Did this on my Mac and was pleasantly surprised at the increase in speed. I had to 3D print a drive bracket (although one can be bought at amazon). It took me about half hour. Upgraded to Sonoma using OpenCore and the computer is nearly as good as my Mac mini M1 (with a few software exceptions). The beauty of these iMacs is that they are upgradable to some extent unlike newer macs. I also upgraded the RAM to 20Gb for pennies per GB. Hopefully this will extend the life of this iMac for another 10 years.
I am working on this since Yesterday, waiting for the ssd to arrive. 1 thing i am not so sure about is how do i get the Software back! Do i need to use opencore patcher to Download Ventura on an another usb drive? Can you help? Thanks
Great tip about not needing a bracket! I was just about to buy one on eBay but the electrical tape should do the trick hopefully. I’ve also bought a SATA Y-Splitter power cable, (for about £2.50) which also apparently sort out the fan issue without the need for thermal sensor. Thanks again. Great video.
Yes. It is great. You might be discouraged by installers (etc) from going any bigger than a 500GB SSD drive since it's "such an old machine". On the other hand, if you have many, many CDs or videos, you might consider ignoring their advice!
Thanks for this video. Great presentation! Do you know if all the ssds have the same connections as this 2011 model? Trying to figure out which ssds will work with for mine. Id like to get 2tb that’s as fast as possible to give it a fighting chance. :)
what file do i need to copy to the ssd? is it MAC OS dmg file or anything else? Are there any specific procedures to start the install on brand new drive? Do i need a recovery dick for that?
Question : I got an "old" iMAC with that "?" mark folder flashing ................but the "command + R" combination did NOT take me to recovery. Actually, nothing happens. Not even a WIFI network prompt. Could it be that the drive is just DEAD ? If i throw a brand new SSD in there, will it boot up ?? Thanks
the new drive will go in and the bios will function...it's a matter of installing an operating system...be it mac, windows, linux etc. yes I've seen this very computer running windows 10.
Hello, I'm facing a very difficult problem with my iMac 27" 2011. After replacing the motherboard, CPU (upgraded to i7 2600), SSD, RAM, and reinstalling the system, the fans are running at full speed, and the CPU is stuck at a low frequency (1.7 GHz). I don't know how to fix this, and I would be very grateful if you could help)
you put screws and bracket on the ssd so why the tape?...this is what anyone can do to any all in one pc. They are basically laptops with the same hard drive pinout and memory cards. I have an old HP and it looks no different. I've seen these macs running windows 10.
It was able to EDIT 2 streams of 100mbs 4k Video from Sony a7iii *comfortably* in Final Cut.... It will absolutely be able to play FHD Video... Hope this helps...

That’s amazing. Did you really need the bracket after watching what he did in the video above?

Did you get 20GB RAM in an iMac 2011, or was yours different?
Where can I get these iMac ? Website link

the bracket is there for signal grounding...any piece of metal that you can secure the ssd to the frame with will do.

Great video, just doing the same job for a friend!

Use mac fan control software, since you install the ssd the fan works at full speed
@@elgatopeludin194 I ordered a thermal sensor for the SSD, should help
Cant you reuse the thermal sensor thats already on the HDD?
i believe so

1 screw to the bracket didn’t feel enough. So why not? Why do you have a problem with this?
What’s your point?
will do on an older iMac I have sitting around ... and then this: ua-cam.com/video/6DUVc_TSqcY/v-deo.html
Will it play you tube in FHD? I tried it on G5 and it barely could play lowest quality
