The color shift is noticable on screen base came out great, this is a fantastic job Boyd really enjoyed watching the videos on this project A+ my friend.
Probably the best build, I have seen of this model on utube have watched your builds for many years on utube but this is definitely your best work,! Great work Boyd live long and prosper 👌🖖 my best, mike
I have built many of these and a ton of D-7's But I have to say YOU WENT WAY OVER THE TOP on this build....Hats off Boyd...And as other modelers have mentioned ...I have never seen a shuttle bay look this good!!!
Thanks, great kit and worthy of a give it your all effort. I give the credit to the shuttle bay interior decals from HDA Modelworks for the look. Just put some decent lighting in there and it comes right to life.
i think we're all agreed here, that you surely can paint but this is a new high water mark. The weathering is, to me, ideal. (Can you imagine the Klingon hull-painting crew detail?) And now the new shuttle bay is just remarkable. A thing of beauty.
wow, amazing final ! You painted the entire kit without using paint masks ? Lot of patience and time ! The ship is spectacular , thanks for sharing, will start mine soon !
I built two of these for myself. The first was basically straight out of box with my own lighting and the second was HEAVILY modified into Kronos 1. The first kit went together like a dream. The second one had the same issues that you mentioned on your secondary hull.. but I managed. The research that I put into my K1 build revealed quite a bit of Star Wars kits that had been cannibalized into that model and I had to find or replicate those parts at half of their original scale... that was fun.
Being around Christmas now there's plenty of led strand lights micro LEDs, they come with battery packs and operate with AA bats I've been using them for years also some come with flashing units and multiple color LEDs or you can use your own color LEDs I light the whole interior and all navigations looks great just adding food for thought.
There's a giant hobby store outside of Atlanta that I went to for the first time today, and they happened to have this. Its nice to stumble on this video and see the completed model. Looks awesome!
Really nice and helpful. Having seen the motion control model in the 90s, I think I figured out the weathering. Classic tank model, you pile on pigment powder or ground pastel, soak it with thinner and let it dry. It looks awful at first, but you can scrub at it with a brush to remove and leave it in the cracks. It's a nice dead flat filthy finish, and you can polish some spots to make them satin. Thanks for all the info!
Wow! Absolutely incredible work Boyd!!!! This is the best version of this kit that I've seen anyone do so far! Perfect coloring, weathering and lighting. That shuttle bay is just so cool looking. The base is the perfect finishing touch to such a beautiful build of this kit. Absolute great job!!!!
@1:51 -- In THIS light, it actually DOES look screen-accurate. It's the first time I've seen that model, with that paint job (by anyone), actually LOOK like what I saw onscreen. It looks greyer in this light. I was paying closer attention to the movie footage and it looks like this. I'd still say the final onscreen version looks closer to a medium-dark grey than it does green but it does seem to show green undertones. It had to be the lighting and film processing that changed the color that dramatically from "real life" to "onscreen presentation." Star Trek: The Motion Picture was literally finished at the last minute and they say the release copies were STILL drying as they shipped them to theaters!
You gonna do Kronos One next, Boyd? Hahahahahahaaha. Ohhhh... I don't blame you if you take a break from the Klingons for a few years! This one turned out really nice. Your explanation for what happened with the weathering on the shooting model makes sense. It's the first time someone's CONVINCED me it was green! And yeah, I have seen pictures of it, too, but I suspect the pictures I saw (color) were taken before they did the "weathering"/"dusting" for the special effects.
I am waiting on another mother board part so I can start filming again for You Tube. I have been 3D modeling a Klingon Shuttle. If I can get access to the 3D printer in the near future I can hopefully print one in the 1:350 scale for you.
Oh Very Nice Boyd Very Nice I 👏👏👏 Sir. If I ever get that Model or the 1/537 Version I'm definitely going to watch these Videos again. The Display Base you made for your 1/537 version would work just Great with your 1/350 version.
On.TOS the. Klingon ships were grey and med blue. The ones the Romulans used were.olive .drab. D 7''s. K'' tinge class. Is dark green. Must be a touch. of Romulan influence.
Damn shes a beauty! Great job as usual Boyd! Ive just ordered my kit ,thou will be in cupboard for while my skills are amateur at best. But looking forward to the day when my skills are up to par.
Amazing job Boyd! Gold winner for sure. How about a short video of it next to the Refit? (Side by side, facing each other, top down view, etc.) I haven't seen a good video of both of these ships together when they are finished. Thanks!
I emailed George and asked about the white powder and he said the white powder was put on for the electrical shots for The Motion Picture’ and left. It was repainted for the Qo'noS one. Beautiful work as always.
All that wonderful detail work then one mounts the power connector so the cable erupts vertically out of the base, a hideous eyesore and homage to WTF. I am currently deciding which of the 3 "options" to get. I'll be happy regardless as long as I come up with a decent workaround for the hideous connector arrangement.
@@tillmandickson1530 No worries, actually I wanted to do a completely custom base but was short on time & budget so this base was just something I threw together quickly.
Question on the use of a bipolar LED for the impulse crystal in the 1/350 scale movie model. In the first movie I have not seen the impulse crystal in a blue color. It was always amber. Why put in a bipolar LED in the impulse crystal for your 19 and 24 part series on the movie model?
JUST ONE THING... the power cord sticking up at an angle. A possible solution might have been a female connecter on a cord, like the supply end, requiring only a small notch at the outside edge with a few inches of cord trailing. Otherwise an amazing job.
you know... it would be cool if you paint that emblem on the base disk red outlined in pale gold and the klingon destiny- points (represents 3 tribes that created the klingon empire?) black.. I saw that emblem in those colors on TNG at a klingon council chamber.. I thought it really looked good.
Phenomenal craftsmanship all around. Now I have to start my 1/537 D7. Question: Why did you leave the seam apparent on the connection between the wing and the nacelle?
Hi Boyd. She looks amazing. I had a question about putting the top of the primary hull down to seal up the model.....How did you get it on? I had many difficulties on my kit. Did you have to alter some of the inner structure of it to make room for all the wiring/torpedo launcher/engines?
Never mind...just watched your follow up question and answer post build and you said you cut out the battery box...that is what was making it impossible to push both hulls together flush for me....
Great job!!! Thanks for the video. Is there any worry about the weight of the front end, over time, stressing the joint at the neck from the main body?
I really don't think so. The neck and bulb are not super heavy and the wall at the connection point to the rear hull is very thick and strong. I did do some extra internal support work there which I talked about in a followup video. This kit is designed much better than the old 1/537 AMT kit.
Amazing👍 i have a question I'm not that familiar with the studio model but is there supposed to be a gap where the warp nacelles meet the Hull? Just a little something i noticed on yours... i would like to know before i start building mine.
You got me curious about that too and I checked. No gap there on the filming model. I went under the assumption that the engines would be a separate part that could be removed & replaced if it was damaged. I'm working on filling that in now to correct it.
How much are you selling this for? I want to buy this one...not a model kit...lol...this one in the video you completed. Absolutely amazing work. I wish I had the time, and body to do this. Breaking my neck and back (from a car accident) makes it hard to make models lying on my back all day...lol. Thank you for posting this UA-cam video it was a treat to watch.
This is a theoretical question: Why do spaceships always get weathered in movies/TV? There is no weather in space - at least not like on Earth. So unless you've got leaking material, nothing should drag along the skin of the ship in the direction of travel. Battle damage makes sense. Micrometoerite damage, sure. In Star Trek, in particular, they've got deflector shields so things don't hit them. Seems like the paint or other finishes should remain pristine. Ships that can land on planets could have weathering, of course. The "exhaust" marks on the Millennium Falcon are radial. If it is exhausting something during flight, those marks should be parallel with each other. And so on. I'm curious to know what weathering has happened to the ISS. Seems like it should be light.

Of all the examples I've seen online, I like this paint scheme the best. It just flows and looks like it should!
Well done.
