Q. Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A. We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
Lymm is where our narrowboat was born, a child of Lymm Boat sales just round the corner :) From there it was hoist onto a lorry and transported across country along the M62 to Goole. I remember watching the boats go past and thinking 'one day that will be us'.

Stockton Heath, Thorn Marina, London Bridge Pub. My MIL grew up there and used to dive off of Red Lane Bridge when she was a little girl in the 1930s and 40s. It is a worth a walk around with small shops and at least two other pubs, the Red Lion and the Mulberry. Hubby's grandfather was born in the Red Lion. Lots of family history there. We cruised it June 2015. Going back when the world regains its sanity.
It was as if that bridge was a time tunnel, going from grey skies to the blue and sunny skies. We really do live in a green and pleasant land, easy to forget how beautiful our country is until you see it through the eyes of another. A lovely, and very relaxing vlog, thank you. Take care.

Lymm is just an amazing place to stop - we used to go to the Mill and have grilled cheese on toast ( never had anything like it anywhere else since ). Good moorings other side of the bridge to town. Amazing butchery there and a good supermarket. Always stopped at Lymm both ways (if only to have the cheese on toast) That bakery is just amazing. Miss it so much

I have fond memories of Lymm. Some 40 odd years ago when I was just a small child my parents had a cruiser moored at Scarisbrick and Lymm was one of the places we used to go to on trips.
It’s a lovely town! And a nice bakery too! M
Did I hear that correctly? (4.16) Daresbury Lavatories?..... Sure its a high tech location I used to work their 25 years ago when it was Daresbury Laboratories.... must be a mix of accents and my hearing combined with a wonderful tropical storm. Strange weather, weird haze to clear in a few minutes to a fine day.... anyway Daresbury Lavatories ha ha ha... some old friends would have plenty to say and agreements.

Thanks! Loving England, though sometimes the little cultural differences can lead to a real good laugh. “Keep your pecker up” doesn’t quite translate and Jo had to explain it meant “stay cheerful” here... which is SO not what it means back home. M

Hey!! That's us at 3:30, waving madly (well, my wife is). Does that make us UA-cam stars? Glad you like our local area - you're in Cheshire here, and while there are certainly some industrial parts (Runcorn and Northwich for example) this is mostly a rural county and canal cruising is the best way to see it.
Not sure if that qualifies you as stars, but possibly planets? M

I see the IWA have clearly explained at SPC locations its the boater and chosen mode of craft that has to be at, or close as possible to the relevant challenge to count.??????
It’s a little unclear... in theory it’s a shot of a person and the boat in the location, but in quite a few such locations it’d be damn near impossible to get that shot without a drone or someone in a helicopter! M

Thankyou for another beautiful leisurely video. Very relaxing. I thought I knew England pretty well, but am seeing stuff with you on your canal travels I'd never seen before. I've walked and cycled a fraction of the towpaths over the years, it was always enjoyable in a seredipitous way, and when I retire I hope to do more. Must be nice to do it by boat, though. Maybe look for tour boats like you saw at Llangollen.

I have been watching your channel for some time now along with a few other narrowboat channels. For some reason it just hit me that on the English waterways traffic keeps to the right like the roads here in the US even though on the roads of England you drive on the left side.
Yeah... personally I’m of the opinion that it’s because boaters are more practical and rational than drivers... but Jo looks at me funny when I say that! ;-) M
Unfortunately only just seen this otherwise would’ve offered you use of our washer and dryer, so glad Runcorn was ok for you though!

We try not to point cameras into too many houses, just got people’s privacy, but you’ll see a few where we see one that’s up for sale. M

Nope. We’ve gotten a few less than positive comments, but no one stating they did a thumbs down. M
I was wondering, what kind of fuel economy to you get on your boat? BTW your vlogs are wonderful, its a bucket list item to take a canal holiday before i die. Fair well!
It’s pretty hard to figure out a fuel economy that makes any meaningful sense, since we don’t travel on roads and roads don’t have locks to contend with. You sort of have to think about it in terms of the hours that the engine is running as you cover the smallish distance involved. Typically it’s about £100/month and a half. M
Confusing that the Bridgewater canal is not in Somerset.
Yeah, the Bridgwater and Taunton is in Somerset but the Bridgewater is in Manchester, it’s named after the Duke of Bridgewater.
I see you did some neat 'parallel parking'? Is your bow thruster electric or hydraulic? The only one I've ever driven was hydraulic, as was the main drive, which was fine, except....... Nobody mentioned that if you are, say, turning with drive on and you want a little more 'turn' and decide to try the thruster, that is when you find out the total hydraulic power is set by the throttle setting and the bow thruster divides that power by some proportion. So neither steering 'moment' is what you thought it was! Nice vlog though - what is Jo' taking pictures of? She must shoot hundreds!
@@millomweb Many narrowboats have an hydraulic pump coupled to the gearbox, high pressure hoses to connect this to a hydraulic motor mounted direct on the prop. It means the engine can be mounted more or less anywhere the designer wants - I've seen boats with the engine mounted under what would be the cratch. In order to mount a bow thruster, another hydraulic motor is required, hoses to connect and a three way valve - off; left; right.
I'm sure a boat builder can describe the advantages and disadvantages of both systems, but very briefly; electric thrusters are a major draw on the battery (which battery I wouldn't know) and will take a while to recharge. On the other hand, the disadvantage with hydraiulic systems is as I described in the comments. Once the thruster is selected on, an adjustment of the overall throttle is required to maintain the balance and if you shut it off, you should really return the throttle to the original setting.
@@millomweb I think the quest is not necessarily efficiency, but effectiveness, cost and reliability. As for no stern gland......err, no. Unless the boat is initially design to have a 'wet motor' and not have all the mechanical components within the hull, there is still a need to have a stern gland which, after all, is not a major reliability component.
As for no gearbox, I'm not sure. Probably not, but a heavier duty three way valve would be needed. Of course, the thinking for the future is to have an all electric boat, with state of the art batteries as the ballast, solid state control systems and almost all over photovoltaics. No doubt a very small, containerised, near silent generator would be backup to a limited, but expanding canalside plug in charging.
I’d prefer a hydraulic bow thruster, it would be MUCH more helpful. Ours is electric and really only useful in extremely short bursts, and its power is so limited that it’s primarily of use when mooring up. Hydraulics would be a bit more complicated to use, but much more helpful! M

Definitely no lottery. We’ve been living mainly off savings from my last couple of jobs plus some income from Jo’s house being rented out. I was quite fortunate in my career, but definitely not lottery level! M
