Do you think this type of journalism is worth having on major publications like Independet? Slamming people especially us fun, vinyl collectors? Don't hate the hobby, find a hobby yourself!
I have to say I feel that’s a fairly accurate description, although I have been called worse. If I was in the crowd when Moses was reading out the 10 Commandments from the stone tablet I'd be the one yelling 'I've got this on vinyl!!!'
Over the past 5 years, I’ve become more or less astounding by the petty “thinkpieces” formerly reputable publications have seen fit to print. You hit the nail on the head, people are passive aggressively venting their interpersonal issues to the whole world and acting like it qualifies as real journalism. It truly is a low point for the profession.
I have been married almost 37 years. My wife was happy when I started buying vinyl. She enjoys seeing me happy. When out looking for records, I make an effort to bring home something she likes. Flowers, a ceramic bunny, etc. It says I love you and am thinking of you. This lady and husband need to learn how to get along.
THATS the difference between your wife and this woman. She doesnt want to see her man happy. WHY? Thats his thing. Be happy for him. Have your own hobbies too.
as a reporter myself, i honestly don’t consider silly opinion pieces like this “journalism” in the same way you would a straight news article. i just look at it as an…odd (to say the least) opinion piece. completely agree with you regarding the article’s content though - sounds like someone being negative just for the sake of being negative…
Yes, this type of stuff brings shame to actual journalists. Its a total opinion pice. I dont get how The Independent has this run. Must have been a slow week.
I agree with you; there is enough dark things in the world right now, so to write something that has nothing about inspire or do good to it, talks more about the journalist than anything else.
hahahahahaha! You feel me. She doesnt love him. This is BEYOND just the records. This is lowkey a relationship problem that she is airing out. She needs therapy.
Yeah apparently the best way to be heard these days is to use big words and disrespect somebody or much worse a whole collective. So many politicians, journalists and trolls on social media playing this game it's just getting exhausting.
I'm of the original vinyl collectors from back in the day. Although when cassettes became a more popular format I used to, even then brag that I had the vinyl. They'd say you can't play that in the car. I'd say I have a tape deck. I'll tape it. It'll sound much better on my home made tape than your prerecorded tape. Yeah, I guess I was as snobby in the 80s as the new batch are now.
Hi there Tina. Unbelievable. How can someone criticize a passion and pastime. Life is difficult enough. Everyone has a passion or a pastime. Some collect lunch boxes on eBay. Who am I to judge what one spends their hard earned money. Let us not judge... let us enjoy what the world has for us to enjoy and let our souls be fulfilled.
"I should know. A third of my dining room is dedicated to my husband's precious LP collection..." Hey, I don't think any more needs to be said. I think some marriage counselling is in order...
haha... nice vid!! Yep.... i think this article can be distilled down to "I'm a little needy right now because my husband has a hobby he really enjoys that doesn't involve me." Yeah... pretty lazy, low level, click bait .... erm... 'journalism'. But thats the way of modern media.... Just glorified Facebook posts. Its all about the click and nothing else. But hey.... thats why music (on any format)is so vital. Life affirming stuff
So preferring the fuller sound of vinyl and appreciating the art of an LP is wrong? I think she is the snob. I love my vinyl. Edit - Just got to the part about her husband. Sounds like she’s just down on him. Poor chap. I would run for the hills. Lol.
Right? POOR GUY. It's all about him. She doesnt care about the rekkids, lets be real. Its because they are attached to him. She cant stand him. I feel bad.
The karen of the vinyl community is what I called her. This annoyed me on so many levels as she obviously doesn't understand the reason why we collect such things.
I Don't Understand this Article.... Why is She being Mean to Us?. If I wasn't proud to be a record guy... And a big Boy.. She found almost made me Cry... ( Sniff Sniff)....
Good to see you back Guru, was wondering if you're OK. Don't you think this kind of article (& attitude) says more about her than any of us? Take care and stay safe from me in Bayern.
I read this article a few times and I’m drawing a parallel that’s worth mentioning. I suspect Katie Edwards could be married to an audiophile. I could be wrong but it’s distinctly possible. The article provided a clue or two. By “audiophile” I don’t mean one of the nice Steve Guttenberg-like audiophiles either, but instead it could be one of “those” audiophiles, you know the type, the one’s who look down on others for having a music taste not as “refined” as their own, and also for committing the mortal sin of owning inferior pieces of kit under $25,000 U.S. dollars in which to listen, as well. These spackleheads congregate quite well amongst their own….and have been called out on various UA-cam channels for mocking anyone who enjoys a record on a entry-level turntable or a Crosley Cruiser…..so there is THAT, and I suspect Katie runs around, reluctantly at times, within these particular circles, rolling her eyes. Even if this is the case, I will not grant her points as if she’s been a victim to her husband’s adventures in record collecting. Katie Edwards sounds like a snob whose at odds with other forms of snobbery that isn’t her kind of snobbery, so she has to snob-off in an article. I don’t think any media format regarding music is superior and that’s because we all listening quite differently. I do think Katie may be telling the truth when she claims to be unable to tell the difference between vinyl and digital music. I know a lot of people who say the very same thing. I can tell the difference, but is it night & day? No. All formats have potential advantages & disadvantages that levels the playing field for everyone to enjoy in their own way. Fortunately the record enthusiasts I know don’t behave like they are better than those who prefer their iPods. It should be about the music itself and sharing in that experience, and far, far less about the format or the equipment that’s playing it. But that’s just me. It’s an amateurish opinion piece.
Great video VG! The journalist and her editor picked such a clickbait title. I haven't been to a Dinner party since the start of COVID and realistically, I don't have a ton of friends who have the same musical tastes as me. Sadly, her husband probably gets more satisfaction (sexual or otherwise) from his LPs than her. Perhaps a better title for the article would have been "I hate my husband the vinyl collector."
After watching this video I looked up Katie Edwards article on the Independent and researched her background.I have come to the conclusion it is Ms Edwards who has the problem. She claims to be a 'cultural commentator' has a PhD in biblical studies and is currently a Fellow in theology. Her loathing of record collectors implied she considers it idolatry; eg, records are the Golden Calf for record collectors. Her commentary about records is filled with supposition and inaccuracies. She failed as a journalist to even do the basic minimum research to be considered credible. She also took issue with her husband's record collection. The polarizing timbre of her voice, in my opinion, is the issue isn't so much collecting records is a pointless endeavor, but not actually playing Bob Seger's, Horizontal Bop enough. My suggestion for her husband is to listen to his Tammy Wynette record, D-I-V-O-R-C-E.. Her problem is the 'rut' and not the 'groove'.
The Protest Virus is running rampant. A simple solution for that lady is to groove to your last video, "Valentine's Day Perfect DJ Vinyl Mix" Her heart and hate will melt for sure. Go Girl Go !!!
If she's making all the money and he's spending it on his hobby at the expense of her wants and needs, I see the gripe. But that's a personal issue that they need to deal with.
Did he divorce her? Somehow some women just don't get it when it comes to vinyl records. Like I had a man who didn't like vinyl record collecting, per se. Hasn't happened to me. He loves it.
I have a simple solution to her problem. Divorce. Her entire rant is a complaint based on her husband and his collection and collecting/playing of records. Maybe he's the one with a good income.

It also offered the opportunity to the artists to make a living, both designers and musicians. When was the last time you heard of a golden record?
