MMA fighters have to worry about takedowns. Much of punching power comes from the legs, so when you train to defend against takedowns, mma fighters don’t sit down on their punches the way boxers do.

That’s why they usually look so awkward throwing. And even for the ones that do, the nature of the sport doesn’t allow them to fully commit on their punches the way boxers do. MMA fighters have to worry about takedowns. Much of punching power comes from the legs, so when you train to defend against takedowns, mma fighters don’t sit down on their punches the way boxers do.
