When I moved to Toronto in 1982 the first record store I went to was Sam The Record Man. The store was enormous and Sam Sniderman greeted me by saying You look lost. He proceeded to show me around the store and introduce me to his sales team and stressed that they will find what you want. Before the internet this meant massive cross referencing books. I say this because back then the stores were staffed with customer service people who loved what they were doing. Today a visit to a store like Kops or Sonic Boom is devoid of customer service. Complete indifference is the order of the day. And calling used records from 40 years ago vintage as a way to jack up the price is quite a pisser.

Great video - like you I'm an avid fan of the lady. Have all her stuff on vinyl up to Bulletproof Heart. I grew up in apartheid era South Africa - a skinny little gay guy in high school sporting a peroxide blonde box cut hairstyle like Ms Jones had at that time - well, not blonde of course. I didn't share my inspiration for my haircut out of pure fear. She remains one of my idols - in music and the lady herself - she does it her way and to hell with anyone who doesn't get it. Anyway - HELP please - I am after a rare album even harder to locate I think than Hurricaine. The album is Living my Life - yes, it is easy to find and purchase and I absolutely love the album. BUT, the first time I heard it was back in Johanessburg in the late 80's - visiting a friend of a friend who had a great vinyl collection. Among them was Living my Life and I loved it. Here's the thing... on side 2 of the album was Man around the House which became my favourite track. My friend kindly gave me a blank cassette so I could record it on his Hi Fi - yes, that is going way back if people don't know what I just typed. Those were the days indeed. Now, that track was only released years later on the double CD of Compass Point Sessions and is even noted as previously unreleased. Now, I didn't imagine it and I cannot remember if it was printed on the album as a featured track but be sure, I had it. Now it must be a mistake in the pressing ( a fabulous error if you ask me) as it was an outtake. Has anyone seen or heard of that issue of the album? I have trawled/slogged through Discogs looking at every release in every country and the track listing is always the same. That album I copied had it on there and I think Ring of Fire as well. I shall also keep my eyes peeled for Hurricaine. I'm always visiting low key basement vinyl shops and always find a treasure = perhaps it will turn up. Thanks again. Great video and you look great too ...😉

Hello there ! Since covid passed , a bunch of new record stores have popped up in my area , and they’re thriving and expanding. That goes for customer base , premises and their contacts. They’re capable of getting me almost everything i ask for. Used or new releases , and for fair prices. So I’ve slowly shifted from online to shops for the last three years. Stay cool !

One great new recording artist that I admire very much is Aldous Harding...her songs are so nuanced, so well crafted. Her movements when she performs are so otherworldly...I have all her albums so far and cherish them...I also dig the sisters CocoRosie...they are also otherworldly...their appear surreal with painted on mustaches & thick grease paint eyebrows...their songs are like nothing you've ever heard, a very unique blend of folk, psychedelia, classical, world, tribal with fairy tale vibes. One sister plays the harp and piano, the other plays whistles, bells, and toys. They are backed up by uniquely versatile virtuoso musicians. They sometimes play with an all East Indian band. Very mystical!

The Black Angels! Great contemporary psychedelic band...they capture the sound & spirit of 1967 without sounding retro...I watched a documentary about Charles Manson & his family and their life on the ranch full of drugs and alcohol...The music of the Black Angels was played as a soundtrack and it fit it to a T. Especially the drug scenes.

Great topic, I’ve got friend that almost buy exclusively online. I still enjoy shopping at Record stores 95% of the time. It is the thrill of finding records of artist from a genre you dig, but have heard of them. You can always find bargains at a shop, but can’t do that very often online. That’s why I rarely buy vinyl from websites.

It’s a waiting game now.. Waiting online for an auction no one knows is going on and you get that original copy of The Stooges self titled. Waiting at your local thrift shop that you go to every week to find that 3$ copy of Spring or Indian Summer. The waits are getting longer in between finds but one thing is for sure, I would not have found a lot of my collection without the internet or thrift shops. Record stores, for me, are about community and making connections with people that have the same hobby/ interest in music. I prefer a great in store find, but as I said, a good portion of my collection wouldn’t exist without the internet.

Hello, VG! Good to see your post, as always! I prefer in person to buy records, even if someone beat me to the GOOD records at a Thrift Store 😅! There's always good conversations with others, buying in person. But sometimes, I look online if I know that a favorite record I'd like to purchase has been re-issued, and it is a record that I have been looking for for years, then I'd buy it on line. But I tell you, VG, there's nothing like finding a record in person that ends up being a surprise HIT, either for the album cover, or the song listing on the back cover, or a combination of both.

I miss having access to a record store and forging a relationship with that store to get my hands on the new releases or reissues that hit every month. I love the contact with people and music fans of all genres and the relationships that can develop. Today, I have access online to all my favorites, but I would prefer a more complete experience that the record stores can provide. Nice to see you again and I miss your music videos. Take care.

As I've already stated I enjoy online as well as visiting record stores. But after hearing your thoughts via this video, I must say that record were more fun back in the 70' & 80's. But the magic began to fade around the time CDs were introduced. I resisted CDs at first and was disappointed that record stores were stocking less records and more CDs. I live in Providence RI and back in the 70'-80's there were plenty of quality record stores selling both new releases and used. There was Round Again Records, Goldies, Tom's Tracks, Fast Forward Records, Lad's, The Beacon Shop, Strawberries, Academy Records and a few more whose names I have forgotten. Back in the day I would spend all Saturday morning into late afternoon visiting as many as I had time for. Now there are only 4 quality record stores; Olympia Records, Armageddon Records, Analogue Records & The Original Round Again Records still in business since the early 70's. The owner of Round Again is in his early 80's, very hip, a record collector who is into Jazz, Blues and show tunes. He doesn't know much about Rock, so you can still get good deals in that genre. Like one time I found the first four Killing Joke albums for $2.50 each. They weren't sealed, but in NM condition. I asked the owner what he knew about the band and he said as far as he knew they were just another punk band, which they are not. Thus the low price tag. So I went home delighted since the night before some one had told me to look into Killing Joke. My favorite record store now is Armageddon Records. Besides their store they also sell online through Discogs. I do a lot of business with them, trading in records to get records. But I agree that it was a bit more exciting back in the day, especially the cut out bins! The cut out bins in department stores like Zayers, Atlantic dept store, K-Mart and such were full of gold! Sealed records for .99 or sometimes even 2 for a dollar! My best finds in the cut out bins were the 3 Island Sparks albums, The Stooges first album, Flaming Groovies Teenage Head, Hapshash & the Coloured Coat debut from 1967. A gem of a record! (if you don't know that band they were Spooky Tooth without Gary Wright.) to name just a few. I passed up Paul Kossoff's Back Street Crawler back then, it was just a few dollars with a little cut corner. Now it sells for much more! I found a copy on Discogs for $25. It is used in VG+ condition so I am considering ordering it. So now that I think of it, I do miss record store crate digging back in the 70's and 80's. But you know what is cool? Nowadays I've been buying and listening to music that I didn't have time, or the money to buy and listen to back in the day. I mean there was so much great music coming out on a monthly basis back in the 60's and 70"s that I didn't have the time to hear it all. So now I can sit in the comfort of my home and order up records by bands from past that I never got into at the time. Like for instance I've ordered the Slade reissues on splatter vinyl, which is so exciting. I always liked Slade, but never bought their records. Now I have 6 beautiful colored vinyl copies to play with. OK, "I've got blisters on my fingers" from all this typing. Byfornow

I most always buy from local record shops. Online shipping has improved over the last few years with better mailers and delivery times. My problem with online purchases is the mail man. Leaving records in the rain or sun when a covered porch is only a few steps away...

Here in Australia (as I suspect is the case elsewhere also) in store record prices have skyrocketed to absurd prices in a lot of instances for both new and second hand so nowadays I tend to shop online as that way I can attempt to source better pricing. That said I still try and support any physical record store when I can as most also have online shops as well.

I’d take the in person record purchase/find over buying online any day. The thrill of the unexpected find always puts a smile on my face. Saying that online can be thrilling with eBay or Discogs. But I have purchased a few records on the realtime whatnot auctions and have found this to be a great thrill. Still somewhat unexpected! Saying all this, in person followed by online.

I am 73 and have been buying records since I was 13. The first record I ever bought was the Beatles 2nd album which I adored. I loved visiting the local record stores. I bought mostly 45's back then. I would get a rush while looking through new releases. I remember hearing the Kinks "Well Respected Man" on my little red radio one winter morning. It was a freezing snowy Saturday, but I had to go out and walk the mile to the nearest record store to purchase the 45. Since 1964 I have been an avid record buyer spending hours in record stores with several records in my hands trying to decide which one to get since I didn't have that much money. Sometimes I would buy what I called a "chance album". A record by a band I had no clue who they were, but I liked the album art. For example, The Velvet Underground's debut Banana album, which completely blew my mind. Mother's of Invention Freak Out, which also blew me away! Fast forward to now... I am retired and although I still enjoy visiting used record shops, trading in records for new ones and all that fun, I enjoy buying online very much as well. I have such a fun time, ("All Aboard For Fun Time", Iggy!) browsing through Discogs. I'm up 1, 2AM searching for records that I might have missed out on throughout the years and putting them in my cart. Kind of like when I was younger trying to decide which records I could afford and which ones had to go back in the bin. I've been an avid follower of many genres of music, like rock, folk, blues, jazz, experimental, and just a few years ago I fell under the spell of Black Metal. So in conclusion, I dig both online & brick and mortar record store hunting. I really dig The Vinyl Guru channel. You are so hip and cool... I love the way you talk with that kind of beat lingo. Check out my channel, I have lots of recordings in my playlist of bands I was in throughout the years, playing guitar and singing my own original songs. Byefornow.
