as a student the hardest thing to be sustainable in is cleaning supplies because it's something that I share with my roommates. When it's my turn to buy something I go for the most sustainable option I can find but it's hard to talk with others about things that you're passionate about when they don't seem to grasp the reality of the problem.
Maybe you can offer to buy it the majority of the time? Or buy a bulk item that will last longer, and this won’t need to be replaced by them as frequently?
Buy the total amount of cleaning supplies and split the bill
I find that with toilet paper. I get the most sustainable and offer to be the one paying for the toilet paper, but my flatmate strongly dislikes the one I buy and buys a different brand.
BLUELAND! Just save the bottles you do have and buy the tabs to refill the bottles.
I support the bulk option (biggest packaging or refillable) or using baking soda for cleaning. It works well and is kinder for the environment, should be cheaper too?
Had no idea about Staples having recycling systems for writing utensils!
Really, I didnt know this but really cool
I graduated from UTSA! This was so cool to see not only you helping a student, but also ways in which she is advocating for change at the university. This video made my day!
I absolutely love that you have started a scholarship. I already graduated but I know how much even just $100 can make a difference in the life of a college student
Emily is doing a fantastic job at sustainable living in campus! Thank you Shelbi for supporting her 😊
I’m currently using forest on my cell phone because I’m super easily distracted today! Love forest. And Ecosia is super helpful and I love that it gives back and plants trees!!
as a college freshman, i super appreciate this video!! it’s hard to find ways to cut down on waste when you’re low on funds but these tips are very very helpful! every effort matters!
thank you for making this, college is definitely a hard place to try zero waste!
Great video! I’m not in college anymore but I just moved into an apartment and I think these tips are helpful. I went to a huge university (50k+ students) so of course things weren’t perfect, but we did have compost in every dining hall.
Since you're in San Antonio, it'd be sooooo cool to see a similar video for military bases. Like go with a military member or spouse to the commissary and find zero waste alternatives. And talk about sustainable living on base. As someone who lives on a military base, it can be hard.
Love this idea! Military bases can be very close knit communities, so I’m sure seeing one of their fellow people on UA-cam can inspire people all over the base to do better.
I agree, great idea.
Omg Ive been looking for a way to do smaller amounts of popcorn. That's so awesome that you can do it in the Stasher bag!
This is perfect! I live at home now but will be moving into a dorm next year. I really needed this
DO YOUR BEST AND ADVOCATE FOR THE REST
I think I might make this my new outro!!
OMG I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT YOUR SCHOLARSHIP! Congratulations!! I'm hoping to become a carbon-neutral architect so I'm definitely going to apply soon
As a new college student this was the perfect video!!
Too Good to Go reached the US :) the app is from my country and we have enjoyed in for a few years. It is super popular and something everyone enjoys
Loved this video! I used to use the Microsoft tablet for notes too (and doubled as my laptop for school) which saved so much paper. There are usually Facebook groups dedicated to used textbooks for your specific school, I got some books second hand through there.
Okay, definitely willing to be part of this series when I move in the next year for my PhD. And so so so happy for you and your scholarship! That’s incredible! NGL, I was kinda hoping to see if a Trinity student would be featured cause that’s my alma matter. 😆 still love seeing other people in SA interested in sustainability.
So excited for you about the scholarship! I know you’ve been wanting to do that for awhile!
Girl that popcorn thing is awesome! You should do some cheap easy zero waste snacks and meals as a video!!
seeing this kinda shocks me. I'm from germany and almost everyone here sorts their trash by paper, compost, packaging and other stuff. so we all have 4 bins that get picked up from garbage collection.
for taking notes i use old sheets given out from teachers from highschool or paper my dad brings from work which is printed on one side but wouldnt be used anymore and thrown away.
I remember traveling to Germany in the early 90s and being so inspired by the recycling systems there! Germany has been ahead of most other countries for a while.
Wow! I wish I had learned more when I was a student since there were initiatives in place about being more sustainable at my college! It’s just never on the forefront of anyone’s minds/you wouldn’t know it was there unless you looked for it!
And I appreciate you letting your subscribers know about the DC March this September! I live close to DC and actually lived there for years so it’s really cool to finally rally together after being more apprehensive due to COVID!
Thanks for the heads up about the forest app! I use my phones timer all the time to help me focus and now I can plant trees while doing so🙂
omg UTSA 😭 seeing my old campus in one of your videos has me SHOOK. Birds up fellow Roadrunners 🤙🏽
I’m so excited that this series is back! I’m glad, though, that you waited until it was safe 😊
AND YOUR SCHOLARSHIP IS SO EXCITING! CONGRATULATIONS!!
Ah! What a fun video. Love how passionate your uploads are!
I would love to hear your thoughts about butcher box! I know you are plant based and I am also trying to be mostly plant based. However I do still eat meat as the minority in my diet and I’ve decided to go with butcher box as it seems the best option for from what I can tell. But as you’re more an expert than I’ll ever be I would really appreciate your thoughts or recommendations for those of us who do eat meat! (Also if you’ve discussed this before someone please reference me to it ☺️☺️)
Such a great video! Congrats to you on launching your scholarship and congrats to Emily on her fellowship!
This was awesome! Love the “Do your best and advocate for the rest”!!🥰
Wow, it's amazing that you are able to start this scholarship, congrats!
I know it's still too early, but will you make a video about the ideas/visions of the students receiving it? I bet that'd be very interesting and inspiring :)
Thanks for this video! I’m having to start college applications now and have been trying to collect stuff from family members like dishes and appliances for if I dorm and move out of my childhood home. Thanks for the tips
I didn’t know this was a series. I like it. Definitely cool to see how other people are being zero waste with that they got
This is soooo helpful~ Thank you so much for creating these practical vids!
I know people like to push buying the bamboo utensils but honestly you can just carry around some silverware with you. Bamboo is more sustainable yes, but if you just use the silverware you already have in your home or you bought from a thrift store and carried it in a cloth roll up it would be cheaper and you don't have to consume anything new.
This is such a great video !!! Good job Emily on the compost !
GREAT VIDEO! Informative! Love love love! Can't wait to see the next episode. You are doing so much good ❤️🥰😁
I've been looking for a video like this for so long and it popped up at just the right time, thank you Shelby!
perfect timing! i’m moving to uni next week and i was really stressing about staying sustainable
I didn't know you could make popcorn in a stasher bag. I will try it today! I'm planning on moving into a tiny apartment with my dog next year so I would love to see someone like that in the series.
This series is so nice! Keep up the great work Shelbi :)
Wow, the indoor garden is so awesome! Thank you, Shelbi. You have taught me everything I know about sustainability.
Thank you, this is so helpful! Can be used by so many people, thank you Shelbi!
So happy you finally achieved the goal of your scholarship! Yay!
Something I found so difficult as a student is that I had to move around so much. Each place required me to buy different appliances, sometimes my bed would be too big for the room I was renting so I’d have to get a smaller one. Soooo frustrating!
Hooray for the return of the Zero Waste Transformation Series! Love the compassionate approach without judgment. Ty!
We are moving off grid into a canvas tent this month. One major influence to this was sustainability but it brings about a whole new batch of sustainability struggles with lower income, less services ect. I would absolutely love to be part of this series. I have applied at the link too but wanted to comment here as well. We are in AZ, fully vaccinated ;).
I’m so proud of you for finally being able to start your scholarship 😭 I feel like I’ve grown so much with you. Thank you for everything Shelbi 🤍🤍🤍
It’s nice to see Shelby finally do some content about students. And it’s nice to see i’m not the only student still wearing chacos
Congrats about the scholarship! I'm sure many people will be grateful.
This is awesome!!! Love this series especially since it's a great education tool for many other students or anyone whose trying to become more sustainable.
Senior high student here this was very helpful🥰
Same
I’m already graduated and out of college but some of this tips were even helpful to me. The microwave popcorn in a stasher bag is a game changer! And how did I not realize until now that you can just purchase fruit without putting it in a bag if you forget your reusable produce bags?! Thanks for making this video!
yay! I've been waiting for this video!!! this is my first year in an apartment as a college student and I've been trying to get our living space and consumption to be more eco-friendly! we've gotten almost everything we can from thrift stores and I'm about to make my first purchase from whogivesacrap! Thank you for all you do for us shelbie!
I absolutely LOVE my rocketbook. They are pretty expensive off the bat but so worth it for me
Yay! I’m so excited for this series 🤩
Such a great idea for a video! Really enjoyed this sort of real world audit of someone's life. It gave me a lot of ideas for myself, especially the stasher popcorn trick...like, are you kidding me!?! 💛🎉
Love this video great ideas. In respect of receipts I have noticed that in San Antonio a lot of local shopping stores like marshals and tjmaxx will actually give you an option to print your receipt or email it to you. I will stop taking physical receipts now that I know one can't recycle them properly. And my mom now asks me if this is recyclable since I would show her all the time the numbers on the bottom and why certain things can be washed and put in recycle bin. She makes me so proud. :D
i attend western washington university and luckily we have a really decent composting program that I utilized when i was a freshman ON CAMPUS! i couldnt believe it. they just had a little plastic bucket bin thing with a lid, lined with biodegradable bags, with extra bags in the lounge. then we just take it out to the compost bin and it goes to our on-site farm!! our farm (called the outback) regularly hosts pantry days where we come and get produce. my old neighbor worked at the farm and would always drop off boxes for me!! its amazing. there are a few locations on campus in the dining halls and the main square that also have compost bins. AND on campus every little coffee shop and most of the other food places have compostable silverware, and plant cups. and they give you a punch card and if you use your own cup 10 times you get a free coffee!!! so many great ideas. love how much they help on my zero waste journey! it can happen!!! although difficult for sure. advocate!
Shelby I Love You!! You are so amazing, I am so happy I found this channel years ago. Seeing how you use your success from UA-cam to spread awareness to the people is so inspiring. You are a true Enviornmental Warrior!
I thought of a potential future idea for your channel, where you could start going to restaurants and helping them run their buisnesses more sustainably!
Thank you for being your beautiful, wonderful self. 🥰❤
I wish I had a Shelbi when I was in college! This was an awesome episode!
This is really cool Shelbi! :D
I took some time out of school duribg covid but so happy for and interested in the scholarship when i return!
This is really fun and educative.💚
im transferring to utsa (downtown campus) this spring, and its been pretty stressful to think how id keep up my environmentally friendly journey in a city and space im clueless about, especially when youre still trying to remain on a budget. i really look up to you on furthering my journey, so i couldnt thank you enough for videos like this where you share and give insight to others on how to keep the mission going.
also, shoutout to emily; keep it up, sis((:
in finland our student housing offers so much recycling options! we have bins for cartons, paper, glass, metal, biowaste, plalstic and one for everything else. I also use the opportunity to return used batteries, light bulbs and so on to the original store. the only bummer is that I don't have many bins to sort them out but ill try to figure out a space to do so
So helpful as a student myself! Thanks Shelby!
We have a bio digester in my town so you can throw a lot of food waste in your green waste and I’ve seen a lot of apartments utilizing a green waste bin! I’m sure it was started by the tenants and I just think that’s so cool
SUCH A GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO 🙌🏼 Thank you!!!
I see her putting the blanket on the bed without washing it first. Even organic and such the idea of how many people and things have touched that even before it gets to the store, I always wash clothes and bedding before using them, even 2nd hand stuff. And I wish we had a bulk food section at our store like she does. We had one 20 yrs ago but kids used it as a free for all snack area so it got pulled.
I still cant get over the fact she didnt wash it!!!
Great video, as alway. Thanks for being so real 💚
Loved the app recommendations! Unfortunately not all of them are that big in my own country but I’ll defined be checking them all out 💛
This video came out at a great time for me, just moved into my college dorm. Thank you so much for all your inspiring work !
I remember the book we had to read before freshman year at Ohio State in 2010 was No Impact Man, and it came with "No Impact Week" at some point that October. It was a rough week for sure. Your best bet was to just eat in the dining hall and shower in lukewarm water as fast as humanly possible. I even carried a plate around with me in my drawstring bag, which drew some interesting stares.
Most of our homework was online, but I remember for physics and chemistry our text books were workbooks and we had to have paper lab notebooks. I hope that that has changed in the last decade so data can be recorded electronically.
I would strongly recommend flower sack towels for a pappertowel substitute. Amazon has some great deals and so does wall mart.
Love this series! 👏
The scholarship opportunity is amazing! Thank you from students everywhere
I just moved into my dorms and pretty much the pillows, comforter, kitchen utensils and plates and pans and stuff that I have is all secondhand either from family or thrift shops.
Great video... thank you so much for sharing💚☘
this video was absolutely wonderful! Thank you!!
Thank you Shelbi!!
I love the popcorn in a Sasher bag hack! I totally want to try it out, so I finally ordered a Stasher bag off of Mercari. I bet it will be really good with Flavocal powder!
NO WAY, you can make the popcorn in a stashed bag?!?! That just made my freakin day
I loved this episode!
I appreciated this video. I, too, hate the term “zero waste” and the anxiety it causes.
What’s also hard right now is the dining halls give me every meal in wrapped portions in a foam take out containers. There isn’t another option because that’s their policy during COVID 19, I guess I could just choose not to eat there but that’s where my meal plan is. Ugh so hard.
Just ordered a zero waste planner from Wisdom Supply Co! They have other low waste school supplies as well.
ITS LIKE YOU READ MY MIND THANK YOU
Shelby official request on your journey about how you created your scholarship, because it's one of my bucket list dreams to create a scholarship!
Congrats on the scholarship!!!!
My campus put out bins specifically for snack wrappers! Advocate at your campus for them!
I love this type of videos 😍😍😍
Omg peep the Olympic National Park map on the wall @19:42 - signed a park ranger that uses this map hundreds of times per day. Hope you enjoyed the park!! 😂
I love Ecosia! I use it as a search engine on my phone and laptop. I have the Too Good to Go app but it's not available in my area yet which I hope changes at some point.
My daughter just moved to her first apartment just off campus at UCdavis Davis California. she purchased every thing she could at thrift stores but her room mate has to have everything new from big box stores ect. she is a little frustrated that she is trying to be eco friendly but this room mate is no where near that. She feels she is not still making a difference?
as someone who started off college as the type of person as your daughter’s roommate, I promise she’s making a difference! my roommate loved thrifting things and never pressured me into it, but over time my roommate’s personality and her genuinely doing the things she values encouraged me to give it a try, and now I love secondhand, thrifting, low waste swaps, etc. Your daughter just has to keep living by her values and others will definitely notice and join in at their own pace :)
Great music 🎶 and details!
That’s the biggest dorm I’ve ever seen! Haha but really, loving this series. Great work!
haha I know I was blown away, I went to Boston University and our dorms were cinderblock 10x10 rooms with vinyl twin beds and 80s oak built-ins that were shared by two people. multiple rooms? community kitchens? lol nope.
Have you done a video in depth about what happens at recycling plant? I would love to share with my friends and family that just don’t get why you can’t recycle all plastics
What kind of bag did you use to make the microwave popcorn? I love it
*have to say*
Your hair looks gorgeous!
If she cant find snacks in bulk (sprouts, winco) she can try to see if there is a Terracycle drop off nearby, or see if the campus can get one in the dining area. Subaru car dealers have them on site
YESSSS! This is such a good idea! Maybe even get RA's to help get them into the dorms. Love this, I'll tell her about this idea.
