How did you get the shapes the way you presented them? I tried recreating the shapes you had as a way to practice and follow along, but I ended up creating stroke outlines from the shape with no fill, but I couldn't cut out the same portions your removed.
The top shape is just 2 circles with the strokes outlined (object > path > outline stroke), it was a 20 or 30 pt stroke on each of them. The bottom shape is 2 circles again but I did a negative offset path on each of them, around 20 px, and left the stroke. Let me know if that works for you or if you need more help!

Good beginner tool, bit temperamental with tiny gaps and making unfamiliar pieces? But other than that its good to go..
I would like to see an update to this tool, just not really sure what to tell the developers with regards to what they should add!?
