    To those who want to know what’s happening when you do this mod, the distortion circuit is controlled by an op-amp, with the LEDs inline with the circuit to lower the voltage required for the signal to break up. Red LEDs have a forward voltage of around 2V, which is the voltage that they “turn on,” so when 2V is applied to them they start clipping the signal to ground as they pass voltage through them.
    The op-amp controlling the circuit will also clip, but at a much higher voltage of 9V, which is the rail voltage. That’s why there’s a massive increase in headroom before clipping after removing the LEDs, but the trade off is there’s also a massive increase in volume very low on the dial. Your amp will scream, but trying to keep it quiet will be the trick instead.
    I just bought one of these and am considering adding a rotary switch that will let me swap through several different distortions, from LEDs to germanium diodes, or nothing at all, and get the best of everything.

      Make a short video when u do this. I my self am going with an Orange 20W 8". The Vox didn't look loud enough but better with the MOD. But I need a practice amp I can play quiet when needed. Would love to add a breadboard add on in the amp to mess around with tones :)

    Bought a Pathfinder 10 when they first were introduced because I was so pleased with my Pathfinder 15. Was very disappointed in the 10. Barely ever used it at all. A month ago I finally did the LED mod. Now it's all I plug into. I have 11 amps but the 10 has become my favorite. Put it on the coffee table and enjoy.

      @@carlosnoriega7296 In my opinion, yes, but Vox stopped making the Pathfinder15 in 2012 or 2013. I got mine in the first run of manufacture in 1998. When they were still being manufactured you could pick up a second hand one fairly cheap but now they are going for higher prices than when they were being offered new, unfortunately. Just...wow with the way your mod! Red LED here is for distrortion clipping. If you need more smooth drive just try to replacing pair of Red Led with another color like pair of yellow, green, or blue even the color combination like yellow with green, yellow with blue etc. Also you can replace pair of Red LED with switching diode like 1N4148 etc, to get more saturated distortion. All these combination clipping mod will work with various results depend on your taste. Good luck.

    Wow! Certainly a big difference in volume and clarity. There's no doubting that. But, is that necessarily what's wanted from a small practice for use in most people's homes with neighbours? I just ordered one of these amps and I think I'll be leaving the LEDs in.

  • @ald7248
    @ald7248 6 років тому +12

    I really don't think the 10 takes the LED cut mod as well as the 15r. With the 10 the mod gives you extra volume and clean room - but you lose the harmonics (though they are clearly the typically-rough SS amp harmonics). And the result is quite unnatural.

    • @philclarke7712
      @philclarke7712 5 років тому +2

      I have a standard 10 and the overdrive channel is just horrible. Unusable. There's not a harmonic to be found in there. I'm considering the mod because I don't use the damn channel anyway. Love the clean with gain maxed out though.

    • @lioncurlew
      @lioncurlew 2 роки тому

      At the end of the day, the Vox Pathfinder 10 is a fairly simple "Practice" type amp, so if you mod it and like the new tone, then job done.
      I like the clean channel now with the mod and it sounds great with the Twiggy Blues Guitar pedal.
      The Pathfinders' Overdrive sounds better now at mid gain settings and can go very loud,, though this might burn out the speaker eventually.
      But as a Practice amp, the mod improves it very nicely.
      Remember this is not designed to be on full volume and gain all the time, but with sensible settings, it now sounds great.

    You mean... remove those two Red LEDs and that's it?
    No more soldering thing? Is that safe? I mean the LED is acting like a limiter to the voltage not to spike and prevents the components inside to stress out, right? Enlighten me more pls... this MOD is great btw. I'm planning to Mod mine too.

      be careful, you will have 3 times more output, unhook the speaker and used a 2-12''cab and you will blow the landlord away and he or she will think you have a marshall stack!

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters 4 роки тому +3

      It's essentially safe-ish. What is happening is you're removing the diode clipping circuit. The LEDs are diodes that activate when reaching a certain voltage and 'clip' the waveform voltage and send it to ground. If you disconnect them, you just are no longer clipping the gain. Gain clipping is what creates distortion. It's often used in pedals and solid state amps. I'm not exactly sure what this will do to the power amp section of the amp in the long run though.

      germanium diodes have a lower forward voltage, so it will actually make it more distorted, not less. It might be a nicer sounding distortion though than the LEDs

    can somebodyt tell me how will this effect the drive channel?

    • @SadChimchar
      @SadChimchar 4 роки тому +2

      It changes the sound of the distortion, it becomes more of a pleasing overdrive-type distortion instead of the "box of bees" sound. Listen to the part near the end of the video where he compares them. I should tell you though - it does take a little bit of the fuzz out of the Distortion channel. Makes it slightly cleaner. I really like it, but you should decide whether it's your kinda thing or not before doing it

      @@osamabinlaggin69 yep, possibly. But if you've got a distortion pedal it might be worth it. Some people do this mod specifically so that they can get more headroom for their pedals, it can really scream (the default distortion channel on the pathfinder isn't that great for metal ig)

      Ian Parker in clean mode you'll also note extra headroom. I did not notice any other effect such as distortion

      Gordon Hazell my best guess is that vox know this Is a killer amp. It's basically a mini ac15vr .. only with out the tube/valve in the Poweramp.
      Don't get me wrong I don't say this a 1:1 vox AC15vr.. that one is completely made with tansistors.. this little amp got opamps.. and it's tone is definitely different. But pretty much vox ..
      To continue on the vox story. Vox made a pretty decent sounding amp. That is obviously if you remove the LEDs it sound pretty big.. this amp is meant for playing at home.. making it to good will mean that people will use it for performing live.. perhaps with a microphone.. and never buying a real AC15/30vr or the real tube version .. there is a video up on UA-cam that say swop the speaker for a 8 inch .. well that is a improvement as well .. I assume that vox discontinue the vox pathfinder 15 because of the reason I have written above .. it sounded to good for a practice amp.. and had basically all the features you expect from a real amp..
      And that's why vox made the vox pathfinder 10. But guess what.. vox re-used the circuit design from the vox pathfinder 15.. only this time they leave out the revurb and Tremelo and also using a smaller cab. And changed the 8 inch speaker to a 6,5 inch ..
      So bottom line is.. marketing... Vox want to get you in the vox sound .. and when you got the taste for it they hope that you buy the real deal.. because this is just a sample of what vox can do.. that of course un modified 😉

      yes that is why i pre-amp this vox 10 out to my other tube amps, the overdrive is the best i have ever heard in my 43 years of guitar playing. i also rig up a footswitch for the clean& overdrive too, and mod the clean ch for more volume.@@royrijpma
