Expose for your highlights when in the bright sun so you can recover in POST if needed, what a solid piece of advice from a solid photographer like Mr Hoey who invites the same models through his long career and manages to deliver consistent good results with his photos..I guess long term relationships are returning back the fruits of the labor
I've been a pro photographer for 37 years and the sun has always been my enemy! Shooting outside in an open field at 12.00 in the middle of summer is a nightmare. These are great tips which I will be adopting. Never to late to learn!
@@julsjayfotosphotography5347 So true! I had to shoot at 1 pm for a client in 100°F weather! Got it done though and used some of the techniques shown here. This video gives me even more tipa than I thought.
Thanks for the tips. I live in the high desert of New Mexico, USA and have been forced to do two graduation shoots this past weekend in full sun between 12-3 pm. I tried to find shade but it wasn’t always possible and many photos came out with more contrast and bright spots than I’d like. I’ll try some of these tricks and see if I can improve my final shots. Thanks for putting out the great content.
Mr. Hoey, I just want to say thank you for being a photography instructor that I needed when it comes to learning about lighting (whether it's natural or artificial lighting). I have learned so much and I'm always excited to practice what I learned from you. You're a awesome photography instructor and keep up the great work, sir!
Thanks Alan. Interesting fact... We planned this video last summer and even filmed the first two parts. Then the sun disappeared for the rest of the day. This summer is VERY different with months of blisteringly hot and sunny days. I'm almost missing the rain 😉
I absolutely love the video and the tips. When shooting mostly in the studio I often forget small details whilst outside. Those are explained like to a 5 year old and the video is short you can come back to in any time (definitely saved to my favourites).
Hi Danny. Always sunny usually would sound like a dream here (UK) but after months of unbroken sun and abnormally high heat, I'm actually missing the rain!
It's amazing how much detail gets retained in shadows you might think are too dark whereas if the highlights are overexposed, it's just gone. I liked the full sun photos as well, it's a very natural feel especially with keeping the sunglasses on. Here in Australia we have a lot of sun but I love shooting portraits in the woods with plenty of natural shade that can be used. Always good to have some tips on how to deal with bright sun though as sometimes it's beyond our control and you have to get on with the job. Thanks Gavin
My favourite tutor along with my favourite model (and her partner)! What a treat! Of course again with some solid tips and awesome photos! Thank you! 👌😍👌
The day you post a new video is very happy day .. I was very afraid of taking shots is sunny days , but you make it very simple and amazing , thanks a lot my PROF Gavin .
Thanks Tony. I've been on plenty of photo sessions in the middle of open fields where the only shade is my softbox. It's a handy tool to have up your sleeve!
You guys inspire me so much! As a photography student I’m always coming back to your channel to get inspiration and to learn tips and tricks! I can’t wait to be working in the industry soon :)
Hey Gavin, I am watching almost every clip from you and everytimes the clips rocks. Thank you very much for the eforts and sharing your tpis in youtbe!
Excellent, Gavin. I have followed you since the days of printe mags, and you Are still going strong! 🤤 Lots of good advices, thanks! Kind Regards, Jan from DK
This video is well put together Gavin. and you get really good result that's all it needs is a bit of thought before you start. top information once again Gavin When is the next one.
Great tips as always Gavin. I'm gonna need them this Saturday, going to be baking hot here in the UK and I'll be in a field for 5 hours shooting re-enactments 😋
If there was a Desert Island Discs for UA-cam - and assuming multiple episodes were allowed - Mr Hoey's videos would definitely be on my list. Gavin, perhaps for the next video you could hook up the ol' Chauvet to a John Deere? That way you could mow the grass and create a pleasing smoke effect without the need for an extension cable!
How about using a white translucent umbrella to block the sun. A flash at very low power may also be thrown in as well to soften the transition between shadows and highlights.
Getting to the end and I was just beginning to think a Gavin Hoey portrait shoot without flash. How silly am I 😂 Loved the settings and as always beautfiul images mate 😊
One additional setup that can achieve the same look as the final photos in the video. Instead of shooting high speed sync simply use a ND filter that's four f stops down. This will give you a sink speed of 250th of a second You're still shooting at f 1.4 ISO64 and even the flash is still at 1/8 power You make up for the exposure difference using the slower shutter speed.
Hello :) Nice tutorial. Please make video about using flash with softbox, umbrella and beautidish, when you are outdoor after sun went to sleep (dark background, light up model in front).
Living in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 these are the conditions in which I do 90% of my work. Today I learned to how the sun can be your hair light. Question!!! Gavin, what are your thoughts on music during a photo shoot? Could make for a good topic next video.
Hi Marcus. For me music is 100% essential for a photoshoot except in one case... if it's being filmed for UA-cam. Copyright, editing and audio means we HAVE to film without music... it's weird!
Hi Gavin, great video. White balance in colorful areas, Let’s say you’re shooting in a lavender field, or a golf course, how do you keep correct white balance for the model without affecting the environment? The same question how do partial shade affects the subject’s color. Is it possible to do in camera and not with masks in post?
I like to use flash in these situations. The problem sometimes I have is balancing the temperature of the day and the flash. Specifically if I am using ND filters
Great video Gavin. What size Glow softbox did you use? I see there are 3 sizes on the Adorama website. I have the AD400 and need a soft box like the one you used. Thanks again for all your great and helpful videos!
Using your softbox to create shade... brilliant!

I feel you. You know never to shoot between 10 am and 3pm,but yet sometimes a client can't and you have to do it in the most harsh sun imaginable.

Some great advice in this one! Enjoyed
Good down to earth explanation, nice photos and what a cool location.
It was not mentioned in the video, but your choice of colours - I mean, what the model wears - plays a big part in the overall images. Kudos
Everytime I see Gavin's videos reminds me about Roberto Benigni in "La vita e bella" 🤣👌Nice tips, as always 😊

Love it! Nice work as always, Gavin and Jade!
I love when I see the softness of the light in one side of the model, this id the kind of picture I would like to shoot
That was great, all good examples of shooting in direct sun and how to work around those issues.
Thanks Steve, it's something I've had to do way more this year (UK heatwave) then I normal!!!

Good question. Av (or just A mode on an Olympus) until we went to flash, then it's M mode all the way.
