will be easier to replace. Thanks to your in depth review, I wouldn't have even considered this brand without it. 💫

    You should make a video that teach us about these focus features you speak of. I got the lens today and am pretty noob at photography. A lot of my photos were quite out of focus and all I know to do is walk forward and backward. If there is electronic guidance I'd love to learn how to use it on my R7.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Рік тому +1

      Two quick things: enable focus overlays (I prefer white) to show what is in focus. Use the magnify button the back to magnify the image in either the viewfinder or on the LCD so that you can see what is in focus. Between those two things manual focus becomes very simple.

    I am testing this lens and I feel that it is a great one. Sharp, colors are beautiful and easy to use. One thing disturbing me is the lack of autofocus. yes, I do not use autofocus taken off very closeups but I use it in more distanced situations and also portraits. Outside, on sunny days where the subject is far away, I feel that autofocus would be nice to have. Any comments on this? Thanks.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Yes I assumed that is what he was referring to. It was not clear. It did not make a lot of sense to me either. After thinking about it - maybe what he meant is that you can't change exposure or focus when using a fully manual lens if you are set up far away from the camera using a remote trigger. That to me is a very minor limitation.

  • @jasona2305
    @jasona2305 2 роки тому

    This is great news! I ve always been looking for a 2:1 option - so is this the one?
    Couple of remarks:
    Not gonna lie - weather sealing feels like a prerequisite for me, as all of my macro work is out there in the field (and in most cases on live, moving subjects!). Obviously I don't go out shooting in the pouring rain, but it can always happen that I get caught
    I didn't hear the word 'focus stacking' throughout this review at all :) And it is also important for me to know how it performs in that respect. You mentioned that the focus throw *outside* the macro range is fairly generous, but I am mostly interested what happens *within* the macro range e.g. 1:1 towards 2:1. Would this Laowa, on my tripod-supported A7RIII will allow me to focus stack? Obviously *skill* is an important factor here, but for comparison, I have managed to make some decent stacks with my existing 90mm Sony macro. So do you reckon I can hope to be at a similar level with the Laowa? For me, the more focus throw from my macro lens, the better, as it is easier to take those tiny increment steppings that I need
    The one you reviewed was for RF. Can we safely assume that the E version would perform identical? Coming to think about it, we have so many options for E - and they keep coming in :)
    Finally, it seems that for the EU market, we might have to wait a bit (as you ve mentioned). Only the 100mm is on sale as of this point. And also, that 100mm is just a hair shy off 700USD - so I don't think that the 90mm will be any cheaper when it eventually shows up here :/

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому +2

      There is plenty of room for precision in the macro range, so yes, if you have the skill, focus stacking should not be a problem. And yes, the E-mount version would identical.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI There are four newly patented Tamron macro lenses! One for APS-C and three FF ones. But the one that intrigues me the most is the 150mm f/2.8 macro, which could also serve me as a short tele in several scenarios, so that I won't always have to carry the bulk of the 200-600
      In my short time involvement with photography/lenses, at least for the E platform, I never considered Tamron to be quite in par either either Sony G/GM or even 3rd party lenses from Sigma, Voig or Laowa - in terms of *IQ*. In my view, Tamron tried to find a niche by offering a product which is competitive in terms of price-performance ratio. Often lacking in features and somewhat always in construction quality as well, in comparison to a GM, Sigma Art etc. If I was to match it to a closer series by a competitor, I would say Sigma Contemporary
      I don't know if you agree/disagree and what is your overall impression of Tamron, from your previous experience as a Canon shooter. I m not saying it's 'useless' by any means, but at least on E mount, it often feels as a value-for-money option, often priced a fraction of what a GM would cost, but with noticeable sacrifices in other areas
      Nevertheless, as Macro is my thing, I am not going to be judgemental in advance. I would be more than happy to see this Tamron going head on to our already established range of macro options (which are plenty now!). Not sure what the magnification for that 150mm would be, but if I was to take a guess, I would say 1:1. Or if it is going to be an APO (has Tamron ever made an APO lens?)
      Looking forward when it is actually made and arrives in your hands!

    • @johnkanzler6646
      @johnkanzler6646 Рік тому

      This is a manual lens, Any focus stacking depends on your physical skills in wobbling back and forth 5mm over six shots, or using a tripod. I do both with a 60 mm 2X macro, I think I do okay 🙃 Looking forward to trying this one someday!

      A month later now and the lens is still not available at Amazon US except from a third party vendor that is charging a $90 premium. B&H and Adorama have it available for pre-order, but no stock yet. I expect that this lens is my best option, but I have a tiny nagging doubt about a fully manual lens, even on my R5. I want to get it in my hands and make sure I can live with that. I want to buy from a vendor that allows 100% returns with prepaid postage back (like Amazon) so that if I decide to return it I don't get dinged too bad. The Laowa site has the lens in stock, but it appears they don't accept returns. Does anyone know of another source?
      EDIT - I broke down and ordered one from the manufacturer. Arrived yesterday. I just started fooling around with it. The manual focus and exposure seems fine. The viewfinder so far seems bright enough and the exposures can be set just fine using the meter in manual mode or using AV. I have a lot to learn but I think this is going to be an excellent macro lens for my R5.

    I really want to purchase this lens, but as I also started using macro lenses for some wild reptile photography, I probably need AF and more reach. It would otherwise pair nicely with their 25 2.5-5x, which I use for insects. But then again, their 85 2x would be just as good for that, as I would stop down anyway and use a flash. The 200-600 G doesn't get close enough with its magnifcation, and the 70-200 II GM and 100-400 GM do good but also don't quite get there for small snakes, lizards, dragonflies, et cetera (what would you recommend for such animals)? If just there was a longer macro lens for Sony FE. I might give the Sigma 105 DN a try, but the reptiles are usually flee. There are of course the 150-200mm macro lenses for DSLR, but I'm not so sure. I haven't tried magnification extenders, ranox and so on, so I'm not sure what to expect. I do have the 70-200 GM II, and perhaps it could work with such accessories.

      You might want to try extension tubes and one of your longer lenses to get the working distance you want. The right extension tubes maintain AF but allow you to focus closer and increase magnification. Check out something like this: bhpho.to/39scgHu

      Thank you for the recommendation! How does one calculate the magnification when adding each extension tube? Are there better ways to achieve higher magnifcation? Some have mentioned Raynox macro conversion lenses. But again, I'm not familiar with the different tools. I would prefer something close to 1:1 for close-ups for smaller reptiles.

      I like extension tubes better than conversion lenses, because extension tubes have no optics in them...and thus don't mess with image quality.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I would say it is similar in many ways due to the Apochromatic design (which the Voigtlanders also have). The advantage of the Laowa is that it has higher magnification and a much lower price. The advantage of the Voigtlanders is that they have a bit nicer color, a nicer build, and do have electronics - which brings its own advantages.

  • @dougsmit1
    @dougsmit1 2 роки тому

    For Canon shooters the elephant in the room is the matter of the lens having no electric contacts which means the 100mm is east to focus at f/2.8 and expose at f/11 to insure placing the sharpest focus exactly where you want it. That leaves us with a decision. Buy the 100mm EF and put up with the weight and balance as well as the fact that the lens places infinity on the wrong side for those of us that 'speak Canon' OR buy the 90 which focuses the right way for Canon people and balances better. I suppose we could mention that the new 90 design won't accept a tripod collar while the 100mm could be used on a tripod better even if it was just an EF/RP adapter from a third party maker that understood that tripods are desirable for some uses. There is a third option which is obviously to wait and see if Laowa comes to their senses and realizes that taking away a feature and charging the same price was not a great move. For me, I did not buy the 100mm because of the wrong way infinity matter and did not buy the 85 which was overpriced for an f/5.6 with no electric contacts but focused correctly for Canon. My decision now will be based on digging out my old manual focusing macro and seeing how I do with the camera set to f/11 compared to what I get with the 15 year old Canon 100mm macro on an adapter. I know the Laowa will win on non-moving subjects but chasing bees on flowers made those electric contacts really handy even though I always use manual focus for macro. Another thing you might have addressed or even mentioned is how this new option will be with the upcoming Canon R7 and R10 crop bodies. Some of the older Laowa crop sensor lenses only came in Canon M or non-Canon mounts (not RF) so the 90 may be a decent answer there. I'm sure there will be a thousand more reviews to watch but it would be nice to know what Laowa has already sent out to special people who have been sworn to secrecy about this 90. If there is a newer one with proper electric contacts already in beta testing and I buy this one, what I say about Laowa will not be nice.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому

      So far it seems like the electronic contacts were a one-time thing. I hoped it was a trend, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

    • @richrollin4867
      @richrollin4867 2 роки тому +2

      But focusing at f2.8 and exposing at f11 relies heavily on the lens exhibiting no focus shift - it can be a disadvantage. This is why Canon's own RF macro's focus shift is a problem. By default, Sony lenses stop down to the selected aperture when focusing - what you see is what you get.

      Hi! Would you be able to clarify your comment a little more? I'm choosing a macro lens for my my canon eos R, and was debating between canon EF 100mm and laowa 90/100mm lenses. 90mm seemed like the better fit overall, but comments like yours are making me double guess myself.
      Suppose I went and got the 90mm lens, paired it with the canon R, and set the aperture to f/11 or even smaller. What would be the expected difference between using this laowa 90mm in native RF mount (no electronic contact with camera) vs laowa 100mm in EF mount with an EF-RF adapter (has electronic contact with camera)? (Aside from not having focus assist (only zooming or focus peeking to work with)).

    Thank you very much for the text review. I will like to know how it performs with a 60 megapixels Camera !? But I think the Laowa 90mm Lens do not live up to my very high expectations, I have the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0, I do not need 2:1 or 1:1 because I have a 60 megapixels sensor Camera which I often use in APSC mode and still have lots to crop from. In the last 10 to 12 years I have moved from 90/100 Macro Lenses towards 60/65mm Macro Lenses, I love my old analog Leica Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm 2.8 and I still hope for a new Lens that have the excellent built quality of the old Leica, the Leica have beautiful color rendering and very smooth bokeh.

    • @acouragefann
      @acouragefann 2 роки тому

      Judging from their previous lenses, I doubt the 90mm will have any trouble with the A7R IV. I used their 60 and 100mm on it and the only thing impeding sharpness were the effects of diffraction in 2:1 macro work at F5.6 and beyond - a limitation of physics, rather than the lens. Though by no means is this comment meant to knock the Voigtländer, which is undoubtedly a brilliant 0.5x macro.
