I’m Yoruba and it’s not news that we’re very hospitable and accommodating which also includes religious tolerance and that’s why it’s common for Yorubas to be either Christian, Muslim or Traditionalists, in fact you can easily find inter religious marriages within the Yorubas.
I am not a yoruba but once lived in Yoruba land. The Yorubas are the most respectful people in this world.

The Yoruba-speaking part of Nigeria is located in southwestern Nigeria which comprises six states (including Lagos) and they are very hospitable and accommodating
though there are two major religions among the Yoruba people which are Islam and Christianity, the traditional religion is still being practised by a good number of people, especially the elderly in mostly the rural areas
Yorubas are indigenous to 10 states which in addition to the ones you mentioned also include Kwara and Kogi states in North central region of Nigeria and Yoruba speaking communities of Edo and Delta states in the southernmost part of Nigeria.

To clear up something. The narrator was referring to Igbo or Ugbo people (now a subset of the Yoruba race, Igbo or Ugbo means forest and it refers to the Yoruba people of the present-day Ondo state). It was not referring to eboe or ibo (now wrongly written and pronounce as Igbo). Yoruba people did not have anything to do with the present-day Igbo people of South eastern Nigeria and in fact, we had no contact until the colonial invasion and the resultant amalgamation.
Louisiana is like the only State in the USA to have sizable numbers of Yorùbás imported in and we are the state with the most diverse groups of Africans brought in during slavery.

The Yoruba people are very religion tolerant. We practice 3 major religions here, Christianity, Islam and the traditional worshippers religion (Orisha)

Till today, the Ooni of Ife (King of Ile Ife) is the most reverred and influential Yoruba king.
Olodumare / Olorun translates to God in English. So, even if a Yoruba person is Christian or Muslim, they still call God Olorun/Olodumare in their native tongue.
Yorubas are the most open minded when it comes to religion. I'd day 40% are Christians, 40% are Muslims and 20% are traditionalists. It'd be very rare to find an extended yoruba family where all the members practice the same religion. Majority of the Igbos are Christians while majority of the Hausas are Muslims.
The Yoruba states are found in the South Western part of Nigeria namely Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, Ondo and Ekiti states. People of yoruba heritage can also be found in parts of Edo and Delta States.

The edo people of Nigeria are closer to Yoruba than any in Nigeria
Worshipping the Orisha used to be the old religion before Christianity and Islam. Some people still worship the old gods today tho.
Christianity and Islam is almost equal in Southern parts, at least compared to the North and East.
Yemoja is used now almost as a synonym for mermaid.
Osun festival is still held till this day as the goddess Osun is one for fertility as well.

The bride price is given by the groom to the bride's family as a sign that he is able to provide for his family and also as an appreciation to the family for raising his bride so well. That is why he also prostrates to his father-in-law, for appreciation and respect.
islam and christianity is not equal in the south. Total south including( south east, south south and southwest. its about 90% christianity to 10% islam) but as for yoruba, South west alone, it's about 65% Christianity to 35% islam.

It will surprise you to know that the original name of the universal deity of the Yoruba, Olorun or Olodumare is the same name referenced to the Christian God, Yahweh in present time. In Ghana for instance, the Akans still refer to the Christian God, Yahweh by the ancestral deity's (Supreme being) name, Onyankropon (the oak on whom when you lean on, you will never fall) or Nyame (the one whom when you receive, you will never go hungry or lack). This is to show us that per the narrative of the colonizers who claimed Africans were devil worshippers and that, they introduced 'God' to us, it's all a lie. Africans knew and had a relationship with God and still do before the coming of the Europeans. I pray that Africans will breakthrough from mental slavery(which was the form of human slavery meted to the remaining Africans on the continent after the trans-Atlantic slave trade) as well as neo-colonialism (cuz although, all African countries have gained independence from their colonizers, certain clauses and laws formulated by the colonizers still bounds the African economy and sovereignty in spite of all the natural resources that we have. Even the US government (the land of the free) threatens sanctions if we dare break from these clauses. It's happened to Zimbabwe and many other African countries ❤
Just wanted to shed some light on your question....In the southern parts of Nigeria there are numerous traditional religions that have survived the colonial imposition of Christianity on the people. One of such traditional religions is Ifa which is yoruba precolonial spirituality. Although most of these local religions are generally frowned upon due to colonial influence many adherents practice their spirituality along with either Christianity or islam while others maintain the old ways in secret. I hope this clears this up somewhat for you.

The yorubas and Igbos are actually the tribes that get along the most in Nigeria. I'd say they have the highest amount of inter-tribal marriages. We're neighbours, we occupy the southern part of Nigeria.
Most of the stories told about those gods (orisas) are not myths. Those gods (sango, Ogun, osun, yemoja) were actual human beings that lived on earth very many years ago and people decided to idolize them because of their great deeds and the powers they possessed when they were on earth. There are still proofs of their existence and time on earth in many yoruba kingdoms today. For Christians, it'd just be like people idolizing Elijah, Elisha, Moses, Mary, etc for the powers they possessed while on earth.

Yoruba and Igbos don't have the highest number of inter tribal marriages lol 😂. It's Hausa and Fulani that have the highest. Most of those inter tribal marriages that occur btw Yoruba and Igbo majorly happens in Lagos and sometimes other states in Yoruba land. It's the hype around those marriages that makes you think it is that high. Yoruba people can marry anybody, including Fulani, Edo, Urhobo, Ebira, Igala, Hausa and so on
We don't get along with Igbo. In fact, we don't know them until the amalgamation. The narrator was referring to Ugbo/Igbo people in Ondo State. Ugbo/Igbo people is a subgroup of Yoruba race and is different from ebo/ibo/yibo/now wrongly written as Igbo people of South Eastern Nigeria.

Very good content, you guys! Please keep up the good work. To answer your question regarding the intersection of religion and culture. You're right that the Northern Nigerians are predominantly Muslims while the South is predominantly Christians. The manifestation of these 2 imported religions into Nigeria can be traced back to slavery era where the Arab slave traders coming in from the North converted the northern inhabitants into muslims. Likewise, when the Europeans came in through the South, they too converted many southerners to christianity - forcing them to abandon their ancestral religions. However, perhaps the only ancestral religion that endured these tumultuous periods and still practice their faith (although at a smaller scale) are the Yoruba people. And this was in part due to the strong affinity the Yorubas had for their deities and their religion. Also, the millions of Yorubas that were taken to Brazil, Cuba, and other parts of the Americas still retain their Yoruba cultural identity up till today, as well as still worshipping the various Yoruba deities such as Orisha, Olodumare, Osun, Yemanja, and many more. Sorry for the long length.
Regarding the religion of the Yorubas in the modern day Nigeria, it is a mix of Christianity, Islam and the Yoruba religion. History has shown that the South Western part of Nigeria which is the home of the Yorubas in Nigeria, is the most religiously tolerant part of the country. You can find representation of the three religions in one family, where the mother and father could practice different religions and the children also get to choose what religion they would practice.
Regarding the relationship between the Yorubas and the Igbos, there has been a lot of inter marriage between the two tribes in the last three decades.... its now even a form of joke between younger people that the two tribes have a magical sexual and romantic attraction, i consider this very true.
My family Is a typical example half of my family is Muslim on both sides ,my grandad was an imam in the mosque...both my parents are respectable elders in the church but we still buy my grand parents rams for Eid and go still chop ileya food ..

There are 3 religions in Nigeria, Traditional religion and the other 2. Yoruba religion(categorized as a traditional religion) is the most prominent religion out of Africa and it's practiced in Brazil, Cuba, in other South American countries and the Caribbean. In most cases, those practicing the other 2 religions despite the hype still maintain their link with our traditional religions.

Lagos was originally part of Ijebuland. The paramount King of Ijebuland, the Awujale gave the land to the Awori people,a Yoruba tribe to settle it. Lagos was later invaded by the Benin Empire army and became its colony for a while until the Awori people were able to fight back and got the Benin army evicted from their land.
