I have a science fair project, and I will be using Drosophila. This video was very helpful, because I will be doing the experiment on my own. Thank you!
How did you make the food of drosophila, because I did with banana pulp but it was very difficult to transfer the drosophila from one bottle to another …
Respuesta del profesor: Thank you for your question. There are several medium for Drosophila, some commercial, and some that you can prepare yourself. The medium that we use in the laboratory include flour, yeast, water, agar and sugar. Also, you can add potassium sorbate, propionic acid and sodium nipagin to control fungi and bacteria. We don't use banana pulp.
The teacher answers: "Thank you for your question, but we do not use glycerin to observe the sex comb. In adult stage we just need the lens. In pupa stage we can use water to observe them better if it is necessary and also to maintain the pupa wet and avoid to damage them".
Teacher says: "Thank you for your comment. The "yellow stuff" is the food for the flies. It is composed by yeast, agar, sugar and other specific compounds to favour the growth of the flies. There are commercial preparations that can be bought if you need them."
