This is my pet peeve. In Africa, we allow volunteers from all over the world, not just European volunteers, to have easy access to young kids with minimal supervision and background checks. Even allowing donors and visitors to interact with the kids in orphanages, should be an absolute no no.

A friend of mine signed up for peace corps. She is of Ghanaian decent. They placed her in Eastern Europe. This happened to another friend of mine as well. It was annoying, because I felt priority should be given to those of African decent to volunteer in the continent because many times the kids on the continent needed to see a global perspective of people of color.

My friend born in South Sudan volunteered for peace corps and went to Eswatini and was the only black volunteer.
First during orientation local black partners could not believe a black person who looked obviously African was a US peace corps volunteer.
Then he almost had a fight with two white South African guys because he was with white Americans and these guys were pressing him saying but where are you really from when he said he was American. Off course he is from South Sudan but he was getting a racist vibe but they sorted it out.

With regard to Africa, it's more about the ego than helping... People who normally go to help, have not any really capacity to help anyone, let alone, themselves. It's more of the thrill of it. And the fact it makes them feel good about yourself. I'm not against people feeling good about yourself, but feeling good about yourself doesn't help those who need help. To sum up, the charity helps the giver more than the receiver... In the west, everyone is searching for happiness, sometimes they need people to be vulnerable so they can show compare themselves to those people.

I was just watching a video not too long ago about the issues in South Africa regarding apartheid and the issues that it is still causing. Within the video the reporter made a comment about BLACK AFRICANS . I went ballistic!!! There should be no such thing as a black African!!!!! Being African is all about blackness!!!!! That statement alone is a major issue for me. Without white South Africans being there skin color would never be an issue. The problem for Africa will always be our inability to not help the next person or not accept aid from the same people who caused our suffering. The minute we focus on Africa as a WHOLE and let go of all of these colonial borders within the continent, Africa will rise. We have to stop the separation that was placed within our motherland!!!!!! He said of their budgets, less than 1% actually gets to the work to be done, the rest is used on paying massive salaries, living and eating in five star hotels, plush offices, having never ending catered meetings, first or business class international flights etc. He said it's the biggest fraud he has ever seen in person and he will be returning to Africa when he has gotten enough experience to get a high level job to make change, but I doubt he is strong willed enough to execute his plan...

However, now, I’ve just forwarded this video to her. I know quite a few Europeans, often Caucasians, who believe they’re needed as volunteers in Africa. African doesn’t need western volunteers. It just needs food leaders to solve her problems. London was once full of homeless children and thieves and they dumped them all in Australia. Africa doesn’t have that option so her leaders must ask indigenous Africans for help and provide them with the resources they need to do a better job without us looking like beggars. Our continent is ridiculously rich. Just bad leaders and neocolonialism made us poor.

There's nothing wrong with having volunteers. This girl doesn't speak for ghanians, she didn't even visit there growing up never mind spend significant time there. Volunteers are fine and so is aid. Many countries receive them. It only becomes a problem if those people come there with their own agendas and aims. As long as you're not dependent and on the agenda of others there is nothing wrong with any of this. What africa doesn't need more is missionaries, european and other foreign exploiters and racists (and they all come all the time using the people but we're worried about the ones that will make us look like we need help ).

She's half ghanian and in this video is positioned as representing ghana for some reason. That's why I addressed it. It's not simply aid that's the issue, it's being entirely dependent on it and whatever demands might be attached that can be a problem. If we can get finances, investments etc with minimal down sides, it's perfectly fine.
I just think it's a bad habit to automatically look at that as being less than. All countries need or borrow money. We just need to find better ways of where we get it from, when, and the terms and conditions.

This was a good interview, I'm glad she was able to recognize her white savior complex & works to change that narrative. It's the same way with missionaries & photographers making money off of poverty porn, showing the faces & naked bodies of black children while we all know it's illegal to do so.
If she's interested, she should contact No White Saviors & maybe collaborate with them. I think her story (of someone who volunteered in Africa & realized the error of their ways) could help reach masses of people who think white saviorism is a myth. Of course, there are ways to help with that saviorism mentality - for those who would want to argue with me.
