- Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the blood supply anatomy of the proximal humerus and the fracture types that could affect it.
The axillary artery gives the anterior humeral circumflex artery which anastomose with the posterior humeral circumflex artery
The anterior humeral circumflex artery gives the ascending branch which runs a few millimeters posterior, lateral and parallel to the biceps tendon and the bicipital groove.
The arcuate artery is the terminal branch of the ascending branch of the anterior circumflex artery.
The arcuate artery gives the majority of blood supply to the humeral head.
The arcuate artery is an end artery.
Proximal humeral neck fracture can be anatomical neck fracture or surgical neck fracture.
- Anatomical neck fracture equal to the articular piece fracture, this fracture could interrupt the blood supply and could lead to avascular necrosis of the humeral head.
- Fractures of the humeral head of the humerus usually have adequate blood supply with a relatively low incidence of avascular necrosis.
Comminution of the fracture, the dissection and exposure of the fracture, and the position of the implant always plays a major role in the development of avascular necrosis of the humeral head.

Thanks for the video. This helps me understand the blood supply of the proximal humerus much better!
I'm a medical student in the UK and your videos really help. Thanks a lot! The ibone was a good idea too!
Thanks again for your support
Awesome, as always.
Thank you!
THANKS
Nice animation video
@nebraheim thanks
hi there, there are some recent studies stating that it is the posterior circumflex that provides the major blood supply to the humeral head. Is there a difference of opinion?
@kaleidoscopekay thanks
avn can lead to joint replacement
if a young patient has it will they get shoulder replacement?
Could AVN of the Proximal Humerus lead to a joint replacement? Interesting Video!
@TCMAUMEE thanks
@djkuback great
@unburrito thanks
@whatsup149 thanks
