Canadian Thanksgiving is a carry over of the harvest festivals and celebrations from Europe. It occurs earlier in the year than the US due to our shorter growing season. It was originally held in late October but was bumped back a week relatively recently (1950"s ?) to give Remembrance Day more significance.
The first North American Thanksgiving was actually in Canada as well.

Yay Canada! I live about 10 hours from Whistler.
Man I've lived just outside Vancouver my whole life and car break ins happen like that all the time, i had a similar one 2 weeks ago where they stole a flashlight, change, liquor and 2 grams of weed from my truck but left my rugby bag, work boots and tool bag in the backseat and my mountain bike in the canopy.. Hope that asides from that break in the rest of your experience up here was great!

Car break in's are very common in Vancouver Canada. Especially with US tags.
Canadian Thanksgiving is to celebrate harvest. Now alot don't finish harvest before Thanksgiving but if everything goes right, you'll usually finish a week before Thanksgiving

Someone saw the backpack in the front, smashed and grabbed, ran off before anyone could get out there. They weren't interested in taking the time to search the whole vehicle, and they would have done it on a whim. It's quite likely that they were a drug addict looking for stuff to pawn. Vancouver has some drug problems.

Man, no. Don't leave anything in your car in Vancouver. You'll get your window smashed in if even an empty pack of cigarettes or a couple quarters are visible. The only time they don't smash your car window in is if its empty. I told a friend to put everything away, he left a cosco box of Snickers bars in the backseat, wham. $20 in sugar for the smasher, and $200 minimum damages for you. I say minimum because it fucking rains a lot in BC and nice upholstery gets expensive. These guys doing this do NOT GIVE A SHIT what it costs you or how little they stand to gain.

The RCP are everywhere in that Neighborhood. He was near Burnaby from what I can tell and if the cops see a crackhead with an expensive guitar case they will stop them and arrest them. The guys doing this are almost universally heavy drug histories and well known so the guy who did it probably left it because it would be too much trouble to get all the way downtown or to their crackhouse hangout.
Well known to the cops that is. Canada's justice system doesn't handle drug heads as strongly as in the States. RCP does good work but there's only so much they can do to stem the drug epidemic in B.C.
Please take me back to the states with you, I hate it here in The North

Canadian thanksgiving is celebrated for much the same reasons as American thanksgiving. The date was intentionally moved so that Remembrance day (Nov 11) would have the much needed reverence it deserves.
