  • 1700 - 1200 BCE - The first Indo-Europeans documented arrived in Anatolia and completely changed the face of the Near East, even going toe to toe with the mighty Egyptians, as well as the revived Assyrians.
In this episode The History of the World Podcast dives into the rise and fall of the Hittite civilization and empire. As far as I know, "anthropomorphic" doesn't mean "half human and half animal". The word comes from the words άνθρωπος (human)+ μορφή (form)= ανθρωπομορφικός (anthropomorphism) and when we are talking about anthropomorphic Gods, it means that although they are Gods and they shouldn't have qualities of humans, these Gods do (eg Goddess Hera was JEALOUS of Zeus (not that he hadn't given her reasons to be) but jealousy is a human feeling. Poseidon got angry at certain heroes and wanted them to suffer or even die (again anger is something that characterizes humans and not Gods.). It also means that they were depicted as having the appearance of humans. We recognize Greek Gods in ancient statues etc and they look exactly like humans. Let's remember the Artemision bronze that is called either Poseidon or Zeus depending on the interpretation of what he was about to throw (a lighting bolt or a trident)... I hope this helps.

Yes these are extremely helpful to see all these City-States/Kingdoms/Tribes/Empires in relation to each other within the wider region physically and it's especially helpful to see them change through time. Gives the viewer (at least it did for me) a feeling of the kinetic reality of it all, not the static feeling it might have from only using words and non-changing images. THANK YOU!

The Hittites and their Empire are one of the greatest and earliest civilizations in history. and their empire would expand across Asia Minor, into the northern Levant and Upper Mesopotamia.
If you love the Bronze Age, the Ancient Near East and the Hittites, then this mug is for you! It also has the archaeological rendering of Hattusa on the back!

I believe iron was also lighter than bronze giving the wielder a slight speed advantage. As in any skill, if you train with bronze swords against instructors also with bronze swords one develops muscle memory. If you then come up against a real adversary that is a split second faster it would be very difficult to adapt before being bested.

Was there a gradual shift in the names of those Hittite kings? up till 17th century BC they sounded more like Indo-Aryan (as if almost lifted from Hindu Puranas) and from 16th century onwards they adopted some local names? however, Mitanni who appeared in 17th century BC has Indo-Aryan names closer to Puranic King names. Just curious.

Did the Hittites ever venture into the Hellespont?

    • @historyoftheworldpodcast5234
      @historyoftheworldpodcast5234 4 роки тому +1

Interesting question. Most Hittite territorial ambition would have been to their southeast or along the Levantine coastal lands, so they may not have needed to concern themselves with the Hellespont. If we were to believe that Wilusa was the Hittite name of the settlement that controlled access in and out of the Hellespont, then they would have had good knowledge of it, but it was likely governed by other civilisations such as the Assuwa and the Ahhiyawa. If the Hittites gathered wealth from the Black Sea region, it may have been enough for them to have control of the Bosphorus to prevent those who had traversed the Hellespont from further ambition. I don't believe that any evidence exists that will allow us to catagorically answer that question.

Some of the Aryans after leaving India, entered Babylon, Assyria and Egypt. They are called Panis in Rig Veda. Most of them settled in Asia Minor (Historians History of the World, 1902). Rig Veda mentioned them as great navigators using Satarika Nau (a ship with 100 oars).
Original people of Assyria were not Semitic. Before 4000 BC, Southern Babylon was the original home of the Sumerians from India and Northern Babylon originally came from central Asia. Modern name Mesopotamia came from the original Madhya Vedi, according to the Historians History of the World (Vol 1 and 2, 1902). One of the most famous King of Babylon was Asur Bani Pal, a pure Sanskrit name. Both Hittite and Mitranis used to speak Indo-European language. Their gods were Vedic gods.
HR Hall, curator of the British Museum wrote (Hall, 1939), “The ethnic type of the Sumerians so strongly marked in their statues and relief was as different from those of the races which surround them as was their language from those of the Semites; they were decidedly Indian in type. The face type of the average Indian of today is no doubt much the same as that of his race ancestors thousands of years ago. And it is by no means improbable that the Sumerians were an Indian race. It was in the Indian home, perhaps the Indus valley; we suppose for them, that their culture developed. There their writings may have invented and progressed from a purely pictorial to a simplified and abbreviated from which afterwards in Babylonia took on its peculiar cuneiform appearance owing to its being written with a square ended stylus on soft-clay. There is little doubt that India must have been one of earliest centres of human civilization and it seems natural to suppose that the strange un-Semitic people who came from the East to civilise the West were of Indian origin, especially when we see with our eyes how very Indian the Sumerians were in type”.
There were linguistic and ethnic resemblance between the Sumerians and the Dravidians, people from South India. Both Rig Veda and Mahabharata mentioned the Deva-Asura war, which lasted 32 years in which Devas, the Aryans of North India, driven other tribes. In both Harappa and Babylon an unknown script was discovered, demonstrating close connection between the Indus valley and Babylon. Woolley in Ur found a similar seal with a very early cuneiform inscription (Woolley, 1929). Indus culture is older than Sumerian and Egyptian culture (Hall, 1939, 1928).
According to the Puranas, the Sumerians were driven out by Rudra to shores of the western sea. The two brothers Vritra and Bala, with their Aryan followers settled in ancient Persia and Mesopotamia respectively. The Panis, allies of the Asuras, were also ousted and they settled down on the shore of the Levant sea, according to the Puranas. Mazumdar (1917) thought it was in 2800 BC but according to the latest research it can be before 9000 BC. Their capital was Tyre.
Indra led the Aryans to Apa, modern Afghanistan. Vritra made a treaty with Indra and founded his capital in Babylon. However, according to Rig Veda, Indra broke that treaty and killed Varitra. Indra then went to East Europe and killed sons of Varashika of the Vrichivat clan ( Rig Veda, V, VI, 27, 5). Thus, Russia, East Europe, Greece, West Asia, Mesopotamia, Persia, Afghanistan and India were filled by these Aryans.
(This is quoted from our forthcoming book, 'Ethics, Morality and Business' to be published by Palgrave-Macmillan.)

This site like any other sites and history books on near east depict and narrate the history after 2500 BC as if the history of west Asia bigins with imiggratin of nomadic semite tribes from Africa to the region. It is very obviouse that the history of this region goes back to more than 12 mellenia dominated by people of non semetic origin. People invented agriculture pottery an slow wheel. They built megalethic sites in South East turkey. Transfered their knowledge to Europe and Britton to build Stonehenge in Britten, Spain & France. They worshiped sun they even dominated the delta of Nile in Eygept their mark is until today could be seen as winged sun in many Egyption architectural sites. Their terotories started from west and north Iran (befor the Persians came to south Iran) to the mediteranian see, the whole Turkey and Lavant. This nation had many dynasties with different names but in the modern time they are called Kurds in which many indoarian and indoeuopian integrated. Apparently the word Kurds is a taboo for the historians and archeologists. I wande how long will be hidden from people.

You grievously exaggerate the use of iron forging among the Hittites. Most agree that any weapons made of iron were so rare they were held by nobility and mainly for display. It is likely the iron used by the ancient Hittites was derived from meteorites and therefore had a high nickel content.

Indo-Europeans are a concept created by linguists and the derivative are the Proto-Indo-Europeans whose identity and origin remain a mystery to this day, with the most popular theory being the Kurgan theory which suggests that Indo-European speakers such as the Hittites and the subsequent Luwians among others eminated from the Eurasian steppe. So by Indo-Europeans we are referencing Indo-European speakers who spoke a language distinct from the Hatti culture, and who possibly migrated into the Hattic lands of Anatolia.

      Youre
Statement is tschnically correct but I'm pretty sure it was an accident so im going to explain how they came up with the word anthropomorphic
athropomorphic was formed by combining 2 greek roots derived from the words;😮
      Anthrõpos which means man.
      and
      Morphe which means form
Which is why its definiton could be summarized as
Something with features and mannerisms like those of a human, but which is not human.
That's why it explicitly does not apply where somebody who is human exhibits inhuman traits.
So now do you understand how while your statement was technically correct i was 100 percent sure you'd accidentally stumbled into the correct position and though i haven't got to the part he uses it am also asumming the narrator used it right?

Hell yes they were. And the bakka valley is near baalbek. Not Mecca. Baalbek was the mount Solomon built for pharaohs daughter who came up from the city of David which had a mound. I kings 5:13-18. The base of baalbek is the mount. Various temple complexes have been on top of it. It definitely change when the 10 tribe's separated and the Assyrian conquest.

@Vajasrava Nachiketa its like the three original sons of Noah were left. You can say abramhic, but in some way they really just destroyed themselves. Once Israel took possession of canaan, they really didnt try to expand. Unlike the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians and Romans. The jew just wanted there spot so they could peacefully live up to an impossible law. Together they always did well.
      Peace and agap'e.

@Vajasrava Nachiketa those offshoots you talk about such as Nicene creed christianity, Islam, Gnostic Judaism and Buddhism are rooted in Zoroastrianism and Greek philosophy. Nothing in common with Judaism or the law of Moses and therefore the law of the christ. Your twisting the facts. Even Ghandi one said if all the nation got together with teaching of Jesus Christ we have true peace and security. The above is why that never happens. For reasons you said.
      Peace and agap'e.

@Vajasrava Nachiketa yes i agree with you and jews and non-Nicene creed christianity always found peace there. But these others were always not peaceful and forcefully pushed themselves and beliefs on others.

@Vajasrava Nachiketa have you ever considered worshipping without eyes. To just have Faith that the father is there, with spirit alone. To rely on knowledge for truth and not an image like a cross or even fire.

Does this guy not know Arabs are semites???? He classified them separately
The Bedouin have been always around even in the levant (sham) there is desert in Syria and Palestine and Jordan and Iraq down towards the Arabian peninsula when Islam spread out of the Arabian peninsula many of the tribes in sham join them and even today there are still nomadic Arab tribes so I don't understand why they never include the northern Arab tribes and Bedouin tribes outside the Arabian peninsula

No iron wasn't stronger than bronze it was cheaper.

I love this discussion! Yes, society was forced into iron use when the preferred metal was bronze. Bronze was far more practical than iron. However, those who mastered iron found that the weaponry was very effective and durable over time. Iron is actually not much stronger than well produced bronze. The innovation of carburising techniques and effective crucible production really helped to effect iron production positively. This is something that the later Assyrians developed expertise in.
