The four biggest promotional influences on modern North American wrestling are AJPW heavyweights, NJPW juniors, AAA, and ECW. And none of those influences are a good thing. Frankly, when I go back and watch WCW and WWF's mid/late 90's hot periods, those influences are already creeping in. It worked for short term interest, but it all ultimately led us to this point where there's no psychology (Japan and Mexico), or there's anti-psychology (ECW), everything is either a choreographed spotfest gymnastics routine (AAA and NJPW juniors), a garbage match (ECW), or idiots standing around trading shoot chops and killing every finishing move/hold that's ever been invented (AJPW). It's no wonder that the wrestling business is dead in North America given that it abandoned it's traditional psychology in favor of Japanese or Mexican psychology. And also interesting that the only North American promotional influence is ECW, which was a small time niche promotion that never could have been deemed a successful business. Also worth noting that Meltzer championed all four of these promotions and their styles in the 90's... Meltzer has lowkey done as much damage to North American wrestling as those four promotional influences have.
That's a load of jibberish. Pro rassling 101: give the people a reason to care. Heel champion being "evil" . The journey of the good guy overcoming the odds to win the championship. I blame the Internet. They want to please everyone and reach far and wide.

@@personperson2380 I honestly didn't think it was even open to debate anymore that North American wrestling is dead..... It's dead because it can't and doesn't draw. Nobody watches it. Look at the TV numbers. Compare those national ratings to local ratings of territories 40 years ago? Compare it to WCW numbers in 1991 or 1993, their lowest point. Compare it to the numbers even 15 years ago. Jerry Jarrett had more people watching Saturday morning wrestling in Memphis, even in the 90's when they couldn't draw flies to MSC, than AEW gets in a week of Dynamite and Rampage combined. And that's one city vs national TV. TNA had better ratings in the mid 2000's than AEW does, for crying out loud. AEW would kill for WCW 2000 ratings.
