    Joe try not to worry about the fence. I can see what the committee is talking about if an elderly person were to take a tumble sometimes if they end up in hospital with a broken ankle or leg they deteriorate fast. That could be what they mean by risk? I know you will make a fantastic fence and it will be a nice addition to the plot.

    I was thinking you could build a shallow planter with a trellis attached for climbing beans there to help screen out the neighbors and give yourself some privacy. So, maybe that fence could be something pretty too.

    It’s a pain to be asked to put a fence in but just think how nice it’s going to look wish that we could do that on ours. Keep going your in such a positive place you have worked hard to get here so the only thing todo is keep going up. Well done guys so glad to see you back doing what you do, your old videos helped me and my hubby and son build our allotment 3 years ago. ❤❤❤

    Joe, look at the situations with committees and allotment plots in the past… (I’ve had the same shit) don’t aggravate them. You need to keep a plot for your mental health and business… keep quiet and do what you need to keep your plot…… keep quiet so you don’t end up in the same situation. Don’t call them out if your end game is to keep your plot. Just follow the rules job done, don’t moan about it…. You know what happens, it’s not worth it Xx

    I had an allotment for about three nanoseconds, because my garden was quite small and didn't get much sun, front or back. I figured out quite quickly why I got one so quickly ... I'd only been there a couple of times with my two, beautifully-behaved children and then I had my "Welcome Meeting" in the evening. I had barely sat down and been given my key for the gate, when I felt I was being attacked by the, presumably, Committee Members (about 5 middle-aged to elderly men and one middle-aged woman taking Minutes). I didn't expect them to pop a bottle of Champagne, but instead of the "Welcome", my "transgressions" were gone over. I had casually mentioned to one allotment member that I'd already found a lot of broken glass in the soil and was concerned my children wouldn't be able to help around the plot, but that was clearly me "complaining". My children - who went to a private school and were universally known to be delightful, had made a grave error in popping over to the next couple of allotments to say, "Hello!" I was told, in no uncertain terms, to keep them, "under control". I was warned over and over again about what I could and couldn't grow. The sole female there kept her head down and said nothing. At the end of this list of tickings off I was asked to, "Wait outside until (we make a decision) (I hope I recall that correctly, because I thought the allotment was already mine and not provisional until I was "approved")". Being quite a polite person and completely taken aback by this "Welcome", I took my bag and coat, leaving the keys on the table and left, completely. I came back the next day, when the gate was open and removed the plants and other things I'd already invested in for the allotment. I'm not sure what they thought and I don't care. It was a hideous experience and, instead, we moved house to a much, much bigger garden. I think the problem is that people who generally don't get to boss other people around get a sniff of "power" and become utterly obnoxious. I'm sorry your allotment Committee have taken their Nanny-State powers to heart and feel the need to make proclamations. Will tripping over raised beds be the next "risk"? I like the idea of planters and trellis to form a moveable fence (to take with you if you move). The half plot I was given was long, shaded and utterly overrun with brambles and other difficult weeds, so they clearly don't think they have to present anything tidy to the next allotment holder. Do remember the gate with "Watch The Step" on the entrance to the area you've lowered ...

    Joe it’s health and safety gone mad mate. I do risk assessment for my local amateur drama group and I have to put everything in that could cause an accident and have to ask what is the worst possible outcome which is usually death but then have to ask what is the likelihood of someone dying tripping over a wire for instance. That is a low risk. So someone dying as a result of falling down is probably low but still a risk. On saying that what about the trip hazard of the board at 1:00 which was probably there when you took on the plot. As you say it is a pain but a fence will help,define your plot so there is a positive to this, which having been a subscriber for many years I know how you always try to look positive in the adversity.

      It was indeed already there when I took the plot. Thank you for your down to earth and factual comment that makes more sense than some others as I can see you have have watched more of the video. People are so fast to say I just need to accept it lol I’ve built the bloody fence today! I’ve accepted it, I make good any bad situation I just forgot how judgemental people could be. UA-cam is a pain for that lol anyway undeterred I will continue. People are jealous is a common comment I receive sometimes daily on my videos. You’re a legend Gareth I appreciate you mate

    Yes, it's only because it's a communal path. Even a few stakes and a tape warning works, till you get the barrier done. Health and Safety is there for people, who are daft enough to walk off the edge 😅

    you are doing an amazing job on your allotment , as for the drop i think you have made it safer because you can see it now , and why do people need to walk so close to the edge , the path is very wide.

    I was wondering if you were going to put a fence there. It might be disheartening now, but it could be the best thing in the long run. Can't wait to see how you build it.

    A fence is a good Idea (first thing I did) it will keep out rabbits for starters! I suggest you get yourself onto the committee so you can understand what their thought processes are and maybe have some input, I was chair of an allotment committee, it can be a bit of a slog to get entrenched members to change but it is worth it.

    I think it’s quite a deep drop for whoever mows the grass. Ideally a railway sleeper so the mower wheels can run along it…..also depends how old the committee

    Someone dying by falling down that little drop is a bit extreme but more likely twisting a ankle or break something On my allotment site my plot neighbor behind me has dug his plot lower than the natural ground level, I walk pass this plot every time I visit, it is very dodgy and has fallen once and recently twisted my ankle but that is because the plot is overgrown.

  • @AngelaM745
    @AngelaM745 Рік тому +1

    It's a bit overly precautions but I understand someone could misstep and twist a ankle. Nevertheless a fence would really smart 💚 and all the progress is so absolutely lovely, it will be amazing, that's for sure

    in fairness, it is about a 6" drop, it is on the side of the path and someone could loose their footing specially in the dark, just accept it and it will look nice with a fence

    I am new to your channel I have come in at an interesting time, with you breaking ground. Have you thought about using pallet wood for your fence. I get the feeling you are a pretty handy chap so this may be a way to keep the committee happy for free or for little money immediately. Pallets are very easy to source too. Good luck.

  • @pinknanum4308
    @pinknanum4308 Рік тому

    You will get it sorted. You've done it all before. Try not to overthink it or see it as a set back. To be honest, If I was walking along that path, I would trip over a blade of grass and be rolling down the hill. So for the safety of people like myself, It's probably best to fence it off. lol

  • @MsArtistwannabe
    @MsArtistwannabe Рік тому +1

    It’s a tripping hazard because of the drop off at edge of path. It doesn’t take much height to hurt someone if they trip. I think a little pallet wood fence would look fabulous. Especially with your talent with pallet wood. As my daughter says when something like this happens. No one died. It can be remedied. Hoping you can get some good pallets for free.

    them coming over and saying that is a bit stupid tbh but its bureaucratic bullcrap but someone can drown in an inch of water and my neighbor's kid died by just tripping over a brick and bashed his head on the grass and he died that's why I won't get an allotment I've just converted my garden

    Can i suggest a conversation with tge committee about how high they recommend making it.
    That way you cant be seen to be ignoring them. If you ask for suggestions on height etc shows you care and are willing to take on board what they are concerned about.
    I know it can be difficult but always helps to be seen to be listening.
    Not telling you how to do things, infact great to see your positivity

    Just playing devils advocate, it doesn’t take much of a fall and a knock to the head to cause serious injury or more. We’re not all young pups on allotment sites 😂
    Your committee would have a fit looking at the access to my plot. I’m isolated from the main site. My access is via woodland, and I have to cross a fallen tree trunk like a balance beam to cross a bog. It’s like an episode of Takeshis Castle every time I go up 😂
