Sylvaine - "Mørklagt" vocal play-through & screaming tutorial

- Welcome to this play-through of the track "Mørklagt" from my last album "Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone" (2018) and following short screaming tutorial. I've gotten so many questions about my screaming voice over the years, so thought it was about time to give a few answers in regards to that and make a video on the subject. The video also touches upon the main basis for a good singing technique and some tips you can use to practice screaming on your own in a safe manner. Like with any other skill, it takes time to master vocals of any kind, so please don't be to hard on yourself if things don't happen right away. Just take care and keep practicing. Thanks so much for stopping by!

I particularly love this kind of video, in which artists are humble enough to share their techniques. Along with the yoga sessions videos, I feel you close to your fandom, as a "reachable" artist, adding the fact that some of us identify ourselves with your songs. Thank you.
Your voice in "a ghost trapped in limbo" is one of the most magical I have ever heard. I wish there was more of that exact feel.
This probably the most humble and ‘true’ tutorial i’ve seen on this subject. Seems like you have a lot of experience teaching. Would love to see more of this type of content. Maybe do some tutorials on how you approach songwriting and composition? I would be very interested anyway, just an idea keep it up! (Another album is also very very welcome ;) )
What I really love about Sylvaine music is the instrumentation + pure emotions + clean voice + distinct harsh vocals basically it almost perfect
More power to your music madam
Your music have a special part in my heart 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🤘🎶🎵
Love her voice & music ... can’t forget the day I ran into the track Earthbound
I’m deeply in love with your voice and music. 🙏🏼
She has it all, this combination of soft cleans and black metal scream is on the next level! Love it
At one point Alcest brought me to your music (but of course).....ordering the recent cd any moment now....why I was checking out some of the tracks and stumbled upon this video.
Keep on being you!
The creepy vocals style you mentioned, they use in horror movies. Some creatures in movies make that kind of sound. I can practice this while at work since I'm in the office alone at nights. I have never heard of this kind of idea about finding the screaming voice before so thank you. I don't consider myself a great singer but it sounds like a good thing to try out.
Thank you for posting a great video!
I am INSANELY grateful that someone has finally provided helpful information on how to approach DSBM style vocals! Been a fan of Sylvaine for years since Ghost Trapped In Limbo and In The Wake Of Moments Passed By :)
For me it's a perfect Blackgaze, I love it. 🖤
I know this song is ancient in UA-cam terms, but I've been a fan for ages. I think there could be a great crowd funder to get you a duet with Neige. It would break the shoegazy/blackmetal/arty crowd. Love your stuf, you're one of the interesting people in music at the moment.
some true black metal screams right there \m/ \m/ \m/
Hi Sylvaine. I'm starting my own one-man band between shoegaze and BM and wanted to thank you a lot for this lesson. I was in a lack of vocal possibilities for my compositions until today and I even wanted to stop thinking about doing the vocals, but you unlocked my voice with your "Fry+yodeling" tip. I never came beyond the "whispering screaming" so far and now I finally heard something loud coming out of my mouth, mimicking Neige's voice on Écailles de Lune. So again, thank you, that could be life-changing haha. Keep on rocking girl, you and your band are absolutely amazing. Greetings from France!
When you have a single or an album pass me the link of your band either on Spotify or UA-cam to follow you
@@marcorson9910 hi, It would be a pleasure!
You can follow my channel on UA-cam and Instagram called Angeleur. I've not posted any full song or album yet, just covers, but who knows when it'll be ready. Thank you dude!
@@thomascetlin9256 You have my full support as a staff from the Retumba team greetings from Mexico.
@@marcorson9910 I've just seen your interview of Year of No Light. Great stuff, keep on rocking guys. Greetings from France
It's so refreshing to see you having fun while singing. Even though the lyrics express something completely different, it's clear you are enjoying the process
(And I'm still expecting for Mørklagt to receive a very artsy and gloomy videoclip)
"Nova" will hit the stores soon - i preordered my copy today. Kathrine Shepard rocks since 2014!
Thanks much for the great music, Kathrine. \m/
Best explanation I've seen. Thank you, and this is one of my favorite song.

Such an incredible voice! I'm loving your whole discography so much.
Thank you for the awesome and clear explanation! I was trying to get someone to teach me the fundamentals of those wail-like screams for a while now but this does it.
Wonderful!
Haunting and soothing, I love it.
Very cool behind the song look here. Thanks Sylvaine! I love your records!!! ;)
You have so much passion in your voice, it brings tears to my eyes.

Great tutorial ty 💗💗 I think i learned it 😊
Amazing tutorial! I’ll practice with these tips, as I’ve always wanted to sing black metal. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for telling people to take care of their vocals, something I have been trying to make sure people abide by. Also, just found your music a week ago and am in love with all of it.
So awesome. Great informational and glad to see you're nailing your North American tour now that some of the madness has lifted from the world.
I'm not sure if I can but I'm trying to make a way to see you play in San Francisco on April 29th. Closest show to my home but very little free time anymore. Hopefully you can share some clips to UA-cam too!
Beautiful
Perfect sound! Thank you for the music you give us!
nice name ;) DiMiTris
I have just explored your band and I adored your vocal techniques. I've been listening to your works to figure out whether this voice belongs to a human or an angel from the Mørklagt song. Respects from Turkey.
What a fascinating and enlightening tutorial. Thank you. Thrilled to be seeing you and the band in October (with Eivor) in Glasgow. Will be a special evening 🤟🏻
I definitely have to go and see you Live in your North American Tour, even if I have to break my little piggy bank. Since all the Live Shows we missed in this long pandemic, it will be a great energy boost I'm sure 🤘
Eres la mejor. Te admiro un monton y espero algún día tener la oportunidad de asistir a un concierto tuyo. Abrazos desde Colombia aquí te amamos Katherine.
WATCHING AND LISTENING FROM BOLIVIA, YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL AND BRUTAL VOICE!!!
Amazing Voice 👌👌👌❤️
Generally I am a melodic death metal person, but I immediately resonated with your music. I really, really enjoy your stuff, thank you for sharing. I have been practicing low growls, but this will be an interesting style to experiment with.

GOOD FELLINGS IN YOUR SONGS ❤👋
hey amiga me gusta tu musica.
cuando vendras por Chile?
Love U
you leave me with my heart in mouth
you are beautiful ❤
♥️
I wonder about "volume/loudness". With distorded scream/growl I can barely reach 60% the loudness I can reach with clean voice 🤔
That is a bit peculiar I'll have to admit, though it seems like the volume of a screaming voice/growl is very individual from singer to singer. Try working on your muscle support, depth of breath and on opening up your throat and see if the low volume still persists :)
Very nice! I noticed that you are using falsetto in some parts, right? And also you're using a mixture of Scream Creaky and Phaser?
I'm trying to apply some of these gutural techniques too and I loved your voice's tone. Congratulations!
Actually, something that isn't very clear from this mini-tutorial of mine, is that the technique I use (fry scream) is voiceless, meaning no actual melodic sound behind the distortion. It sounds like there's a head voice behind, but that's actually overtones that naturally occur :) I use vocal fry as the sort of first step towards the scream, as the vocal chords are doing something that is more similar to the fry scream I use than a clean voice (though not doing the same exact thing). Thanks so much for your compliments and the best of luck on your own vocal work!
@@sylvainemusic Ah, okay! I understood. Thank you for your attention and I really wish the best for you and your band! I am spreading the word here among my friends and I hope to see you guys live soon!
awesome and hope to see you again + 666 +
I miss your song
With black metal make up would be perfect ❤
U re so cute, thanks🥰
Awsome screeching!)) it's quite a rare thing in terms of femalle vocal.
it’s not that rare to be honest. regardless, i love her screams.
Every time I try these techniques I damage my voice.. Especially while I'm drunk during the all day :D
Восхитительная девушка, восхитительный вокал!! ! Я влюблен в вокалистку! ))) С любовью из России )))
Not be taken as an insult but you remind me of poppy and she is also into black metal now I heard
I miss real black metal screams without editing.
First
when I try it, my vocal cords and muscles vibrate. Which is definitely wrong. but good if you have a cough. I have zero singing talent. Since I'm a little crazy and think your work is very nice, I would finance the first pair of glasses if needed 😜
Greetings from crazy Berlin.
