I must disagree with your last sentence. I don't think the success of the short movie led to the full series as it wasn't a pilot pitching an idea. Both short films were promotional materials for the on-going manga. The full series was going to happen anyways as the manga was quite popular at the time and in order to boost tankobon sales.

I still remembered some of the upcoming lines and exactly how they were voiced. Azumanga Daioh was one of the first anime that I watched in Japanese where I significantly started to pick up on the language. I was in 6th... maybe 7th grade when I left this comment? Since this comment, I did foreign exchange in Japan in high school, moved to Japan for university, graduated, and am now a professional Japanese translator who translates anime and AAA studio games! Seeing middle school me's comment here and watching this is so nostalgic! And yes, 15 years later, Yukari-sensei still does exactly what I would do. :) I also just remembered I still quote her Japanese pronounciation of "adios" from an episode all the time. In middle school, Yukari-sensei was the one I identified with the most out of the Azumanga cast due to her insanity, and now as an even more insane adult who briefly worked as an English teacher in Japan... I like this chiyo voice better, she sounds realistically kid-like unlike the really squeaky high pitched they have in the anime (nothing is wrong with it tho)
