    I threw my callsign out yesterday a few times but it was insane. It didn't help that the OP said 5 to 10 up. It was a s show, I gave up.

      It's easier than you believe. And when they run split, it gives you more of a chance to get the contact than if they were all stacked on one frequency because many of the people calling are all spread out and not concentrated in one spot.

    Leave it to the CQ operator to say he is working split. Otherwise, those complaining on the CQ freq are causing just as mich interference and chaos.

    nobody on 30 meters had any problems figuring out what's split and how to use it last night working tx5s. it's only the phone ops who're not too bright. I wonder why that is...

      You gotta remember it was 10 meter in the tech window of the band. I just worked TX5S on 20 meters SSB. First call in the morning.

      @@K6UDAI listened to the mayhem most of the day, the callsign formats of the lids suggested extra class in many cases - those not using split (perhaps no code extra) so I'm not sure how much it being tech portion of 10m mattered.

    I still have no idea what "split" does, but probably because I don't understand literally anything else about you're doing or talking about. I assume this is ham radio? My only experience with this kind of radio is from about 15-20 years ago when my dad had a cb radio he liked to mess around with. Are they the same thing? I have no idea. lol

      Yep. It’s ham radio. CB is part of one frequency band of ham radio. Not exactly the same but like bumpin’ uglys with your 2nd cousin. You’re doin’ it, but deep down it feels dirty.

    Gotta love the band police - ruining it for everyone.

      it takes skills to be an effective band police too without interfering with the dx station.
      if done properly it can be helpful.

    • @ske1eter
      @ske1eter 5 місяців тому

      I disagree. When everyone is trying to get a rare DX station, one doesn't need people getting in the air just because they see the special spot on their cluster. They tune to the frequency and start calling. Not even paying attention when the operator says '5 to 10 up.'

    As a rooky ham, what are you talking about ?

    • @K6UDA
      @K6UDA  5 місяців тому

      On an HF radio and most modern HTs for that matter there are two VFOs. The frequency banks. On the hf radios you can split them to listen on one vfo and talk on the other.

    I disagree regarding the guys calling out to the clowns that a station is running split. I've not heard them as durogatory as you but too many people don't listen these days. They turn on the radio because they see a spot on a cluster and just start calling. They need to learn a little bit. There is very little learning now, only memorization for the test, since the code is gone thus the poor operating habits.

    • @K6UDA
      @K6UDA  5 місяців тому

      +@ske1eter yes, I get it. It’s frustrating. But honestly it was mostly occurring on 10 meters within the sliver of the band open to techs. Some of the insults were kind of embarrassing to listen too.

      The guys telling people they are running split never ID. It’s bad form.

      I don't think code is any kind of differentiating factor. It may contribute in some sense but overall what I think is missing is the ham tests focus so much on regs, electronics, bands, propagation etc, they totally leave out anything regarding how to use a freaking radio. I suppose this is where having an elmer or something comes in but in today's world where everything is online instead of the old club days, it seems that radio operations is hugely neglected. YT has plenty of materials for this but people lose the interactive QA aspect that is present when with someone side by side. When covid hit many clubs essentially shutdown or went online and newbies are not as well connected as a result.
