    Really excited for this one. Haven't been disappointed by a Steve McQueen outing yet so I'm sure it'll be great. I'm also happy to see Brian Tyree Henry getting more recognition, his work in Atlanta is fantastic.

    Excellent film. Smart, doesn't pull punches, doesn't hold your hand, full of painfully real people and experiences. So much to see, can't wait to watch it again at home at some point.

    I saw Widows tonight - I though it was absolutely superb. The acting throughout-from the entire cast was first-class, the direction was outstanding. Do yourself a favour and go see this, one of the best films of the year so far.

    I usually agree with Mark, and certainly I completely agree with his remarks on sense of place, the political balance and the points being made. I completely disagree on the sense of pace. I felt it required tightening, the score felt incidental rather than driving and at times there was a feeling the film was either flabby or needed more of other characters. At the showing I was at there was at least one walk out and several going to get drinks mid film.
    Don't get me wrong there is s huge amount to love about this film, the cinematography and use of reflection to embody Hopper-esque alienation is worth the ticket to see alone, but somehow I expected more.
    A solid 8/10 when I was expecting a 10.

    I'd be hard pressed to think of a review where Mark Kermode has been *more* enthusiastic about a film than this. Definitely a very convincing argument to see it just based on this.

    Wanted to like this movie so much more and while it’s got a great plot, great acting and some brilliant directed moments I do feel like it was bogged in a lot of secondary plot points when it reality if the first half of the film was just like the second film it would be a classic.

  • @ahdvd
    @ahdvd 5 років тому +21

    I really wanted to like this movie, but just couldn't. Agree that it's filled with great performances, especially Viola Davis and Daniel Kaluuya, but it's unnecessarily baggy with characters that serve no purpose but to try and strengthen the movies setting rather than focusing on the main characters. I get that perhaps they were trying to show the similarities between politicians and actual crooks but we don't get anywhere near the flashbacks needed between the wives and their husbands to make this comparison, making Colin Farrell's and Robert Duval's characters completely redundant and their 30+ minutes of screen time could have been much better put to use strengthening other weakened characters and plot points.
    Michelle Rodriguez's character was barely fleshed out when she is meant to be one of the mains, it was just too much of a scattergun approach rather than the precision we know Steve McQueen and Gillian Flynn can turn out. IMO McQueen's most disappointing movie to date.

  • @criminal238
    @criminal238 5 років тому +21

    After seeing the film I thought that it was ok, it has some great acting thanks to the amazing cast, but the story wasn't that great imo, neither was the music and the use of it. The heist and the end of the movie was the most disappointing part of it, and I also think the film tried to have too many messages.

    I just watched it. I have never seen the original TV series. I thought McQueen’s previous films were interesting, although I can’t say that I loved them. I did however really like the screenwriter Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl”. This film is a heist film with some commentary on women and politics, but it doesn’t really do anything out of the ordinary. It’s a solid well made film, but not a daring one - which is surprising giving McQueen’s work.

    This is a brilliant review. I loved this movie so much I needed to see it again immediately - and did a couple of days later.
    I do find myself irritated with people who say it was slow or had unnecessary characters and subplots. Everyone is entitled to an opinion even when it shows a lack of taste and intelligence. Lol, I know I sound rude to say that. But I don't see how you can miss just how good this movie is.

  • @ChubbyChecker182

    I enjoyed it a lot, but it was definitely a bit "odd" at times. Some comedy moments seemed just really strange, if they were meant to be comedic. And about 90% of the movie seems quite basically directed, a typical thriller, but that 10% when McQueen does something REALLY unusual really makes this movie a bit special in an odd way.
    And yet a few Truly Dumb moments too ... (The reason an important 'code' not working the first couple of times for me was daft)
    I am a big fan of Shame, and McQueens other stuff is very good too and this is not quite up there, but was very good

    I think Mark was to star struck with all these great actors, the director & writer to notice the film was no better than ok, with plot holes, and rushed & unbelievable ending, seriously, we are expected to believe they became so professional on their first heist without any practice. Critics were puzzled why no Oscars not me. 5 out of 10 from me.

  • @idlt4
    @idlt4 5 років тому +1

    Too long. You could shave 20-25 minutes just by having some of the shots go from 20 seconds to 10. It tries to cover too much ground, the sociopolitical, the sexism, the racial, the class divide, the generic crime elements, the more kitchen sink dramatic elements. By the third act I was bored and felt like I'd been in the cinema for 3 hours. Too many characters. BUT. Very entertaining for the most part. A lot of depth, a lot of thrills, great acting, mostly great writing (although structure and pace is a big problem). Worth watching and very enjoyable but not something that transcends genre boundaries like Heat did.

    WTF? Just watched this movie and left feeling it was a waist of time. With the amount of talented actors in this movie, I'd think the plot would have been better. Did M. Night Shyvamalan help Steve McQueen out with this movie (lol)?
    It took way way way too long to get to the heist. I caught myself yawning a couple of times.
    The movie was very dry with a ridiculous plot. Maybe this would have been better served if the was an HBO television series.
    This film made all the black men in the film either a ruthless killer or crooked politician.
    I was deciding if I wanted to watch this boring overated fluff or Overlord. I made tbe wring choice lol.
    I did not connect with this movie and was not believable. This heist genre vehicle was complete waist of time for me as a viewer and the actors involed.
