Vin, the opening and closing riff in this song is one they've used over several albums in a chain of songs called "The Killchain". The songs are World Eater, Cenotaph, Embers, Powder Burns and ending with The Killchain.
I second that.
The band War Master also has this riff in their song Mass Cremation. It sounds extremely similar to Bolt Thrower.

Hate to disappoint you. Vin will go straight to Trump, Obama, Bush, drones, Syria, Iran and back to Trump. I mean I'm barely 13 min in in this review and we are already deep into US politics although it HAS NOTHING to do with Bolt Thrower.

This was an essential pick iirc. Legendary band. This is classic, take no prisoners stuff. Gotta love it. You were pretty right on about what a cenotaph is. But it is specifically a monument for people whose remains are not at the site of the monument. For example the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in DC is a Cenotaph.

@@jazzyb4656 Which is something I wish many bands would do. Not even if their members die, but leave. Look at Suffocation. Only remaining member is Terrance Hobbs. He's a great guitar player but it just isn't Suffocation anymore.

Bolt Thrower are the perfect illustration for "it's not about the what, it's about the how". Similar to WASP, AC/DC, The Ramones etc. they really only have one song. And with that it becomes all about the execution.
And boy, do they execute...
I've never heard that comparison in that context before but it makes sense. They are kind of the "stripped down/less is more etc" band of Death Metal. The AC/DC or Ramones of Death Metal. Others are similar, but they just arent Bolt Thrower.

I was lucky to catch them a couple times in Finland. One of the best live bands I've seen, and I've seen a few. Their stuff might be "simple" according to some, but they knew how to play it and play it well.
Be careful with those bands, hipsters metallers might get mad. Better compare them to Unsane

This particular song refers to the particular cenotaph in London, raised to victims of WW1, in front of Downing street, where British government resides.
It's song from '90s and refers to British Involvement in wars in Yugoslavia, Iraq, etc while being on same sides in WW1.
Bolt Thrower is all about board game of same name deep down into medieval dungeons of Europe.

I assume in Bolt throwers case cenotaph refers to The Cenotaph in Whitehall London , a memorial to British war dead erected after World War One . The direct translation is apparently “Empty tomb “ which makes a lot of sense considering how many unmarked graves there where on the killing fields of France and Belgium .
Fun fact: Earache records are based in Nottingham UK, as is the HQ of Games Workshop. Bolt Thrower's penchant for Warhammer 40k garnered the attention of Games Workshop, who made the coolest album covers for them!

It's been years, but it finally happened. Bolt Thrower is one of the best Death Metal bands, unlike many other old school death metal bandd that came from thrash metal their first 2 albums are firmly rooted in crust punk, which has always been a genre very closely tied to metal.

I expected Sori not to like it, based on what I've seen before.. but I thought Vin would like it more. I was watching the video and casually headbanging, as I always do when I listen to Bolt Thrower, riff after riff, and expecting Vin to get into it, definitely not expecting him to give it an 8.9 because of "extra points" for the lyrics, haha. I wonder if a newer song like "At first Light" or "When Cannons Fade" would have gotten a more positive reaction.
I feel like Bolt Thrower is one of those bands where you have to experience the whole album to really feel the weight of each riff. Outside that context, I can see why he's not as into it. All things considered, 8.9 is still a pretty high score. We're just used to the inflated 9.5's, 9.8's, and perfect 10's that he gives songs that he vibes with right away.
You did catch the gist of it in my opinion. Bolt Thrower lyrics are often about the wars the UK has fought, not just glorifying them but focusing on how much it sucks to be the guy on the frontline. Why are we dying - and killing these other guys - for reasons we had no say in? In some periods it was even fashionable to shame men into joining the army by implying they're cowards if they don't enlist! After WW2 there's few European countries who ever want to see a war again. We still have to disarm old air-dropped bombs once in a while in every country that war was fought in.
The loudmouths that want to start fights and win wars should be the first to be sent off with a rifle and a helmet. Maybe that would make them understand that war isn't a game to watch on TV but real people dying.
As they said in the Troy movie - war is old men talking and young men dying.

A cenotaph in general terms is a grave without bodies. The one on London and other places is a war memorial, but there are thousands around the world not related to war.

Hellz yea!!! I LOVE Bolt Thrower (rip). Listened to them since "in battle there is no law". I also used to chat with Karl on twitter often. SUPER nice guy. Karl's newer band since the passing of their drummer Martin "kiddie" Kearns are called Memoriam which includes members of old school DM band Benediction. They're AWESOME and very Bolt Thrower like. Bolt Thrower also really helped me learn guitar and octaves.
Bolt Thrower. Great band.Simplicity is strength. Death metal don't need to be super technical. Bolt Thrower is heavy, groovy, dark and powerful. Lyrics about war, honor, history and warhammer world. Best album Realm of chaos highly recomendet. Dark and heavy as fuck. Greetings

Oddly enough the intro riff of cenotaph is the continuation of outro or fade out riff in the world eater song.

All their lyrics are about war or historic events. My first encounter with them was the song K-Machine. I think Honour, Valour & Pride is one of their most coherent releases and K-Machine is a hell of a catchy song. Hope you'll get to Benediction too.
I just found out this channel and never expected to see soooo much metal with wich i grew up with... From the more then 16.000 metal songs i have, i find it unfair to put just one so im going to sugest 2 hehehe "tears of autumn rain" by "Eternal tears of sorrow" and another spiritual trip called "A.E.O.N." by "Sybreed".. Bolt Thrower were one of those who shaped my definition of fucking bad ass. Coming from that I just couldn't take Black Metal serious... just couldn't.

@@bigwade4490 entombed are far better than BT. they have less albums that are all-around great like possessed but both bands masterpieces are far better than BT. Left Hand Path and Seven Churches get more buzz than any BT album for a reason
