In my opinion, turf shoes are just as good as AG when playing in artificial grass. It's when it rains or the field is wet when you should change to AG... Those Jomas are nice!

Love jomas. I also use them in summer when fg gets rock hard & studs don’t help, or as backup when breaking in new boots.
Very comfortable but the outsole rubber can’t be worn as shoes, too soft & wears easy on pavement.
Joma indoor/sala also nice on turf for extra control if you don’t need to do lots of cuts/turns.

it mostly depends on what you've been used to. as a kid I've only ever used football boots / cleats. so when I tried the turf shoes which are like sneakers, it's a totally different (negative) feeling.

Currently nursing a nasty knee injury from artificial grass. The team conversation after was that maybe turf boots are the safest option as any version of boot with studs risks getting caught in the artificial grass and "locked" in place.
For clarity, my injury came from a 50/50 tackle. We both got to the ball at the same time. I planted my left foot and the studs locked into the artificial grass. During the tackle, my whole body got turned, but everything below the knee was locked in place. On real grass, the grass would have torn and the mud would have slipped/broken up and allowed the foot to turn with the rest of the body, so there may still have been some stress on the knee, but it most likely wouldn't have dislocated.
I think safety should be one of the factors taken into consideration when purchasing or recommending boots. And from my experience, any boot with a stud increases the risk of injury in certain scenarios.
So, for me, the loss in grip from turf boots is far less significant than the increase in safety.
But this is just from what I'm told (and it makes sense), so when I have recovered, I will be trying out some turf boots for myself.

    It depends.
    - If it's a worn out AG pitch with mashed down 'grass' but still has plenty of rubber fill poured into it, the loose pellets will make you slip in TF boots.
    - If the field is wet, you will probably slip on AG with TF boots.
    - Not all TF boots are created equal with regard to traction. Some grip better than others.

Yeah, spot on. The turf shoes are great for Turf fields that relatively flat. They can still clunk up those plastic pellets though especially on turf fields that don't regularly filter them out weekly. Although on the set seasons where you start getting rain on the pitch. They do tend to slip at times, that is where perhaps a FG or AG come in handy.

I think the most important point of wearing turf shoes in AG is that you reduce the risk of injury. Especially knee ones, because they don't stick your foot to the ground when turning. It's why I use them. However the "turf" shoes that I use are the Adidas Mundial Team, which have long rubber studs. They give me the perfect traction with the length, but not too rigid as the usual AG plastic studs.

one of the main difference where tf shoes are concerned vs sg fg ag and mg options is the presence of a normal midsole. so if the surface you are playing on is harder and you find your joints giving you problems from all the pounding, you really ought to seriously consider tf shoes for the additional cushioning they provide. even ag boots have studs on hard soleplates directly mounted without midsoles.

Great video! If I could add one con to the AG shoes that I rarely hear anyone mention, is that if you play as a defender you can really hurt the attacking player by unintentionally stepping on their foot or if you just go for a heavier challenge. When I play with my friends on artifical grass we actually banned AG shoes for this purpose and we all play in turf shoes instead. (there's nothing more annyoing than someone stepping on your big toe with studs :D)

I know a lot of people that wear Turf shoes on artificial grass. I don’t have any since I already have AG boots and where I live you don’t really see that old school turf like the kind they used to use in the NFL in the 80s. I will say though that in the absence of AG boots, I would take Turf shoes over FG boots especially if the artificial grass is old and worn down.

  • @suengwonlee9114

In terms of functional aspects such as traction, responsiveness, and kick, fg/ag definitely should be better than TF. However, the damage to the joint is the opposite. I know some people, especially the relatively younger, may not need it or think that TF is useless. Higher traction means higher resistance and stress to the joint, which leads to an increase in the risk of injury.
I personally ag or mg from puma on ag pitch. Those are pretty good options. Also, bringing TF together as well in case of the body condition or need for recovery.

    I would wear AG shoes
    -on fairly new AG fields
