    Petersburg consistently has ranked in the top three in per capita homicides since at least 2013, medical examiner data show. The city was ranked first in three of the past six years. The city endured 77 killings over that period. By contrast, neighboring Chesterfield County, which has 10 times more people, had five homicides last year with a per capita homicide rate of 1.5 killings per 100,000 people, according to the medical examiner’s office. The county ranked 74th out of 82 localities that recorded at least one killing.

      @@dkd8747that logic is wrong to the fullest 😂 it got nothing to do with the size. The reason Petersburg look worse than Richmond because one Gentrification they trynna fox up the city while kicking out long time residents. Two it’s the capital of the state. Three VCU basically runs that city. Petersburg just poor they don’t give af about regardless of the size. Hopewell is smaller than Petersburg yet looks better than Petersburg.

It was the spot to be back in the day. We had the homes, apartments, the clubs, shopping, 2 movie theaters, restaurants, employment, Brown & Williamson tobacco & Central State Hospital were the biggest employers here back in those days….I miss the old Petersburg…It’s ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like it once was AT ALL…I’m preparing to move away from here. When the tobacco company here at that time back in I believe was 1982 Brown & Williamson moved to Georgia & in 1988 or 89 the mayor at that time voted against the new mall that’s now in Colonial Heights Va which is Southpark Mall. From what I remember my parents talking about. I was 14 & remember that when Southpark opened…the department stores & restaurants starting leaving.

    I grew up on that street that you just passed near the beginning of the video. It used to be WAY worst 20 years ago and there was drug dealers up on the corner always and in front of Shortts, People's and the other local food shops. You can say hi to most people now and they'll either smile and wave back or say hi to you back. I wouldn't call current Petersburg dangerous and most of the streets that you traveled on aren't really bad at all. Infact, I often take the route that you went up towards the end of the video when coming back home when catching the Walnut Hill bus.
    Now in terms of Petersburg being upkept, yeah that's another story. Lots of folks have been coming to Peterbsurg and renovating, but plenty of places are still run down. But I feel safer in Petersburg as someone who lived here for 30 years, than I do in Richmond and a few other towns

    Looks post-apocalyptic! We have a few neglected areas, but nothing like this. We have good areas and bad areas, but not both together! We don't have abandoned houses mixed with normal lived-in houses. For us, it's not common to see wreaked abandoned houses overall, and when we do, it'll be the entire street. The idea of lived in houses and abandoned collapsed houses all peppered together, looks bizarre to us.
    But, you have more space so maybe things are more stretched out than they look. Plus, you have wooden houses. All the houses here are sold brick, so cost probably comes in to it as well. I'm guessing it costs less to construct a wooden house vs a brick built house?

    Not bad. Peterburg’s a real place. Peterburg has real people out and about. Peterburg has active, vibrant street life. Peterburg is allowing change and improvement to happen organically instead of completely leveling its entire history, architecture, and street culture with urban renewal’s wrecking ball and entirely hollowing out its city. Norfolk is entirely gone. Peterburg has a chance. Peterburg still has character. Move to Peterburg.

    Really sad what happened to my hometown. I can say that this was a great place to grow up. My mothers house was in the middle of the video. Everyone lived in somewhat harmony and there were only a few neighborhood skirmishes. Not the random killings you see now. Besides someone mentioning the tobacco factory closing and the mall not being built, another drain on the city was young people leaving and never coming back - myself included. Not enough career or economic opportunities. Once the older generations that were the backbone of the city began dying, there was no talent or families to replace them. Even most of the people that work in the city now (ie the teachers, policemen, etc) live in the neighboring counties (Dinwiddie, Chesterfield, Prince George) which are safer and have grown rapidly with nicer housing. The lack of replenished population is what have lead to all the dilapidated housing in the video. I could continue but it’s kind of sad to keep writing.

    April 3, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln awoke at City Point to the news that Petersburg had fallen. Lincoln stopped at the abandoned Confederate fortifications along the Dimmock Line. Here Lincoln climbed the parapet of Fort Mahone. Lincoln’s face had “settled into its old lines of sadness” over the war’s enormous cost in human lives and suffering. Seems like people are still suffering today.

      A good rule of thumb is, wherever its a overwhelming majority of blacks living in a single area, that area is going to be high in crime. The parts of Detroit that are being cleaned up are by white investors and this is looked down upon by both blacks and Democrats as gentrification and seen as racism when these areas are cleaned up.

    • @Ноук
      @Ноук Рік тому

      @@Danlovestrivium Among the black population there is no propaganda what "gangster romance" will lead to, young people cannot find themselves and go to rob and kill. In cities, sections are needed on a state basis: Music, sports, theater circles, etc.
      I think that these districts should not be feared, but it is worth ramming in and improving the situation, it is necessary to separate young people from former prisoners. Literally in 5-6 years of active work with districts, it is possible to radically change the position of these people, districts, and motivate them to work on themselves.
      The black citizens of America are very talented, I look at ordinary people from the ghetto from the author’s video, how a love couple in the ghetto dances not to music for bandits, there is love and right thoughts in people.
      It is necessary to correctly bring this out of the streets, through dialogue, through the eradication of elements that recruit people and their souls in a dirty direction.
      these are banal thoughts, but there is no other way.

    I have lived in Petersburg for 20 years and this is not a true representation of the city. Petersburg is not a dangerous city. What is shown in this video is only a few streets or blocks of Petersburg. I dislike videos that only give one side of the story. Every city in the United States has areas like this. Come on people, let's start being positive and promoting love, peace, happiness and respect. I love my city of Petersburg.

      I went driving around looking for houses for sale there are sections of the town that seem ok but I couldn't help but notice how many abandoned houses and businesses is saw in a 5 mile stretch plus the two abandoned schools which is foreign to me and most army post have not great towns next to them but Petersburg by far seemed the most run down I would even put barstow above it and Barstow is just a pit stop to vagas i think that some investment into the city could change how some feel here at gregg adams about Petersburg multiple people have said it's not safe and I got the sense while driving around I wasn't welcome there

    I think that the spaces that Charlie Bo offers us are the right location for this little memory of mine dedicated to Martin Luther King.
    The fact that everyone has forgotten it, reading the comments, is significant for a further interpretation of the United States.

      MLK isn't really revered in the black communities anymore. MLK is usually just used for white people to go through the motions of pretending they care by bringing up his words or making new statues or roads named in his honor. But blacks today don't follow the words of MLK and aren't really interested in any of his teachings.

      Petersburg look like this about anywhere you go, you gotta be talking like colonial heights if it in Petersburg bc its a sundown town they dont want the blacks over there
      Otherwise the nice houses gonna be in hopewell chesterfield and prince George area

    • @Apee924
      @Apee924 Рік тому

      @@blackneji1701 I think you are are talking about one part of Petersburg. The Petersburg High School is right beside a golf ⛳ course and the Petersburg Country Club is surrounded by newer subdivisions. So how could a whole city be so called hood with things such as these . They didn't show the Old Town they didn't show any other parts but the parts that get views. Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and Chester are the same you have your good parts and bad like every city. Petersburg, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, and Prince George are intertwined.
      So you can live in any one of those cities and counties and have a Petersburg address. None of those were shown in the video. You can do a Zillow look up and see the many different parts of Petersburg. Petersburg is a really small town with less than 40k residents but is always compared to cities with 100k or more residents. What is being shown in the video is a few streets of the city . Do your own research people, with any city you have good and bad parts but for some reasons people love to highlight the negative. Get out and travel and you will see people are very selective with what they show you.
