My dad was very good friends with John and shared many memories in Chester together. A simple man with an amazing gift. I still think about John. His final years were seriously poor for him. It makes me happy to see people still enjoy his music. Very good!
I went to school with him and he often called around to our house as he was great friends with my brother. We played together several times in the '60's and I am sad that he left us too soon.

A fantastic tribute to the big genius who was John Martyn. A man who voice was a gorgeous instrument to accompany his beautiful guitar playing. Well done!
I was 14yo in 1973. This song made me want a guitar. I got a second-hand nylon string guitar. Wanted that metal sound, didn’t know, bent the neck so badly. This brought it all back.
Watched Mr Martyn perform this at a folk concert in a hotel on the outskirts of Glasgow circa 1975 (he dropped in on his mentor Hamish Imlach whose concert it was) - 44 years before seeing you just eight miles away in the city centre with Carson, Reina & Toni - "The more things change..." Keep up the good work for the next generation.
For some people of my age this is something of an anthem. Hearing this played so well makes me think once again that despite our fine dreams, perhaps the only successful legacy we will leave is the next generation...
I first saw John Martyn in his (and my) native Glasgow just a wee bit less than 40 years ago. Apart from the man himself, of course, I think that might be the best version I've heard. And I used to do that one myself! Well done, son.
Saw John Martin at Bedford Teacher Training college. Small audience, so he got people to sit up on the stage. Magical. Josh, not only are you talented, you pick a great range of songs to cover.
Listen to the dynamics that this gentleman applies when he plays & sings. Like a pulsation within the best. He monitors his playing & singing with a rhythmic emphasis on volume that dances in & out of the song. In many of of these spaces he puts in tasteful finger picking sometimes on the off beat. This is very effective at pulling the ear in & whereby paying attention to his guitar work. Truly a brilliant musician who will travel far within his abilities & talent.
Lovely - reminds me of my best friend - sadly departed this world. He could make the guitar sing and he always reminded me of John Martyn. We'd listen to his albums - and mellow out. Long time ago now. Thanks.
John used to frequent the Scotia bar on Stockwell st in Glasgow, It will be the first place I head to for a session when these hard times are behind us, great cover mate.
This combination of respect for the material, beautiful singing, good taste, impeccable musicianship, modesty and niceness is just impossible to criticize.
Thank you, Thank you ...Thank you. I first enjoyed this fabulous song at a Michael Johnson (R.I. P.) concert in Minneapolis @1975. There is nothing else like this song. Very special. You have done well honoring Martyn and Johnson.
This "crazy fat uncle" enthusiastically seconds the Michael Johnson recommendation. Mr. Turner, if you read these comments, please do this old man a favor and check out his stuff from the mid to late 70s, soon after his split from the Chad Mitchell Trio (where performed with a then relative unknown named John Denver).
Yes. Michael Johnson's first two solo albums are a treasure trove of songs, both originals and covers like this. He was an excellent guitarist and wonderful singer with a wry sense of humor. Based in Minneapolis at the time, he'd remark in concerts in the mid-70s that he was "famous locally throughout the country". When you're stuck for your next song, Josh, take a look at There is a Breeze or For All You Mad Musicians. You are sure to find something both challenging and engaging.
So there you are, singing one of the folk world greats,John Martin..sweet song, amongst the Crocus and giving me some much needed joy..Thank you from my heart ♥️🇨🇦
A wonderful and faithful version of a superb track, just superb. I'm a live sound engineer and bassist, and huge fan of John Martyn. I was lucky enough to work with Danny Thompson a few years ago, when I mentioned I loved his work with John Martyn he played the intro to Solid Air for me to get the sound on his bass, I was absolutely blown away! A lovely guy and an absolute legend of a musician, what a privilege it was to work with someone who played on some of my favourite music!
I feel the same emotion as when I discovered the live version (1981) by Michael Hedges. I used to think it was the best cover in the Universe but now I doubt it. Josh, there are now two of you sharing the medal of my eternal love.
I met a girl in highschool who introduced me. Fell in love with his live echoplex stuff as well as his untouched acoustic performances. "Make no mistake" live with Danny Thompson is a fun challenge to play and sing. Great playing. He would have been proud.
Been watching you since "wagon wheel" and "black lightning 1952" and all I want to say is Josh, you are doing it! Your youtube channel and your career are really taking off. You have worked so hard and I just want you to know that you are incredible and I look forward to watching your continued rise.
Wow Josh, I'm so glad you finally got to listen to some John Martyn, he was very special indeed, he was a great friend of Nick Drake, and a much better guitarist than he was given credit for, and I'll admit it, I was one of those nagging you to check him out, I hope you will listen to plenty more of John's work he wrote some truely beautiful songs.
