  • The largest one is the young male, Maurice. Bigger than his Mom, now.
    Asheville, NC.
Update-8/19/2019: A clarification. The first to walk up the steps is Maurice, followed by Simone. Their mother, Maïté, appears behind them and stays on the grass. She's the one who looks worse for wear with the most brown patches. Solange is the last to show up. She always was the shy one.

A lot of times most wild life would not want to fight a human. The calories a wild animal uses to fight would be hard to get those calories back. Human flesh is highly acidic to animals and may cause them bad food poisoning, so even if they kill us, it wouldn’t be in their best interest to eat us. The only time you may be mauled is if you’re near their territory or they or in the verge of starvation death.

@@Nathan-zw7nq way, way smarter than dogs. bears are the most intelligent mammal native to north america. bears are super intelligent, doing very high-level planning like setting "peace treaties" between matriarchal tribes so they can share foraging territory; they have a complex language of both vocalizations and body language that they teach their cubs..they communicate "through space" by leaving different types of paw prints and scent markings. many of the herbs First Nations tribes used for food and medicine were discovered by them watching which herbs bears would pick. bears understand the way different plants affect them, for instance eating clay to counteract diarrhea brought on by plants with diuretic effects.
bears are seen as this "scary apex predator monster" like tigers, especially because of shit like Grizzly Man (a reckless guy doing incredibly dumb shit, basically asking to get eaten) but they're actually surprisingly genteel and non confrontational for an animal that can kill pretty much anything at will. people who have worked rehabilitating bear cubs and studying bear behavior have found that bears are unfailingly kind and gentle to those they trust and see as "family". for bears raised from a young age, there has never been an instance of a bear "reverting to its instincts" and just attacking its caretaker. they understand how much more powerful they are and are intentionally careful with their human "foster parents", instead playing rougher with their bear siblings. bears have an excellent memory and remember people for life, and they're emotional animals who mourn when a family member dies.
it's for this reason that in many indigenous oral traditions, bears are venerated and seen as a holy ancestor - "grandfather in the fur shawl". bears might technically be an apex predator but they're mainly foragers, opportunistic carnivores. they are critical to the ecosystem and act as stewards of the forest. far, far more than their "vicious brute" reputation.

I’m impressed how you have established a gentle rapport with the bears! That young bear understood that he/she was getting a gentle reprimand for standing on the step. The bears CLEARLY know they are welcome - but only as long as they give you a certain amount of space.
I think it REALLY helps that you talk to them. It lets them know where you are and I bet they can tell if you approve or disapprove of what they are doing by the tone of your voice. The better these bears understand the tone of your voice, the less chance for a misunderstanding. Also, they might know other humans and the tone of THEIR voices express the same ideas (in general).
The younger bear now understands where his/her boundary is at your house. He/she is welcome to approach the first step, but no further. My bet is that the bears feel better about knowing where the boundaries are, because they CLEARLY want to feel welcome.

But still there are a lot of idiots here who try to feed them every time they meet them. In some parts of my country bears now live close to cities, sometimes you can see them even inside residential quarters.
Never feed wild animals, especially hand-feed! Wild animals should fear us humans and try to say out from us.

+Black bears aren't as inclined to feel threatened like brown bears do, so they don't attack AS often, but when they DO, their intent is very different from a brown bear's. A brown bear USUALLY attacks out of defense of themselves, their cubs, or a food source. Once they've neutralized the "threat", they will usually leave the scene. (Not always, though....they've been known to consume humans, as well). However, when black bears DO attack, it's typically not in defense of anything, but is predatory and that bear's intent is to consume whatever it is they attacked. That's where people get lulled into a false sense of security. Because attacks are so rare, people assume they're not as aggressive as brown bears, and they are and are actually more dangerous. If they expend the energy needed to attack, they're not going away empty-handed. This is why people need to treat them with as much respect as they would a brown bear. They're the kind more likely to finish you off and make a meal out of you. Facts. Another scary fact is because they're not entirely carnivorous (meaning they eat a lot more plants and berries than meat), they're not terribly efficient when they do kill. In fact, they often start consuming something before it's even dead. It sounds terrible and gruesome, but it's the truth. I live in a state with the highest concentration of black bears anywhere in the U.S. We know a lot about them, and they've learned to keep their distance from us around here. That's how it should be, for both the bear and the people.

@Major woody I bought a house in the mountains of NM about 5 years ago and the owners son told me that his dad was feeding a bear. The next spring he showed up and he was obviously not afraid. Dogs chased him off and he returned. Told the game warden what was going on and he gave me rubber buckshot and hit him from the porch at close range and have only seen him on game cameras not closer than 100 yards of the house and I'm cool with that.

that's probably a good way you went about that. Personally, I'd be terrified of my dog or other dogs getting killed and/or eaten by a bear. Dogs instinct is to run right up to it and start barking. What are the chances that doesn't scare the bear off and causes a fight?
Apparently a bear has been spotted in my suburban neighborhood recently. I will not let my dog off leash at when its dark out and even during the day she isn't leaving my property.

    • @knottchu6159
      @knottchu6159 4 роки тому +36

When I was an 8 year old kid many decades ago, I remember the JW’s pulling up in a car & walking down our sidewalk Saturday morning. My mother would see them coming and yell “Everyone down, turn off the lights, and don’t make a sound!” Each time we would do that, they’d knock on the door and then eventually walk away (but it was awkward and stressful). My mother would always say, “I wish they’d stop bothering us.”
[Bare in mind, I’m paraphrasing the next part of the story as it took place decades ago]👇👇👇
Until one time, Mom didn’t see them coming down the sidewalk but I did.
Being the ‘lovable pain in the neck’ I was at that time😏, I ripped open the front door just as they were about to knock and said, “How come you knock on stranger’s doors this early on Saturday mornings?”
One of them replied, “Because we speak we others about the Bible & the Kingdom of Heaven.”
I said, “Does God give you permission to do that?”
They replied, “Yes, I believe HE does.”
I asked, “ Well, how can I be sure about that and know what you’re saying is true? Do you have a signed permission slip from GOD? (Keep in mind for perspective, in the 1980’s - kids needed permission slips to go on field trips, be late to school or roam the hallways in school).
One JW replied, “No, young man GOD’s permission doesn’t work like that. Is one of your parents home?”
I answered, “Yup, my Mom’s out back but you guys scare the crap outta her so it’s probably better you talk to me.”
One of them says, “Why do we scare your mother?”
I said, “Because you remind her of that creepy cult preacher from the Poltergeist 2 movie that tried to convince Carol Anne’s father to let him inside their home to talk but he was really a bad man.”
The JW Group of 4: “Ohhh, well tell your mother we’re very sorry and we won’t bother her again.
I replied, “Okay.” (Closed the Door). Walked out back like Pacino in the Godfather and said to my Mom, “I took care of the problem for you!”
Mom was distracted but said, “Okay, thank you, dear! Wait, what problem?!”

And I learned why. I started feeding wild turkeys at a rural property I worked at, 9 first, then 8 or 9 includig chicks arrived, finally by August there were 26 at feeding time. Got so I could walk among them to toss whole corn. They grew big, healthy, toms fought with their reflection on my truck's chrome bumper, followed me on various chores ( all 26!). Then the hunters came...how stupid and selfish I realized I was...
I left the summer job with a sick feeling in my stomach that I made it easy to get them. And this was an 80 acre spread! They were food motivated. I will never feed a wild animal again, and wild turkeys are - my favorite wild bird!
      Aloha

@@oceanmartin670 I think susan was replying to the original comment. But damn, so sorry that happened! My dad once helped baby sea turtles out of their nest to the ocean and then almost every single one after the first batch were eaten by seagulls. A local explained that the first sea turtle group distracts the birds and then more after them will make it to the water in the long run. It's sad, but it leads to greater numbers surviving in the end. My dad learned the hard way to leave wildlife alone, even if it seems like they need help. At least you learned from your mistake! "There's nothing wrong with a mistake, as long as you don't repeat it."

Clearly someone is feeding them. No black bear should be like this towards humans. All the encounters I have had they stand on their hind legs, and then turn tail and run.

Feeding wild predators is a very bad idea.

Chris PL Just because your encounters are different doesn't mean these bears have been fed. And getting close to humans does not mean a bear has lost fear of humans.
