FYI you don’t need to put seeds in the refrigerator. I would lose my mind if that was the case 😂. I keep all of my seeds in ziplock bags inside of a plastic container with a lid. My oldest seeds are probably 8-9yrs old and they still germinate just fine. A lot of Seeds tend to last much longer than a lot of gardeners lead on.
I'm having a hard time getting lettuce to germinate right now. I was able to get spinach and carrots to germinate weeks ago and grew lettuce all summer. I really think peat mixed with compost makes a big difference getting things like that to germinate especially in warm soil. That seems to be the only thing that's different with my lettuce right now.
Older lettuce seeds can go bad if they are old. Otherwise, it just might be one of those things. I just started gardening, here in southeastern TN. I lived in Southern CA for 36 years and didn't ever think about gardening, but man I would love to have the weather I grew up with out here! Perfect weather 364 days a year. I can't believe I never took advantage, I have already had a very successful gardening experience but it's been entirely revolving around the weather. I took it for granted and try to encourage everyone I know back home to start a garden! I wish I could have my cake and eat it too!

You can still plant collard greens! I plant Georgia collard greens and they get over 3 ft high. I'm in Central Oregon. My Georgia collard greens grew through the entire winter in my greenhouse last year which fed my chickens and my family well. In fact my Georgia collards were still growing in the spring and I planted seeds in between them and as they grew I tore out the big ones! You can plant lettuce now if you put a board up and they get some shade. You don't like collard greens then you should try steaming them and then mixing in bacon pieces. That's the only way my kids will eat them and they loved it with mac and cheese. 🙏💪🌱🥰

The thing you need to learn and wrap your head around is there is no need to dig the compost in. Using it as a mulch layer works better and reduces your weeds. The reason your plants bolt with the heat later in the season is excess fertilizer

You’re always so informative! If I direct sow and the seeds germinate right before a heat wave, could I possibly need to resow? Just wondering if my collard seedlings are stunted after a week of daytime temps well into the 90s. Thanks!
They should not be stunted. As long as they survive the heat, they should grow fine. Hi Gary, thank you for your videos. I am learning a lot. I have a couple of questions. What wood planks are you using as a border on your bet? Also, I have some horse manure who are fed only alfalfa. Would it be all right to mix that in with my soil and then plant? I have never planted before so this would be the first year my yard for a vegetable bed.
I use pressure treated lumber. You can use manure that has alfalfa in it. Manures should sit 1 year to decompose before using. Lots of seeds in packets? Some yes, some not. The seed packet for birdhouse gourds only had 3 seeds. Two of them grew. However, I can save the seeds I do get for next year. I want to see about making birdhouses with whatever I get. They have found seeds in ancient Egyptian pyramids and they grow.
Well true but generally for the ones I am showing. Saving seeds is a great way to do it. Hot tip for your vid’s. No one uses farenheit outside your country. Or miles etc but that’s a different topic. Please just use base 10 measurements as well because otherwise it’s gobbledygook for the rest of the world. Thx! Love your vids ❤ applies to feet inches etc also
Yeah but 90% of my viewers are from the USA. 2.5 centimeters equals 1 inch. I do use my hand and fingers as general spacing which should help. I can add in cm.

Manures should sit 1 year to decompose before using.

im gearing up to plant alot of fall/winter greens?
Not germinate? Well seeds do germinate if they are a couple years old if they are kept in the house.

Question: What color of dirt is best to grow in your backyard or does it matter ?
It doesnt matter. My soil starts with lots of read clay. As I add in peat and more and more compost it changes over time.

I'm in Texas. Too early?
For these crops yes. Check out what to plant in July and August on my channel. You can start with those till it cools down. Good luck.
Hi, if your growing your sponach for the leaves, why dont you just open a long row and drop the seeds in that way, as opposed to singular holes? Thanks
You can. Just habit for me. A very long row, I would trench.

I’ve heard pulling plants up like a big tomato plant can destroy the permaculture. I take it loosening up the soil 4-5 inches doesn’t do the same damage?
It does but I never found it to be a worry. Just depends on how you want to grow.

Stupid question, but when you say compost, what exactly is that? What are some good brands? Please help this new "gardener."
Compost is fully decomposed organic matter. I actually dont think there is good bagged brand out there. Composting yourself is best if you have space.

If I plant these in raised beds inside a poly tunnel in zone 8 b, would that be enough protection? Or would they still need plastic over the bed?
I think that would be plenty. No extra plastic needed.

4 fingers I get. But numpty inch what? No good maths for that
The seed packs give a basic planting distance that works. I tend to plant a little bit closer. It doesnt need to be exact.
