Lil Darkie is one of my favorite artists and is, quite frankly, NOT talked about enough in hip hop crowds because he has a metal and punk influence. I believe a huge part of the beauty of hip hop and rap is its ability to be diverse and still stand out in every genre it presents itself in and the roots of hip hop is from people with no connections, no nepotism, no contracted obligations, and no selling out. Wu Tang Clan is the most iconic rap group of all time and they have endless punk rock notes, yet the demographic of artists that keep that style alive still go unspoken of by people with mainstream or rather larger platforms to speak of it on. Juice Wrld, XXX, Post Malone, Lil Uzi, 21, Playboy Carti, the success of sound cloud rappers influenced the industry heavily and brought some new styles and innovations. And honstely even lil pump despite his contoversial personality had some enjoyable music. Something the industry lacks heavily today, honestly in the last 2-3 years I heard less and less rap music. The rap music in my country is stagnating since the late 2010s, you can listen to a song from 2018 and it won't sound different to songs today. Same happened to the US market a little bit later, since 2-3 years I feel like hearing the same type of songs over and over again. For me rap got boring, in the 2010s rap from 2010 feeled different then rap from 2013, rap from 2013 different from rap in 2016 etc. But rap from 2024? Honestly could mostly be released in 2021.
As someone who liked this style of music somewhat back then, there is no way in hell this comment section is crying about missing this type of trash music with zero substance or longevity in 2024.

Retrospectively everyone mentions how good 2016-2018 was (and in some ways it was, because it was like peak-trap) but beyond the houseparties and hazy basement stu's (what I was up to at the time finishing up hs/starting college), the music genuinely sucked. Like it's hard to listen to now, and this trip thru memory lane definitely reminds me that lol (though I will say sounds like deconstructed-club/PC-music/pre-2019-hyperpop from the 2016-2018 era I can still listen to just not any of the soundcloud shit or folkpunk).
