This is the first lens I bought when the A7III came out. Almost 3 years later it is still my go-to lens for travel and studio work. I love primes but can't beat the convenience of this zoom lens when trying to travel light. Great IQ, excellent auto-focus and compact.
This is the lens that stays coupled with my A7iii 95%+ the time. Excellent all around lens with great IQ. I don't like to be switching lenses to minimize getting the sensor dirty. For me, it will always be worth it.
Can you tell me if the stabilization is any better than the one from the kit lens? I like handheld but as the a7iii itself has really bad stabilization I wonder if this lens makes a difference.
The 24-105 is my go-to lens. Even though others in the same basic zoom range have come along from Sigma, Tamron, and Sony since this lens was first introduced, the 24-105 is my day-to-day and travel lens. To be sure, I'll take a faster, wider-angled lens for sunrise/sunset and landscapes when I need it and a super zoom like the 100-400 for wildlife and areas I know I'm going to need more reach. But, day to day, this is the one on my camera! Excellent lens. Good review!
Thanks Jake, just purchased. I’m in so many locations shooting for work that I don’t know what lens will be best. I think this lens will give me everything I need for 99% of situations. ISO performance is so good these days (especially on the a7siii) so f/4 is perfectly fine.
The 24-105 f4 is a powerhouse lens. I got used to this focal length when shooting on a 5dMII for a commercial video/stills studio, the Sony version of this lens is amazing for video and stills.
This was the 1st lens I bought for my a7iii and it would be the LAST one I'd sell if I was forced too. Here's an FYI that may help some . . .I bought a Pelican 1200 hard case and it works PERFECTLY with an a7iii and the 24-105 with the lens hood ON. I used the pick and pluck foam and sprayed it with 'Plasti-Dip' (several coats) once I had cut it to fit . . . If you lay it out smartly, you can cut spaces for a couple extra batteries and a filter (I use a CP filter) fits like a glove ! With this setup, you can toss it in the bed of a truck, bang it around in the bottom of a boat w/o fear of any water getting in . . . it's absolutely full proof. Just pop the latches, pull out the camera and shoot . . . throw it back in and it's SAFE . . . no more fooling around with all the bags, zippers, nonsense etc. . . . plus it's all but crush proof. Cheers for a solid review.
First.. those are some amazing still and video shots!!! What a great canvas you live in. And, very happy - this is the lens I paired with my new A7iv - probably won’t have the same low light performance you’re seeing with the A7Siii but nevertheless, I think a great start as I re-enter full frame. Thanks Jake! Great content as always.
Great video, and you've answered every question I had about this lens. Currently have the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 which I absolutely adore, but I'm needing the extra reach more and more, plus the stabilisation is very attractive. This has helped me make my mind up; I'm gonna make the switch!
Another awesome video Jake. I yesterday just bought the 24-105 as “Renewed”item on Amazon for $1050. I plan to pair it with my a7siii and a7c. I watched many videos on this lens and was undecided until I watched you video. Keep up the great work,
Just got a 2nd hand today for a steal price of 700USD. Almost new and in a mint condition. When I saw this in a group page on facebook up for sale I immediately pm'ed the seller. Nice lens, build quality is good feels premium, the images I took from it were sharp. Just lucky to have it.
Thank you for your honest review on this lens. I purchased this lens for my a7iii a few months ago and I love it. I thought about purchasing the new Tamron 28-75 g2, but I think I'll save my money and just use my primes for portraits.
This was the first lens I picked up for my A7iii a couple years ago and have loved using it in so many situations. Glad you're getting some good use out of it and hopefully will motivate others to give it a go.
Hi Jake, really enjoy your videos especially being a fellow Alaskan. I hope that was a boat over your left shoulder @ 4:47! Thanks for this video. I'm convinced to purchase the 24-105. Knowing that my current camera gear's super zoom will not be available until who knows when I'm picking up the Sony 200-600 & A7IV. Thanks again!
Jake I have this lens with the Sony a7r iiia. You're video has opened my eyes to a new way of viewing and using this lens. You are naturally talented and I like your approach to photography. Thank you! I really enjoyed your tutorial.
I’m very close to swapping out my tamron 28-75 for this lense. Sure f2.8 is nice but i usually shoot during daylight and like you mentioned the OSS is a nice feature plus the extra reach!
It's a great lens indeed, I use it for a year now and it's true, it can really take a beating :)! Also, thanks, Jake, for all your videos, really informative.
Going to Scotland in a few weeks, picking back up photography. Was going to pick up just a 55mm 1.8 prime lens for the Sony a7iii when in Scotland but this video changed my mind.
@@JakeSloan yeah I’m just worried it would be too tight in a lot of situations, especially for some of the landscape stuff I’ll be shooting a lot. Have never owned a fast prime with any of the few cameras I’ve had, have all been zooms.
How would you compare it to the Tamron 28-200 you reviewed earlier? It’s smaller and lighter but still much longer tele, it seems for a hiker it would be the better choice. Is the image that much better? Bear in mind, I’m not a pro, all my videos go to UA-cam. Will any of my viewers ever see a difference except half the reach? I carry a Samyang 18mm1.8 AF lens for wide shots and blurry background, so I won’t miss the extra 4mm on the wide end. I think that combo is a much better vlogging setup, the Samyang is remarkably sharp for the money. My guess is the two together weigh less than the 24-105. In your helicopter rescue video, wouldn’t you regret not having the 28-200?
I don't think any of the viewers would notice the difference and if you carry around another wide lens then you are good to go. For me only taking one lens and the added benefit of OSS in the lens really made a difference. I still really like the 28-200 and I think its probably the best budget option for an all in one lens out there For Sony E and yes in that specific scenario the 28-200 was the perfect lens with the extra reach. Thankfully I am not involved in those situation every single day lol
The irony is I have both of them and probably 95% of my UA-cam videos are shot on my Smartphone (Samsung s21 Ultra) with ultra wide, normal, 3X and 10X zoom. So it is both wider and longer, all while being incredibly smaller and lighter than either of them. My A7c and A7RIV have pretty much been relegated to specialized personal photo and video shoots, mostly with Primes or the 200-600.
@@CheapRVliving personally I find 28mm a bit tight for an all around lens. You can crop a photo or a video a bit if you need more reach, and you will not see much difference, you can also upsample with the new Lightroom AI. Yet I ordered the Tamron 18-300 for my Sony crop frame. I also have a Nikon Z5, I may sell the 24-200 and 240-70 f4 and replace both of them with the upcoming 24-120 f4. It depends what you shoot., In nature you can get away with 28mm, but if you photograph a city 24mm is good to have. You can also stitch 3 images together with Lightroom's panorama function, that is pretty good. At the end it depends what you shoot. I think I need a 24mm a lot more often than I need a 200mm. You already have a 200-600. I think the 24-105 has more flexibility than a 28-200. also it has image stabilization, which helps a lot, as Sony IBIS is not very good (unlike Nikon's in body stabilization)
Thanks for sharing. I'm ready to switch to Sony with the release of A7IV and been mulling which lens to buy, Sigma 24-70/2.8 or Sony 24-105/4 OSS. It would have been an easier choice if Sony didn't have OSS or if Sigma had image stabilization. Tough call!
@@charruaporelmundo that 4mm ( 24mm vs 28mm) makes a big difference. While the long end can be addressed with a teleconverter, you can't get the extra wide shots with the 28mm.
@@michaellim4165 Tele converter on what lens? Only 70-2002.8, and the big teles 100-400, 200-600 admit teleconverter, and those lenses are not around 700 usd but over 2000usd. My choice for travel was sony 20 mm and tamron 28-200.
Hi, great video and great location. I have this lens as I bought it as a bundle with the A7iii a couple of months ago but so far I’ve mostly used my 200-600 for bird photography. Wish I had a location like yours locally to try it out. With regard to the zoom range, did you try out the Clear Image Zoom option for either stills or video? If so, what’s your opinion? It could give you up to 210mm with the same lens.
if you shoot with the a7iii or a7riii/rIV then clear image zoom works really well to give you that extra reach! it really comes down to the size of the photo for photos but in video there is no difference in quality
I have the Sony G 24-105 f4. No complaints here either ;-) Great lens, the only one I currently own, until I decide to go wider (will get the 16-35 Zeiss f4, or if budget allows the Sigma 14-24 f2.8) or more telephoto (I'm guessing the Sigma 100-400 would make sense). Anyway great content Jake, and thanks
it's fixed f4 through out the zoom range not fixed as in you cannot change it, many cheaper zoom lenses have a variable aperture as they zoom in they will go from say f4.5 to f6.7 where this lens stays at a constant aperture regardless of the focal length
Great video..I agree with all you said…I purchased this lens used two years ago and I use it for everything including time lapses…Thanks for sharing ,Jake…
Great Video again, Random note, Im really happy for your growth over the past year, I know it won't stop here but I am not even a camera person and I find my self watching most of your stuff :)
@@JakeSloan thank you so much for getting back! I’m trying to decide for a new lens so been watching your reviews. Outstanding job and please continue!! Sub’d +1
Hi, congratulations for the very interesting video. I'd like to ask you a question. For me the stabilization of a camera is very important because I make all my 4K documentaries around the world freehand, without tripods and without stadyshot. If I had to buy the Sony A7 IV and the Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, could the two stabilizations, both of the camera and that of the lens, work together and in synergy? Do you think the Sony A7 IV with Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS might be the right camera for me or is it better that I look to another camera with better stabilization? Thank you very much
I don't know if you already bought the Sony a7 IV, but if you can effort go for the a7sIII, because of the better rolling shutter handling. Your image will be more appealing when shot handheld.
will it be weather seal if i am to pair with a7ii? i am still practicing. i want to take good shots on my trip. it's in the tropic, and dusty. what do you suggest? this lens is now at about $1K, expensive, but i can let go of a few lunches to get it. :)
I was planning on getting the newly released Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 for this exact reason, a one lens for everything. I'll be using it for mostly photos rather than video... would you recommend I go with a Sony lens instead? Thanks for all the fantastic content and keep up the great work!
Don't get the tamron. I've watched a 100 videos on lenses and tamron never looks sharp enough to print photos and to me, that's my standard for these lenses, must be better than my expensive phone. Sigma is a great alternative to Sony's G lenses.
Thanks Jake ! 24 - 105mm is awesome lens I use mainly for Wedding's video's & still's paired up with Sony FX3 . I've been wanting to pickup up sigma 24 - 70 I'll guess I'll save my $$
You think that with this stabilized Lens ;Sony 24-105 f4, you can have a better portrait and landscape freehand photography than with this Lens (Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 or Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art) better Aperture but not stabilized ? Thanks a lot
Thanks for the very good review. About the stabilization. There are some examples where the lens OSS and Active stabilization don't work together so well. Jittering etc. Also in your example in my opinion the IBIS + OSS was better than the IBIS + OSS + Active. Have you noticed anything like that? Also still thinking which would give better stabilization for the video: 1. IBIS + Active (like with the Tamron 28-75) or 2. IBIS + OSS. (like with the Sony 24-105) ?
Thanks I do find that handheld most of the time active off is the best when pairing a camera and lens that both have stabilization. I have found that handheld static shots or very slow panning shots look much better with all stabilization turned on.
Whittier is amazing. I'm loving these comparison & tech spec reviews. Thanks for posting! I'm looking at doing pioneer peak and I'm thinking a lense like this will help.
@@JakeSloan i want to document the entire hike. A mix of self narratives, scenic shots & drone shots, and capture wildlife. I will check the specs on my all in one, but for solo creation stuff, and the remote stuff, that weather resistance and stabilization is crucial.
@@JakeSloan nervous about winter up there. It is already covered in snow... playing it by ear pending weather conditions... which is always rough around here.
How do you like it compared to your Tamron 28-200? I think the OSS makes a huge difference. Do you find yourself missing the reach or is the 24mm wide end more usable for you?
Very good video Jake 👍🏻 I also really like the lens, I just think it's difficult to zoom smoothly by hand. Is it just me, or has anyone else had a similar experience?
The 24-105 is better for handheld stuff since it has the optical stabilization. the tamron will be much better at low light and in low light situations.
I just sold my tamron 28-75 to buy this lens. I hardly ever shoot at 2.8 and would rather have a larger zoom range than a better aperture. excited for this. Also I like going on big hikes and adventures that I would rather just take one lens with me and save the space
Good video review! I'm thinking about getting this lens but feels really unsure about it. I had this focal range for the longest time on my old Canon. Just switched to Sony and I do mostly food videos for my channel mixed with some landscape. Is it any good for food?
Jake. Loving your content! I’m curious how this stacks up to the Tamron 28-200 in your mind? I’m going to buy one or the other and trying to decide. The tamrons reach has me itching that way.
The tamron 28-200 is definitely better in low light and has probably a bit sharper image quality. On the other hand this has stabilization in the lens as well which helps if you do a lot of handheld shooting etc. either one is great but if you plan to do more distance shooting then the tamron’s reach can’t be beat.
Awesome video with an awesome lens. Bought it recently for my A7IV and now seeking for spots. And man, how great and beatiful is the spot in alaska? I know the video is 2 years old but maybe you can tell me where it is? neverless it will be a long travel for me from germany. :)
i cant decide to buy this or not, i don't shoot like a savy, but a newbie, i need one lens to take on a trip next month. please help me decide, i want to bring back beautiful pictures of my trip.
this is an excellent all in one lens but if you need a more affordable option look at the tamron 28-200 for sony e. I did a review of it here: ua-cam.com/video/csVOhi8uUQ4/v-deo.html
If you could only choose one for travel and landscape - Sony 24-105 OR Tamron 28-200 (and price doesn’t matter because work is paying for it), which one would you suggest? I’m leaning towards Sony because I really like the buttons… but haven’t used either, so would love your input!!
Yes it is. I filmed everything (including the talking head parts) with this lens. The only stuff filmed with my phone or a drone was the broll that had the lens or me and the lens in it
@@JakeSloan I shot many years with the 28-135, even a whole movei ( land4sale.no) on a SONY fx9 ) I miss the zooming :) adn focuse racking at the same time .the SONY a7IV is better, also in d.R, than FX9, so this combo will be great !:) and thx sir for reply .
You’re welcome and no sharpening in post. I don’t like it. This was all straight out of camera filmed in Slog 3 S-Gamut.Cine and transformed/graded in post. All shot in 4K
@@JakeSloan thank you sir, very high quality on your review, I bought the lense. Its a bit "sticky" when zooming, that all I can say :)but the glass, is very good !
I use the Canon version of this 24-105 lens with an inexpensive Vello speedbooster/adapter with fantastic results. Amazing low light and all around lens for everyday use. The entire camera and lens is a little heavy at 3.5 lbs but very usuable; even on a moderate sized gimbal.
Thanks! This was exactly what I was looking for... But how is the 24-105/ if you compare this with Tamron 28-75/2,8 (that I already have)? I mostly filming outdoor stuff north of Arctic Circle in Northern Sweden. I need all stabilization I can get so is it worth to get the 24-105/4 instead of the tamron? I shoot with an A7iii. I also have another question. I just got the Sony 20/1,8 (my plan was to use this for night shoots and vlog) and that's focus breathing is terrible... Is it really the same with the Sony 24/1,4? Thanks for a very useful channel! / Matti in Jokkmokk
Hey Matti! I’d say if you have the 28-75 you are good to stick with it. What you gain with the 24-105 is the extra width at the wide end and the extra zoom as well as optional image stabilization which helps a lot! I have the 28-75 as well and I’m afraid mine doesn’t see much use anymore even though it is better in low light. If you need extra stabilization I’d say it is worth it. As far as focus breathing yes the 24 1.4 has terrible focus breathing as well but it’s just such a fantastic low light lens.
Another great review video and as always I love the fact you include plenty of tips for real world use and explain why you might choose particular settings in the field - one reason why your videos are so watchable! Also great scenery too, of course, more dramatic than my playground - Scotland - but similar in some ways (weather!!). I'm a whisker away from going for a Sony A7 iv with this lens, so your review was extremely helpful and I think I'm convinced. I'll be using it equally for stills and video. Cheers Joe
Jake Another great video from you. Thank you, Jake. I am a bit confused about F4 for Background blur in videos. is it enough? Good comparable with 2.8 ?
@@JakeSloan Thanks Jake again for Quick Reply. Is blur are noticeable between them to affect the quality for professional work? Please you opinion on this. Respect from India.
for all around shooting I would get the 24-105 unless you plan to do a lot of low light then definitely go with the 24-70 GM BUT I would wait since a version 2 of that lens is on the horizon!!
I own and enjoy the 24-105mm. As you walked through the grass slope, I noticed how wet it was. Wet likely describes Alaska. So you need to do a video discussing “best boot brands.” Also…do a comparison with the Tamron 35-150.
LOL I just released my video on the 35-150 but I didn't do a direct comparison. yes everything is wet and I probably should do a gear video about what gear I use when hiking here
I'm not even 20 seconds into the video, but let me tell you how excited I am because I've almost decided on the A7Siii paired with the Sony FE 24-105. If this video shows me what I want to see, good! But, also bad because now it's time to take out my credit card lol.
How about the Tamron 28-200mm ? I know it lacks that 24mm but there is an additional 100mm which allows you to reach 200mm.. Were you able to test out the Tamron 28-200 against the Sony 24-105? I am in between both.
I have used both and both are excellent, I think the tamron 28-200 is the best all around zoom lens for most people my review of it is here: ua-cam.com/video/csVOhi8uUQ4/v-deo.html
@@JakeSloan thanks Jake. Just bought the Sony because I tried 3 copies of Tamron today at the shop and all 3 copies had dust inside unfortunately. Sony had discount so pricewise they just had 100 EUR difference (Sony being the expensive one).
Thanks for the video, I have a sony Alpha 7 iii and a sony 85mm 1.8 for portraits, I would like to add a lens for travel. And I'm hesitating between the SONY 24-105mm G OSS and the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2. I'm afraid that f4 will be limited at night, after which I still have my 85mm 1.8, but I'll be limited on the focal length. Any advice on which one to choose? Thanks :)
I think of those 2 I would go with the Tamron 28-75 for low light alternatively if you have the budget a 20mm 1.8 and 24-105 is an excellent combo for travel
Will you be reviewing the new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2? Also, what about the upcoming Rokinon/Samyang 24-70mm f/2.8 parfocal zoom lens? Thanks.
Ah I am torn between this one and the Sony 24-240 for my A7 IV which I just got. The extra zoom is amazing, however the 24-105 seems to have better image quality (and a stable f).
I just bought it a month ago, and I am very happy with it, except that the lens has very small margin when it comes to vignetting. When I throw vnd filter on the lens and shoot in 24mm, I've got very strong vignetting on the four corners of the image. I use a step up ring: 77->82mm and a magnetic vnd filter. I wonder if I directly put on vnd filter of 77mm filter thread, are the horrible vignetting on the corners going to be gone? I found in your video that your 24mm looks fine, almost no vignetting. You seem to be using a vnd filter on that scene, right? Thanks for great reviews and tips for video shooting. I enjoy watching your videos.
I like to use primes for landscape and architecture but you really should use a tripod to get the sharpest images and if you use a tripod the need for image stabilization is much less. But, when walking around handheld image stabilization is a must so a lens like the Sony 24-105 G gives you a decent FL range with image stabilization and decent optical quality. I will be ordering the new Sony A7 IV soon and this lens is first on the list followed by some Sigma I-series primes. The Sigma I-series primes are not the fastest lenses but they are fast enough for my use and they are relatively small and light making them great for hiking and for use on a gimbal.
I like it for landscape and handheld , but I don’t know for gimbal use which focal number do you set up on the gimbal? Thanks I normally put 17-28 most the time and plan to sell my 28-75 and get the new 35-150.
If I plan to zoom with a powerful enough gimbal I’ll set it half way and balance. Most the time I stay at 24 though. I have a 35-150 in hand now so a video will be coming soon about that lens.
@@JakeSloan I can't wait for that video. 35-150 seems all prime in one if I get that lens I'll sell at least 2 prime . Although not sure if it is good as 24-105 for gimbal and travel since it is heavier.
My first experience with this lens now is that it focus hunts a lot in autofocus in low(ish) light. Much more than the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 - just a bit disappointed in that even if it is a physical fact perhaps. Did you have any such issues with this in "dusk" scenarios? I am thinking mainly about video here. (The improvements of autofocus for video in the a7s iii is so good that it is hard to go back to manual....)
agreed and I haven't had so much issue with the focus hunting with this lens and the a7sIII but I also don't use this lens in extremely low light. I'll usually switch to my 24mm GM 1.4 for those situations
That lens is about the same size as my 24-70mm GM lens. OSS and the extra reach makes this appealing to me. I can give up a stop for OSS since I mainly use it outside and my prime lenses inside. The image quality looks on par with the GM without pixel peeping. I don't think the 24-70 GM is that great honestly when paired to my high MP A1 or A7R4. It's showing it's age. I only use it as a walk around lens.
Hello. Thank you for this awesome review!! Getting hyped to buy this lens and a7iii. Can i ask you in what bitrate you render for you 4k videos and also if you use 2pass or cbr? Your videos are crisp like h*ll :D
I really want this lens since I only have the kit lens for my a7III right now. The Image quality and better focal range is good enough but is the OSS any better? The kit lens has OSS too but it's really bad and the a7III IBIS isn't as good as the a7SIII. I just don't want to buy a gimbal but still need steady footage for video :/
This is the first lens I bought when the A7III came out. Almost 3 years later it is still my go-to lens for travel and studio work. I love primes but can't beat the convenience of this zoom lens when trying to travel light. Great IQ, excellent auto-focus and compact.
Agreed!!
since the new 24-70 v2 is smaller, lighter, and sharper, i am hoping (wishing) the new 24-105 v2 will be the same!!!
This is the lens that stays coupled with my A7iii 95%+ the time. Excellent all around lens with great IQ. I don't like to be switching lenses to minimize getting the sensor dirty. For me, it will always be worth it.
I agree and that was a big reason I purchased this lens. Overall just a great single lens setup for all kinds of stuff
Same!! With the low light ability of the a7siii this combo is ridiculously good!!
Can you tell me if the stabilization is any better than the one from the kit lens? I like handheld but as the a7iii itself has really bad stabilization I wonder if this lens makes a difference.
@@TeabaggEditing this lens combined with the a7siii is EXCELLENT. the stabilization of the lens and camera combined makes ridiculously smooth footage
@@Coach_Chris_ But I dont have the S version which has way better IBIS.
I love this lens! It pairs so nicely with the 100-400 GM, giving from 24mm to 400mm in just two lenses.

Lol I know I know…
right 😂 here I am in Illinois suburbs where there's nothing going on and nothing around but dead trees and grass
Thank you and I agree!!
Thanks Jake, just purchased. I’m in so many locations shooting for work that I don’t know what lens will be best. I think this lens will give me everything I need for 99% of situations. ISO performance is so good these days (especially on the a7siii) so f/4 is perfectly fine.
Exactly right!!
Hands down the best review of the 24-105 on youtube. Great work. Picking one up soon.
Wow thank you so much!!
The 24-105 f4 is a powerhouse lens. I got used to this focal length when shooting on a 5dMII for a commercial video/stills studio, the Sony version of this lens is amazing for video and stills.
Agreed!
Thank you, great no-nonsense review, possibly the best I have seen of this lens (and I have watched many). And the footage is absolutely fantastic.
Thank you so much!
Nice tip on the pelican 1200! Thanks for the kind words
First.. those are some amazing still and video shots!!! What a great canvas you live in. And, very happy - this is the lens I paired with my new A7iv - probably won’t have the same low light performance you’re seeing with the A7Siii but nevertheless, I think a great start as I re-enter full frame. Thanks Jake! Great content as always.
the A7iv has great low light performance as well! Thanks for the kind words
Great video, and you've answered every question I had about this lens. Currently have the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 which I absolutely adore, but I'm needing the extra reach more and more, plus the stabilisation is very attractive. This has helped me make my mind up; I'm gonna make the switch!
Awesome!
just bought this for my a7iii, really enjoyed your video and cant wait to get out with mine now!
Awesome!!
Another awesome video Jake. I yesterday just bought the 24-105 as “Renewed”item on Amazon for $1050. I plan to pair it with my a7siii and a7c. I watched many videos on this lens and was undecided until I watched you video. Keep up the great work,
Fantastic
Just got a 2nd hand today for a steal price of 700USD. Almost new and in a mint condition. When I saw this in a group page on facebook up for sale I immediately pm'ed the seller. Nice lens, build quality is good feels premium, the images I took from it were sharp. Just lucky to have it.
Very nice!
I own it and love it AND you can actually zoom in longer than 105. If you use the digital zoom in the A7SIII
True
Thank you for your honest review on this lens. I purchased this lens for my a7iii a few months ago and I love it. I thought about purchasing the new Tamron 28-75 g2, but I think I'll save my money and just use my primes for portraits.
That’s a great plan! The Sony 55 is an incredible portrait lens. I also love the 85 1.8 as a great budget portrait lens.
@@JakeSloan thank you for the advice. I have the 85mm 1.8 and the kit 50mm 1.8, are you referring to the Zeiss 55mm ?
Thanks for a great review. It really helped me in my search for the right lens.
Glad to hear it!
This was the first lens I picked up for my A7iii a couple years ago and have loved using it in so many situations. Glad you're getting some good use out of it and hopefully will motivate others to give it a go.
I hope so as well. I think it’s quite underrated as a lens.
Stunning video Jake.. Best wishes
Thanks!
Yes it was lol! THat will be a really nice combo for wildlife especially. Cheers Mike!!
@@JakeSloan Thanks! Looking forward to it. Keep up the awesome work!
Jake I have this lens with the
Sony a7r iiia. You're video has opened my eyes to a new way of viewing and using this lens. You are naturally talented and I like your approach to photography.
Thank you! I really enjoyed your tutorial.
Thank you!
This does look like an amazing all around lens. I'm debating between this one and the new Tamron 28-75mm f2.8
I have the 28-75 and love it but this is a better all in one lens unless you plan to shoot in a lot of low light situations
@@JakeSloan awesome, thanks! I’m not much for low light shooting so I think the Sony is probably a better fit for me :)
I’m very close to swapping out my tamron 28-75 for this lense. Sure f2.8 is nice but i usually shoot during daylight and like you mentioned the OSS is a nice feature plus the extra reach!
Nice! I kinda did the same
The tamron 28-200mm is my fav travel lens, but if a 24-105 v2 comes out i am switching!
@@NickL0VIN i’ve been doing a lot of videos and photos with the somy 24-105 and i wish i had it sooner! Absolutely love it!
16-35 vs 24-105 which one is gud for all purpose especially for travel
I use the 24-105 for almost everything now
It's a great lens indeed, I use it for a year now and it's true, it can really take a beating :)!
Also, thanks, Jake, for all your videos, really informative.
awesome and thank you
Appreciate the video and review! I'm looking into getting this lens
Glad I could help!
Going to Scotland in a few weeks, picking back up photography. Was going to pick up just a 55mm 1.8 prime lens for the Sony a7iii when in Scotland but this video changed my mind.
Oh man the 55 1.8 prime is such a good lens as well but if you want the versatility this lens is hard to beat
@@JakeSloan yeah I’m just worried it would be too tight in a lot of situations, especially for some of the landscape stuff I’ll be shooting a lot. Have never owned a fast prime with any of the few cameras I’ve had, have all been zooms.
Excellent Tutorial Video Jake! Really Nice Lens! Very Thorough and Honest Review!
Thanks Doug!
Thanks for your detailed take on the added benefit of OSS. This is also the main reason that I am considering this lens. Cheers.
Glad it was helpful!
Tough call!
truth!
And not to mention the fantastic tamron 28-200!
Thanks a lot Mark!
Ive got the Tamron 17-28 to go with it. they are a great combination.
Hi, great video mate, one thing I don't understand is.. if its a fixed f4 lens how can you shoot in f9, f5.6 etc. Many thanks
it's fixed f4 through out the zoom range not fixed as in you cannot change it, many cheaper zoom lenses have a variable aperture as they zoom in they will go from say f4.5 to f6.7 where this lens stays at a constant aperture regardless of the focal length
Great video..I agree with all you said…I purchased this lens used two years ago and I use it for everything including time lapses…Thanks for sharing ,Jake…
fantastic thanks!!
Always great content thanks for doing this. Question what kind of Jacket are you wearing?
That's a Northface Futurelite jacket, but I have since switched to an arcteryx SV jacket. Cheers
@@JakeSloan I had to ask because it looks so good on camera, the red really pops, really enjoy everything you do
Thanks and I agree it's why I wear a red jacket lol
Great Video again,
Random note, Im really happy for your growth over the past year, I know it won't stop here but I am not even a camera person and I find my self watching most of your stuff :)
Wow thank you so much!!
Thanks for the useful, awesome review
My question is did you use any polarized filter
I did not. For this it was all a variable ND. Which does have some polarization effect but for the photos I took it off
Thank you so much. Your explanation is much better than my teacher.
You are welcome!
Would you consider this lens over the Tamron 35-150?
Well price wise yes but overall I think I’d take the 35-150 over this if I could.
Thank you very much
They will work together and I think that will be a great setup for run and gun documentary work!
the lens will be but I am unsure of how the A7ii is when it comes to weather sealing
I was planning on getting the newly released Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 for this exact reason, a one lens for everything. I'll be using it for mostly photos rather than video... would you recommend I go with a Sony lens instead?
Thanks for all the fantastic content and keep up the great work!
I should have that one to test this coming week! so if you can wait just a bit then hang on :)
Don't get the tamron. I've watched a 100 videos on lenses and tamron never looks sharp enough to print photos and to me, that's my standard for these lenses, must be better than my expensive phone. Sigma is a great alternative to Sony's G lenses.
@@having-fun-while-i-can Thanks for the advice. Won't be getting a lens just yet, so will do my research before pulling the trigger
@@JakeSloan Cheers, will keep an eye out for that!
1700e for the Price i think. It s expensive. And no IBiS
Thanks Jake ! 24 - 105mm is awesome lens I use mainly for Wedding's video's & still's paired up with Sony FX3 . I've been wanting to pickup up sigma 24 - 70 I'll guess I'll save my $$
nice!! I love this lens its great and versatile
IBIS + Active (like with the Tamron 28-75) or
2. IBIS + OSS. (like with the Sony 24-105) ?
Thanks I do find that handheld most of the time active off is the best when pairing a camera and lens that both have stabilization. I have found that handheld static shots or very slow panning shots look much better with all stabilization turned on.
Great video, ordering now...what do you have the lens button mapped to?
I leave it as a focus hold button which is the default
Whittier is amazing. I'm loving these comparison & tech spec reviews. Thanks for posting! I'm looking at doing pioneer peak and I'm thinking a lense like this will help.
thanks man! are you thinking of doing this winter? an all in one lens would definitely help to shed weight and capture the adventure!!

Nice!!
How do you like it compared to your Tamron 28-200? I think the OSS makes a huge difference. Do you find yourself missing the reach or is the 24mm wide end more usable for you?
I find it's pretty good overall. I do wish for the extra reach from time to time but generally 100mm is enough for what I do
Very good video Jake 👍🏻 I also really like the lens, I just think it's difficult to zoom smoothly by hand. Is it just me, or has anyone else had a similar experience?
this lens does have a stiff zoom ring for sure
Great video Jake. Whist do you think about this 24-105mm F4 vs Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8?
The 24-105 is better for handheld stuff since it has the optical stabilization. the tamron will be much better at low light and in low light situations.
I just sold my tamron 28-75 to buy this lens. I hardly ever shoot at 2.8 and would rather have a larger zoom range than a better aperture. excited for this. Also I like going on big hikes and adventures that I would rather just take one lens with me and save the space
Nice!!!
I'm about to buy this lens for my A7iv , great video . thanks
Good choice!
Good video review! I'm thinking about getting this lens but feels really unsure about it. I had this focal range for the longest time on my old Canon. Just switched to Sony and I do mostly food videos for my channel mixed with some landscape. Is it any good for food?
It is but you might consider a prime for that as well like the 85 or 50
Great video! I was thinking about selling my 24 to 1 05 but after this video, I’ve decided to keep it. Thanks so much!
You’re welcome!
This should be a great choice for the A7iv
absolutely
Awesome video with an awesome lens. Bought it recently for my A7IV and now seeking for spots. And man, how great and beatiful is the spot in alaska? I know the video is 2 years old but maybe you can tell me where it is? neverless it will be a long travel for me from germany. :)

this is an excellent all in one lens but if you need a more affordable option look at the tamron 28-200 for sony e.
I would (and do) stick with the 24-105 because of the OSS
@@JakeSloan that’s what I went with! And also threw in the Sony 20mm 1.8 for some astro 🙌🏻
Very informative video. Do you think the ibis on Sony A7iv is able to work with the oss on this lens for better stabilization?
Yes it is
is this the lense you also use on the Vlogging? in this vid?
Yes it is. I filmed everything (including the talking head parts) with this lens. The only stuff filmed with my phone or a drone was the broll that had the lens or me and the lens in it
...and is there any sharpening in the cam or post, some shots seems slightly oversharpened

Fantastic video and review, Thanks!
Thanks!
Fantastic
Cheers Joe
Thank you very much!
Jake Another great video from you. Thank you, Jake. I am a bit confused about F4 for Background blur in videos. is it enough? Good comparable with 2.8 ?
the 2.8 will give you more blur when closer to object. f4 will give you less unless the background is farther away from your subject
@@JakeSloan Thanks Jake again for Quick Reply. Is blur are noticeable between them to affect the quality for professional work? Please you opinion on this. Respect from India.
Now thinking about a zoom lens for A7IV and choosing between 24-70 GM and 24-105. What would you recommend?
for all around shooting I would get the 24-105 unless you plan to do a lot of low light then definitely go with the 24-70 GM BUT I would wait since a version 2 of that lens is on the horizon!!
@@JakeSloan Thanks a lot for your commentary. Is 24-105 has metal body or plastic?

I own and enjoy the 24-105mm. As you walked through the grass slope, I noticed how wet it was. Wet likely describes Alaska. So you need to do a video discussing “best boot brands.”
Also…do a comparison with the Tamron 35-150.
Nice!!
I think the 24-105 is one of the most underrated lenses out there.
I couldn't agree more! It's so versatile

@@JakeSloan Thanks
Will you be reviewing the new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2? Also, what about the upcoming Rokinon/Samyang 24-70mm f/2.8 parfocal zoom lens? Thanks.
Not sure on either lens yet. Hopefully.
Wow, Whittier AK ? what a lens.
Yes it is!
Ah I am torn between this one and the Sony 24-240 for my A7 IV which I just got. The extra zoom is amazing, however the 24-105 seems to have better image quality (and a stable f).
Agreed!
I enjoy watching your videos.
fantastic! I used a 77mm filter directly on the lens threads and I did not get vignetting Cheers!
I've seen the photographers go to F8 or so to work around vignetting. Ok, time for me to watch a million more videos on lenses.
@@JakeSloan Thanks, maybe I should try a setup just like you did.
can you tell name from your uv filter ? that red color i like :)
That’s from freewell gear and it’s a variable nd
Awesome!!
May I know if the manual focus is linear (the same amount rotation corresponding to the distance change) on this lens?
It does have a linear focus motor and responds very well to the focus ring
It Is a great lens. I bought It 3 years ago and it Is most of time in my camera. I also love prime lens as 35 1.8 and 85 1.8
Those are also fantastic lenses!
I only use it as a walk around lens.
agreed! I am hoping Sony releases a version 2 of the 24-70 soon as it definitely showing its age
@@JakeSloan if they make it as great as V2 of the 70-200 GM that would be awesome! I've grown to love Aperture rings.
Hello. Thank you for this awesome review!! Getting hyped to buy this lens and a7iii. Can i ask you in what bitrate you render for you 4k videos and also if you use 2pass or cbr? Your videos are crisp like h*ll :D
I use final cut and I export in full quality. so I don't have the options for 2nd pass etc but thank you for the kind words
I am hoping for a 24-105 v. II !!
Me too
What audio system are you using?
This was a mix of deity d3 pro and deity pocket wireless
I’m seriously thinking of selling my 24-70 GM1 and pick this up. I rarely use F2.8 so I think F4 will be sufficient for what I do.
I love it for a run around lens. Most my UA-cam videos since this one where recorded using this lens
@@JakeSloanvideo with my A7IV is one of the reasons I’m interested. The 24-70 is amazing for video but it’s a tank on my gimbal.
@@twowheels808What did you end up with?
can you compare to the tamron 35-150
Unfortunately not at the moment as I don’t have one
please compare to 28-200 Tamron 2.8-5.6
I will work on that
I really want this lens since I only have the kit lens for my a7III right now. The Image quality and better focal range is good enough but is the OSS any better? The kit lens has OSS too but it's really bad and the a7III IBIS isn't as good as the a7SIII.
I just don't want to buy a gimbal but still need steady footage for video :/
the OSS on this is better than the kit lens but not a massive amount better. really the only way to get extremely smooth footage is a gimbal
