  • After the wall mounted tablet video, I had a number of people ask me about how I pulled off a full screen 'Waze" page. This video shows you exactly how I did it, as well as goes over the Waze Travel Time integration (Since it's related and easy to setup! I complete this video with a basic automation to show how to set a light to differnet colors based on commute times.
    Some of the stuff I mention in this video that will be helpful to know:

    Nice video. You can make this in one automation using the choice action and not entering a minimum or a maximum in the Trigger.

      Thankyou!! I had a feeling there had to be a way to do that but wasn’t familiar with choice yet! I’ll pin this so others in the community can see this, that’s great to know!

    Potential improved automation would take the travel time from green to yellow to red on a scale, then set the color variably based on updates. You could also use a 1 min fade between colors so it doesn't look too choppy when updating.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 роки тому

      Yes I like that! I’ll have to play with it more. It’s going to be useful as things open back up. I may chart the times in Grafana for a bit to show what the range is to have a meaningful idea of when to switch to Red...almost like traffic data analysis.

    Thanks a lot for your grat video. This is exactly what I searched for. The map showed beautifully, but there is no advise how to reach my destination. Also I don't see a traveling time to my destination. I'm pretty new, so could you please give me a hint to make it happen.To be honest, this is a solution I seached for lots of time. Thanks in advance

      I'm glad it was helpful! The thing is this is limited by what the integration offers and the , so I'm not clear on if you'd be able to get advice on how to reach the destination. The traveling time should come from the integration (Timecode 2:45 in the video starts showing that).

    This is pretty cool! I wonder iF there's a way of creating an average commute time sensor and have an automation based off travel time being above that,with Alexa tts?

    Great video! Is it possible to show the route your travel time is based on on the map? I have two completely different routes and I’m never sure which route to take. I would like to see the suggested route when I click the waze map instead of an empty map whitout entering the destination manually.

      @@geektoolkit Im not sure how to do it but there is a input Substring * that allows you to force the integration to use a particular route. Travel time is great but without knowning which one its kinda useless lol. Thanks for the info maybe i can figure the rest out if i do ill post it.

      They moved it from YAML to the UI. You should be able to add waze via the UI integrations now which is much easier! www.home-assistant.io/integrations/waze_travel_time/

      @@geektoolkit Thank you for the video and response. I was actually hoping to go the YAML route so as to set something up that I could easily modify the point of origin (my phone or wife's phone location) to destination address/GPS. Still, even with the integration at present it is pretty solid.

    Great video. 3 qeustions
    1. If i only want to fire the automation on weekdays is that possible
    2. can i set it from a time like 30 minutes to just be greater then the time it is now ie i need to leave now kind of warning
    3. is there a way to make the map show the route

      Thanks! I honestly am not sure, I haven't done much lovelace customization (yet). One thing I think I'd consider is maybe a picture card, and then try to use the CSS based on state (or a different image even which could be cool..could have images of cars based on the time) www.home-assistant.io/lovelace/picture-entity/. I'll try it out when I get time and if I pull something off I'll do a followup

    Thank you for this video, it has made things a whole lot easier in commute time. Just need to tart it up but the entity is there now. Oh with the waze screen, do you struggle with the screen using the two fingers to navigate? when i scroll around using 2 fingers, it interprets my gestures to refresh the screen.

      @geektoolkit  3 роки тому

      Thanks! Glad it was helpful. A little bit. It wasn’t super clean. I use it mainly to see what events are there in my route or around my house, and one finger to drag to peek which has worked wel

      @@geektoolkit how does your say 1 finger to drag? Mine says use two fingers? Also do you have any easy guide (or know about) people detection? I.e. Track where people are in the town? Would you make a video on that as nothing on UA-cam shows anything recent.

      Glad it helps! From what I can tell the region is used for address searching. If you’re using Long/Latitude it may work just by putting in EU. I’d try that to see if it works. I also found that it appears to be working from this pypi module: github.com/kovacsbalu/WazeRouteCalculator

    thanks for the video. doesn't a 30.5 duration value trigger both of them and just make the last one win?

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 роки тому

      It depends on what it was before. It triggers, from what I’m seeing, when it exits a range and then renters. I’m still playing with it to try to predict it a bit better when it’s on the borders. It seems like if it was say 32, goes down to 30.5, it triggers the “below” and doesn’t “retrigger” the above (because it was already in that range)

    I can go to the Waze site and get the map I want, and I can grab the embed URL and paste it into another window and see the correct map, but when I add it to the card in HA all I get is a Waze labelled gray background with zoom controls and no map. Any ideas? Edit: I can get the same map up with Google Maps embed URL, but obviously without any traffic detail.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 роки тому

      I'm not sure...that sounds like what I did. I know if I didn't use the 'share' portion to get the embedded url that I'd get similar behavior..it'd work in other browsers but not the . If you followed my steps and are getting different results I'm not sure what could cause that :(

    • @notthesnail
      @notthesnail 3 роки тому +1

      @@geektoolkit It's unfortunate, but what's worse is now they've broken Waze Travel Time (as you use it here). They have a proper integration (since 2021.5.0) which imports the platforms from configuration.yaml, so you can then remove it. Except it is using origin and destination for the unique ID, which means you can't do CAR and TAXI between the same points. In my case I was able to get all three major routes between work and home (highway, toll, surface steets) until I upgraded and it only imported the first one. And I can't manually add more unless I want to subtly change either the origin or destination. Still not fixed as of 2021.5.3. Might be time to get a Google dev account and try Google Maps.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 роки тому

      @@notthesnail Argh! I JUST made this video and they already broke it! sigh. And regressed it. I thought that if something worked in yaml they'd protect that functionality. Ok, well, part of the culture...they break, we figure out and fix. I'll give them a release though and see if they end up fixing it first, maybe I can do a UI followup if they allow for the same functionality that they had.
