Hey guys, thanks so much for checking out this video! Was a lot of fun to make, I'd love to know in this thread who your favourite Brazilian Surfer is? Also if you want to see more videos about Brazil, I have a recent episode about the history of Samba in the Favelas.

First off. Mad love to my South American brothers and sisters. 2nd everything they touch turns to gold. Skating, surfing, race car driving, even bullriding and of course football (soccer). They dominate, love that a 3rd world country with no infrastructure for surfing produces the best surfers. Me being Peruvian, having the history and geography love to see my brothers and sisters from South America dominate. Thank you for posting this vid. Its only going up for all. Obrigado Brazil!
There's no "natural talent" of a whole country. Either there's a culture of playing a sport (football) or INDIVIDUAL talent of some people, like Senna.
Na F1 não temos mais pilotos, quem sempre comandou lá de verdade foram os britânicos. Na real, até quando a gente ganhava, era por uma equipe britânica (McLaren, Williams e McLaren).
That is the same thing bro. No sponsors before, to "now the economy is better and my middle class parents can afford me until I show my skills for real" and "now the Brazilian market is taking some considerable market share on our company, lets sponsor some Kids from that place".
Sports that don’t require huge amounts of technology are far easier for “lesser countries” (budget wise) to compete and excel. It’s why exhibition/demonstration sports at the olympics often see more evenly distributed medals until the larger countries start funding those sports and they gain both a technical and training advantage that produces better results. Another factor is the emergence of heroes that can drive the popularity of the sport in said area. What you’re seeing is the first gen of Brazilians coming of age who grew up with Brazilian surfers as heroes. It’s no different than when a city gets a pro sports team for the first time and one generation later you will start to see more top level athletes in that sport emerge from that area. This is just anecdotal observations over the years, specifically with sports teams and how they influence youth and that generational effect is quite obvious.
