His manager did not want him to sing that song. Elvis didn't listen to him. Elvis new what it was like to be raised in a ghetto, because he was raised in the ghetto in extreme poverty. Thank you., 🤗

Elvis lived this song. He was born in 1935 in Mississipi as a twin the other baby was stillborn and they were poor he was buried in a shoe box. Elvis loved in a black neighborhood, sang in a black church and later when he was 13 moved to Memphis. He hung out with Beal e street performers, Mosley black. I was a child of the 50's and it was a segregated country. White stations would not play black singers till Elvis changed that. He was not only banned because of his movements, he was banned for his association with blacks. He was an advocate for Black prrformers. You must watch "Elvis Presley and the Black Community" The Echo Will never die. On youtube. Thanks ,Be Blessrd

A little tidbit of information...Whitney Houston's mother, Cissy Houston, was one of the backup singers for Elvis.

You should listen to “ If I can Dream” Elvis dedicated to Martin Luther King. Elvis grew up in Tupelo Mississippi ghetto. Elvis knew of what he sang!

"Elvis Presley - In the Ghetto" It was a major hit released in 1969 as a part of Elvis
comeback album. It was Elvis first creative recording since the Elvis Comeback
Special, other hits recorded at this session were "Suspicious Minds", Kentucky Rain",
and "Don´t Cry Daddy". Thanks Ebony & Ivory, for a great reaction video by Elvis. 🎸🎤

Elvis grew up in a Tupelo, Mississippi ghetto; Dad, Vern, was in jail for bad checks. At age 14, they moved to the Memphis, Tennessee projects. He sang in a black church...Gospel was his first love...he sang "That's All Right, Mama" in 1954, when a teenager for his Mother's birthday, at Sun Records. He was a Spec 4 in the Army, got out in 2 years. Released "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956 to a massive amount of controversy from religious groups because of his movements. He made a string of musical romance movies, that he didn't want to do. Finally got a decent script for "King Creole", his only b&w movie. He just wanted to make music. His singing career took a dip when his wife left him, and the Beatles arrived, his "Comeback Tour" helped immensely. When he sang "In the Ghetto", which his manager thought would kill his career, he fought to sing it, (it was written by Mac Davis, who originally titled it "The Vicious Circle") and here we are...as relevent, and often played, today, 57 years later, as it was in 1969, when it was released. His backup singers were the Sweet Inspirations, which included Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston. Thank you for your great reaction.

Elvis always brings it. Mac Davis wrote it. He almost got cancelled because of it because of the time.

Two tidbits about this song. Not once does he mention race, which is very important. and two, one of the lady backup singers was Whitney Houston's Mom I believe.

Nothing has changed in the Ghetto. This song was not unique to the era when Elvis sang about it. It is still happening in Chicago and most major cities in the US.
Another great song by Elvis is "If I Can Dream", which was dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr after his assassination.

Land of free...that was ironic wasn't it? American civil war ended in 1865. The Civil Right Act was signed by president Johnson in 1964, after 100 hundred years! This beautiful song speaks of something that is actual these days in many parts of the world. African American people have suffered terrible injustice but they are not the only ones. Wherever is poverty there you find the ghettos.

Take a good look around, the social problems that existed back in 1969, poverty, ghettos, etc; are just as bad, if not worse, now.

The only thing that troubles me with this song (and nobody seems to address) is, why doesn't the desperate young man use the money he spent on buying a gun, to buy food?

It's difficult to listen to because this cycle has been going on for over half a century.
