  • Roger Waters plays The Wall for the first night in Chicago at the United Center, September 20, 2010. This clip shows Vera, Bring The Boys Back Home (which was emotional as it was dedicated to the Troops and them returning to their families), and Comfortably Numb.
    Enjoy! Recorded with a Sanyo PD2

    The images of the children greeting their fathers must be so painfull for Roger Waters, since his dad never came back home. I wonder how he does it time and time again.

    Man, I don't cry at concerts but I have to say seeing this live the moment that little girl goes from happy - to shock - to utterly heartbreaking when she sees her father return... It got me every time. Heartbreaking, a hell of a statement and a hell of a show.

    +Emma Bovbjerg . . . Thank you for your perceptive and heart-felt comment regarding the deeper meaning of this piece of Roger Waters's many great works. *You get it!* I barely read the comments under a _The Wall Live_ clip anymore, because i can't stand the pissing & moaning about David Gilmour's absence. (They misjudge Dave Kilminster -- I don't miss Gilmour at all!) People don't want to accept that a rock band is not a gang of best friends. It was only inevitable, and ... _right_ ... that they broke up. When bands re-form after a long-term absence, the results are usually pitiful (Yes, Ocasek/Easton/Hawkes/Robinson, I'm talking about you!)
    Anyway, "fuck all that", and let us remember what a strong anti-war piece _The Wall_ has become in its last tour.

    (2) We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.
    We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.
    This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road. the world has been taking.
    This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

    The rest of President Eisenhower's speech is: (1)
    "This world in arms is not spending money alone.
    It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.
    The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.
    It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.
    It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway. ( >>> 2 )

    With this speech President Eisenhower urgently warned against the dangers that would result from an influential military-industrial complex in the U.S. in the future with it. So he let himself not pull on advice of General Matthew B. Ridgway into the Indochina (Vietnam) conflict of the the French.

    Roger Waters was the one with awesome ideas and David Gilmour was the one that put music to those awesome ideas for example Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall. And the solo of comfortably numb is the best of all time and David Gilmour is the only one who can play it

I saw it in Philadelphia indoors in 2010, and i already have tickets to see it outdoors at citizens bank park for the tour finally in July of 2012. If by some miracle you read this Roger, thank you so much for all you have done. You have my full respect, and I will always cherish the music and the memories you gave to me.

    I find it kinda sad, that it's been 0ver thirty years since The Wall came out and some people didn't get the message. This shows how timeless this album is. I saw, or rather experienced it in London the other day, and after these three songs I felt like smacked in the head with something really heavy. When I saw pictures of children on Bring the...I felt tears coming to my eyes.Epic gig. Too bad that for some it was just two hours of good music. Peace. And don't let the worms eat into Your brain

    I was there Monday night and was totally awestruck. Vera/Bring the Boys Back Home was for me the most moving thing I've experienced in a long time. The scene from the end of Vera (0:16) has haunted me since I saw it at the show. The emotion on her face is absolutely gut-wrenching and brings tears to my eyes when I think of all the kids whose parents didn't come back. And the quote in Bring the Boys Back Home is especially powerful when you consider the source was a decorated 5-star Army general.

    He was there the entire time, they have session players becasue in the beginning of the show they originally had them play the beginning of the show to resemble Pink's band and as a bet by Rogers that everybody loves the music, not themselves, that it doesn't matter who plays it. Plus alot of the songs require 3 guitar players like another brick in the wall part 2. some require 2 keyboardists, like outside the wall. Plus sometimes Mason and Wright weren't good enough to play the material.

  • @TheCheeseUprising
    @TheCheeseUprising 11 років тому

    He's right Waters was so dedicated that he kicked out Richard Wright of the band and almost teared the band apart becasue he wouldn't let anyone else write anything, with the exception of Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell. That's why we all love him becasue he's our stubborn bass and songwriting Genius and will fight the greatest guitar player of all time to express himself. So i give Waters 90% of the praise.

  • @w0mblemania
    @w0mblemania 12 років тому

    I think you are confusing my view on Waters, with my views on war.
    I haven't said anything about war itself. (Personally, I think Afghanistan is mostly a waste of time and lives.)
    I don't think Waters respects soldiers at all. He sees them as an evil unto themselves, and only says he "supports" them for political reasons. In the same way that over the last decade, US Liberals have "supported the troops" (when in fact they haven't.)
    Waters doesn't support soldiers, never has.

  • @w0mblemania
    @w0mblemania 12 років тому

    The bit about respecting troops is total BS.
    Waters is a long time hater of the military. This song was written as a protest against the Tories (Thatcher in particular), and Waters has no love of either the military or the people who serve in it.
    Waters' father was taken from him in war, and he's never let us forget it since. Fine, understandable. But don't say Waters supports soldiers. He doesn't, and never has.

  • @tff1293

    @xfilian1 Thank you for saying what needed to be said. I saw in philly in '10, and already have tickets to see him outdoors in philly in '12, and it was the best show of my life. The only thing that was missing because of Gilmour's absence was a name. Don't get me wrong, Gilmour has written some of the greatest guitar solos in music history, and is one of the greatest musicians around, but this is Roger's masterpiece, and it can stand alone without gilmour. It's an unbelievable piece of music

  • @xfilian1
    @xfilian1 13 років тому

    @elocrellim Gilmour contributed to three songs out of 26 so saying the album would not have worked without Gilmour is nonsense. Afters Waters had conceived the piece, his main partner in putting the album togther was Bob Ezrin. Dave contributed the chord sequence to Comfortably Numb which is great but it does not prop the whole album up. Gilmour cannot write on his own - hence the reason he had to draft in a load collaborators to help him after Roger left. Great guitarist yes - great writer no

  • @elocrellim
    @elocrellim 13 років тому

    @xfilian1 Uhhh dude. Why can people shut up about Gilmour being "just a guitarist" he's not. He's a musical genius. Without him the song your currently listening to would be nothing. Before Gilmour stepped in Comfortably Numb was only about 2 minutes. (According to Waters, Mason, Wright, and Gilmour). Besides the fact that he's a gifter guitarist and writer he also has the voice of an angel. So. I summation. Sure The Wall is Water's album. But without Gilmour it would never have worked.

  • @xfilian1
    @xfilian1 13 років тому

    @onimusha514 Funnily enough, I saw four of the Wall concerts in the UK. One of them was the concert at which Gilmour appeared. Of course it was very, very special to see David and Roger (and Nick, of course) up on stage again. I will never forget it. However, this concert does not need Gilmour - Kilminster does an amazing job of the solo - better IMO than Gilmour did when he appeared on that particular occasion. You will be blown away by this gig and will not be thinking about Mr Gilmour.

  • @xfilian1
    @xfilian1 13 років тому

    @gilmourguitar123 Obviously the song Comfortably Numb would not have been the showpieve it is without Gilmour's solo. I honestly don't think it would have affected the popularity of the album as The Wall is not about individual songs so much as it is a singular piece. It is a rock opera which, as a whole, is far bigger than its constituent parts. If any song could be credited with putting The Wall on the map in terms of sales, that would be ABITW Part II.

  • @xfilian1
    @xfilian1 13 років тому

    @progfreak425 You claim to be the biggest Pink Floyd fan out there, yet it is quite clear from your post that you have absolutely no idea what makes Floyd special. How can you describe the most visually stunning concert the world has ever seen, with people crying in the audience it was so moving as 'boring' and 'having no soul?' If you think that Roger is full of shit, best you stop litening to Pink Floyd all together, I think you would be better suited to Britney Spears CD.

  • @thejourneyman123
    @thejourneyman123 13 років тому

    @nikovolta and special this album gilmour just helpet with some notes for some few song. so the music ain't written by Gilmour.
    and since u know so much, did u know that Gilmour played the bass guitar in "hey you" and 'Roger play Gilmour's guitar?
    btw i don't hate Gilmour, i like Gilmour, and i wish that PF would be Re-united, but i hate when ppl talk shit of Roger, to make more cred for Gilmour...

  • @thejourneyman123
    @thejourneyman123 13 років тому

    @nikovolta haha, The Wall was made by Waters, Gilmour had a small part in some songs of The Wall album...
    the whole album is about his father. and Roger's feelings, since his father died in ww2. and Roger had to live without is father in his childhood... and kids made fun of him because of that he lost his father... ect
    i know the whole story, but don't wanna write it down here, but read the history of Pink Floyd, there it says waters made almost every lyics and notes for every song.

  • @thewriter1008

    @burlesonbreeze Okay...you can't deny that the guy with the Telecaster is completely tearing it up. No, he's not David Gilmour. But he's pretty awesome. Lady Gaga really isn't the garbage that people make her out to be. And this is Roger's vision of what his creation should be. He has a right to make it theatrical, and since he can back it up musically, it's not just theater production. Besides, it has a message. How can you insult that interpretation of "Bring the boys Back Home?"

    Great vids! Interesting though - I know these things get changed up a bit as the tour progresses - I just got home from the Vancouver show and during Comfortably Numb, the projected wall kind of did this twisted warp thing starting around the first guitar solo, where it sorta folded in on itself. It looked cool. I almost peed when Roger jumped up against the wall and it exploded into pieces like it does here. Very effective! Such a great show. I wish I could have seen it more than once

    So Ike Eisenhower was not the badest post-war president of the UNITED STASIS OF AMERICA. But Noam Chomsky wrote around 1990 that if the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged. So it's the highest time for establishing NUREMBERG 2.0. A right-wing version is already online - I miss the left-wing equivalent to it.

    @JATO457 I respectfully disagree. If you listen to The Wall for the comfortably numb solo, you're completely missing the point. If all of Gilmour's solos were taken out, It would still be one of the most impressive pieces of music ever written. That being said, Gilmour's solos are as good as it gets, and he will always be the greatest guitarist in my book.

    Why cant poeple shut up about Gilmour? This is Roger's album. He wrote all of the lyrics, 90% of the music, came up with the ideas and concepts and designed the stage show. Gilmour is a great guitar player in a world full of great guitar players - Waters is a fucking genius and the skills necessary to create a masterpiece like The Wall are unique.

    How do they tour this so fast. I mean damn its a huge, huge show. How is it possible to do it so many times in such a short period of time as far as it getting set up? I would love to watch them set it up

    I dislike the number of phone and camera screens I see in the audience. You can watch the performance through a screen anytime you want, you went there to see it with your eyes.

    Anyone know the list of songs that was played before the show start ? I'm looking for the song sung by a lady in a jazzy voice. It was played a few songs after Imagine. Thanks !

    @PinkZeppelin1000 i was thinking the same thing last night in chicago. they just simply cant do it. then i had my ipod on random on the way home and korns version of brick in the wall played and it seriously sounded like the guy was struggling.
    I don't know how to play but Gilmour must have something these others dont' have.
    PINK PLOYD NEEDS TO TOUR ONE LAST TIME!!!!!!!!

    wow, I know this was one of the first shows of the tour, but didn't expect to see that there's no twirling effect during comfortably numb as in the show I attended (Houston)

    Would anybody be interested in a website specifically for concerts and music? A place you could go to just like a facebook with your own page and your own blogs and reviews of concerts, new albums, songs, and bands, plus the ability to upload videos and pictures of concerts?
    I'm thinking about starting a site that can do all of this. Kixas.com.
    Thanks for your comments

    I experienced the concert in Copenhagen This was one of the most precious moments of the concert.
    The girl that sees her father - imagine how she must have missed him, fearing that he would get killed. All those feelings are let out in this moment.
    Immediately after that Roger throws it back into our faces: That not only are we sending soldiers away from their families (children) to war, but these soldiers are also destroying the lives of other children.

    Gilmour is not the only one who can play comf numb! I'm a huge DG fan but there's no question D Kilminster is a better/faster player than DG.

    @TED1082 I was in Mannheim too. And to those people, who are writing, that they almost cried... I can admit that I was crying, it's not a shame. With my 24 years, I can say: it's worth to live.
