@@TheKiltedYaksman1 Yeah this too, and it feels like one of their biggest achievements was ganking PhysX from somebody else. But anyway yeah to me this is what clearly distinguished them from being mere price gougers to also being kind of shitbags about it who don't even have product to offer, but just memes. Like if they had a real good piece of hardware and actually cared about making good hardware still, they'd have just let it market itself by performance. But instead, they chose what really they did back in Pascal era even, which is to routinely come up with some kind of proprietary bullcrap that hits your performance hard but then hits anyone else way harder, like HairWorks. Like wtf, so your proprietary gimmick is why we're supposed to like Pascal? They did because it performed well enough. So I think that they never changed since their straight up lying about GTX 970 "4"gb and HairWorks, only now they're trying to shackle that to a $1500 card to then bully tech reviewers and not even smaller more indie ones but major channels just because not many people give any fucks about the next HairWorks feature. Which can be neat on its own, but every neat thing they do is two steps back thanks to their nonstop bullcrap, and the insane price creep they've been doing for ages now, all of which we really only tolerated because AMD kinda sucked for the longest while, basically until about RDNA and even then they had such a disastrous launch 5700XT/5600XT which were great value and fantastic performers crippled by shitty zeroday drivers for long enough that nVidia maintained the market share. But then we get 2020 aaaand...a minor plague happens. Also we had a pandemic, but yeah a plague of scalping and miners, so it got fucked in that sense despite RDNA2 being a Zen2 tier moment for once in a decade. And that's where nVidia fails and why they're continuing to be failing, because WHAT WE AS GAMERS CARE ABOUT IS PERFORMANCE. I don't give a fuck about shadowplay. I want a performant card at a SANE price, and the fact they've been moving on to this Apple cultist like "mindshare" while shoving 600w+ down the pipe is a direct signal to me that they've already entered Fermi territory.
See that's where you're wrong everybody can ignore a Linus. He's misrepresenting what's happened. Hardware unboxed doesn't want to review the full product. They only want to review a specific application of the product and nothing else. As such Nvidia remove them from being able to get free samples. Nothing more nothing less there is nothing unfair about it. There are hundreds of reviewers who do not get anything for free. If the guy is not going to review the entire product, then they don't deserve to get free samples.
@@LainK1978 The exact opposite is what happened. Nvidia wants reviewers to push raytracing over any other features. And if you're going to bat for Nvidia after the shit that's come out about them, I *hope* you're getting paid for it.

“Do not bite the hand that feeds.” Nvidia is now targeting the people giving them free publicity, and showing people why they should or should not purchase products... It’s even worse that they’re ignoring, and to a point silence those that point out the flaws.
Thank you Linus for fighting BS. And by the way, as a VR gamer, I'm very interested in rasterization to push as much FPS as possible to my headset and RTX decreases that number, so Hardware Unboxed's take on this is relevant to me.
If Nvidia thinks they could buy biased reviews by giving a free card, I applaud reviewers for telling Nvidia to shove it. I have high respect for tech reviewers holding their ground. If Nvidia's products don't get reviewed, hopefully that will translate to less sales. Gotta hurt them in wallet to straighten these companies out.
And that's why I trust LTT... Because you can tell for Linus it's a personal attack against his most inner moral and believes to have a company affect actual media coverage (outside of disclosed sponsorships)
Man. I saw this when it came out. This has to be one of the greatest taking to task tech podcasts I’ve ever witnessed. No quarter. And Luke nodding along, and occasionally having to hide his face when Linus addresses certain segments to specific qualities of individuals, it just makes it even better.

Angry Linus is very different, but definitely gets the point across. This inside-the-industry insight is really important, because otherwise some of the veiled nuance would have gone over my head
I think Hardware Unboxed was low hanging fruit. NVIDIA tired it on with a smaller YouToober and if they had got away with it; moved up the food chain. Kudos for the reviewers working together against the bully and ensuring "we" the gamers continue to receive unbiased reviews.
Every game being rasterized would warrant a focus on rasterization, if that part is ever cut back we could see stagnation or degradation in quality for our older games. It's important to know before you go into bonuses like RTX and DLSS.
So basically Nvidia said "suck us off because of a feature most of the people own that the cards don't even use because it makes most games barely playable at the settings you can notice it at."

Last line about editorial was basically them saying to say the right things or you will never get the new cards from us on release day again. Essentially attempting to control the media.
What's worse is that Hardware Unboxed did a dedicated video about raytracing performance and DLSS just a few days after the review. Hell, even in the review, Steve mentioned that the video was coming.
2 years later and RTX is still a novelty that looks great but comes with a horrific performance cost. Many many many games still don't have it. Don't get me wrong I love RTX and use Nvidia but it needs optimization. Steve was 100 percent spot on.

Every time something like this come up I just wanna ask : How? How in the year 2020 do we have PR managers that don‘t understand how the Internet works? What were they expecting?
They expected it to go public. Let´s be real, they wanted it to go public. At least among the tech youtubers. But probably customers too. You see it clearly in the maketing description of the product which you just DO NOT put in if you write to someone who is knowledgeable about those things, and not with this message. Worse is that they probably thought they had us (the public/customers) more under control. That´s the audacity.
Watching this again two years later is wild. In the US or in Canada, if you are solely using a product to market it, you have to disclose the fact that it is a sponsored advertisement. This is not what hardware reviewers do. They are meant to review the product. It is Nvidia's job to market the product. What they are effectively doing is side stepping the law and forcing hardware reviewers to market their products without being considered advertisting.
Not to mention we now have the hindsight to see how poorly raytracing has advanced, how flat its fallen despite the untold millions of $$$ they pumped into game companies to use it. To this day, look how scaled-back all successful RTX implementations are - they can only use it for certain types of lighting, in combination with traditional shading, in tiny portions of scenes. It's all a huge lie to try to get the masses to see Nvidia as Gods, but it's just making them look more and more disconnected and psycho Nvidia are desperate to uphold the veil that they are outright dominant, but we only have to look at the increasing delays between card releases, the stagnant performances per dollar across new generations to see they're beginning to get stuck. Their revenue is drying up bit-by-bit, accelerated by the current economic crisis, and its only a matter of time before they get overtaken.
Everytime I watch this, it gets better and better. Linus crushed this. After 15 years supporting team green, and not a fan boy at any point, I just purchased my first shiny red object! How fitting.
I like how Linus also says, I know Brian, and he wouldn't say this, and he deserves a chance to respond. Real integrity. Also subbed Hardware Unboxed out of spite.
Except, of course, he _did_ say that. He sent out a not-pology, then later sent out an actual apology. Clearly Linus doesn't know the guy as well as he thinks. Probably because Linus has had a strong pro-nVidia bias for years.

The only thing I'm surprised by is that you're surprised. After years of corporate abuses, blacklisting and outright lies, it is actually depressing how unsurprising and utterly predictable this behaviour is, whether it's EA, Ubisoft, Activision or nVidia. What's absolutely AMAZING is how nVidia is doing AMDs PR work for them. That is mind boggling.
One reason I love the tech industry is not only the passion for products - but additionally it’s seeing folks like Linus defending “his competitors” that’s very noble of him and I feel his frustration. IMO: this needs to be addressed through the UA-cam community, I am very disappointed to see this. Thank you Linus.
One thing I love about tech industry is that they see competitors as allies. I've bought my pc and it's heartwarming seeing smaller pc shops helping each other out to get me my pc in perfect condition.

Hardware Unboxed is such a great channel, they have made a lot of videos about the 5700XT, which I wanted to buy, and dove into the different models and temps and so on. Because of these videos I was able to buy the card that doesn't have a flawed cooling system and gives me the best performance. I am so thankful that they cared about me, the consumer, that much, that they individually tested all these cards and compared them to each other.

Thank you for using your platform to speak out for all of us who are never listened to by the big companies. I am happy i can support a creator who just wants things to be done right and fairly.
This pathetic lashing out is just what happen when companies feel pressure from competition. It reminds me of Gibson guitars with their "play authentic" fiasco from a year or so ago.
If Intel stops sending products to people who don't praise them then no one will know about the next Intel launch because everyone knows AMD will be better overall.
The common thought process on Intel vs AMD is simple. If your strictly for gaming, go Intel. If you use it for literally anything else, or even while gaming. Go AMD. It's been that way for a couple of years now. The roles will change in the future though, think Intel know's that. This isn't the first time they have been in that position. "I'm extremely upset." That's Canadian speak for "I'm fucking infuriated at this fucking bullshit." So that email was just basically "You're not advertising the thing we want you to so we're done giving you free stuff." I wonder if Nvidia realizes that 99.99% of the games that 99.99% of gamers play do NOT support ray tracing. I have a full 1 TB SSD of games, none of which use RT. RT may be the future of gaming but that future is still 5-10 years off. I mean, we haven't even gotten everyone to acknowledge the massive benefit of SSDs over HDDs and its been over 10 years since SSDs started getting good. It also really shows that Linus is Canadian when he, the owner of a company that employs 80 people and whose UA-cam channel makes between 300k and 4.8 million a year by itself, apologizes for not having the time to keep up with every tech UA-camr out there.
I'm sad I was looking forward to getting a 3000 series card at some point when they are available. Probably not anymore unfortunately. They would have to not only right their wrongs, but also change their ways completely.
I mean, use it anyway? What is with all you chodes farming for self righteous points over this? It doesn't make their product suddenly terrible. The logic gap is almost hilarious at this point.
Dude, look, I agree that what Nvidia was bad and they definitely deserve the backlash that they are getting. But why are you letting this affect your purchase? If you're happy with the performance that the card gives, then how does this affect that performance? Nvidia definitely did a scummy thing and I am not their fanboy but, this whole fiasco doesn't impact your performance. As a wise man once said - "Buy the product, not the brand."
@@divyavyas9003 That's true but if using the product makes you ethically disgusted would you enjoy using it? Hardware unboxed got thrown under the bus and if you as a customer buy their product you're in one way or another being supportive about it.

I would like to think Linus is in fact a force to be reckoned with in the tech media world. I can only imagine what would happen if Nvidia or Intel tried to cut LMG off, a literal shitstorm probably.

@@frandurrieu6477 If Linus would, rightfully, smash a big company they'd actually feel it in their wallets in the end due to the backlash. So I'd agree, I think he's pretty influencial right now.
It's a crying shame that nobody had that kind of exposure and influence back in 98-00 when nVidia used some *shady* fucking tricks to bulldoze 3dfx out of business.
What’s nice is that Linus gets to speak his mind, since he’s big enough NVidia can’t ignore him.

It's pure insanity! The main PR guy bungles the one job he had.
I think Covid is making some people lose their minds a bit.
This was nVidia seeing how far they can push things. Just look at the shit Samsung India are pulling. Nvidia wants to do that too.
It's all a huge lie to try to get the masses to see Nvidia as Gods, but it's just making them look more and more disconnected and psycho
Nvidia are desperate to uphold the veil that they are outright dominant, but we only have to look at the increasing delays between card releases, the stagnant performances per dollar across new generations to see they're beginning to get stuck. Their revenue is drying up bit-by-bit, accelerated by the current economic crisis, and its only a matter of time before they get overtaken.
