  • What's shaking, folks! I'm back with another ABBA reaction from their 1979 album Voulez-Vous, and this time we listen to the fun and sassy "The King Has Lost His Crown," a song that does indeed follow nicely on the heels of "Angeleyes," though I think it's also more than that. So join me for another top-shelf track from the one and only ABBA. Cheers!

Sultry vocals by Frida and those trademark harmonies make this one of the great tracks on the album.

The opening to this song is one of my very favorites of any ABBA song.

I agree with you that it is facinating to get to know a world of beautiful music that's 'hiding' behind the few famous songs. And the great thing with Abba was/is that they just get better and better with each album. More mature, more elaborate arrangements. Imagine getting to discover all this when you're young and it is happening in real time. I was 14 at the time of Voulez-Vous and still remember the magic of hearing songs like Chiquitita for the first time. Being too late to start recording the cassette recorder so I missed the first few lines, and had to wait forever to try again. No internet instant access then!
I've been crazy about a few other artists since then, mainly Kate Bush (love your reactions of her work too!). She went from strength tro strength for a good while too, but it really did flatten out after The Sensual World. So, never have I experienced an artist going from peak to peak the way Abba did, and that's probably why I still listen to them so very often, even now in 2023 at the age of 58!
Having said all that, I never made the conceptual link between Angeleyes and The King. Love it! This would imply that the next song takes the narrative even further: the guy is obviously back on his feet again, has licked his wounds, and has resumed chasing young chicks......
    🙂

When this was released i didn't quite apreciated it since i wasn't even in my teens and was absorbed in the rest of the 'super catchy bangers' of the album. But listening to it over the later years isolated , i coudn't deny its greatness as an album track and especially Frida's magnetic delivery as well as the great arrangements and clear sounded instrumentation.Btw It's one of Frida's fave track too according to an interview of hers from the '00s.

I like this song soooo much!
I listen to it almost dayly .
Love the Frida's voice 😍 and the way Agnetha accompanies her in the choruses, as if taking her to the highest notes...
    That's awesome 😮 ( to me😊 )
See you soon, Matt & Lucca

I really love this song! Fridas tender and soft voice and the arrangement is just so perfect! Funny enough, I have almost always prefered most of the ABBA album tracks that weren´t hits! Like this one! And others to come on this Album too! ;-)

The timbre of Frida's voice is just 👌. Should have been a bit longer.

"The King has lost His crown" (1979)
Is included in the "Voulez Vous" album
it's a great song (7/8pts) with Frida so sweet in leads voice in the introduction verses,
that change the rythm when Agnetha join her and do a fantástic duet again
I think that Frida is more seductive in her solo while the music begins as a ballad disco,
and then the two female voices in the chorus are much powerful
And the musical introduction is amazing!
ABBA premier these song un a TV special
    "ABBA in Switzerland 1979'
It was the second song , after
    "Take a chance on me"
and all four ABBA members introduction
here is a link with ABBA performed it:

    One date:
in the leave streaming of September 2021,
when Benny & Björn announced the return of ABBA with Voyage album,
the same Björn refers to " The King has lost His crown"
of one of ABBA songs that should be a hit, but it wasn''t
    I love your reaction
Always Is a pleasure see enjoy with ABBA músic
I see in the next vídeo

Your final observations in this video regarding the song "Dancing Queen" prompted me to write this comment. I mean, your insights are always spot-on and you somehow have an uncanny ability to read my mind!
So, there are two more "hits" left on the "Voulez-Vous" album ("Does Your Mother Know" and "Chiquitita"). While these are great, popular tunes, I personally love the album tracks here so much more. It IS interesting to see how a group can be perceived based on their biggest hits, but through your deep dive, you have discovered that ABBA has such a rich and diverse catalogue.

Yes, this song is related to the previous track, Angeleyes. Bjorn really loved this song and thought it should have been a hit. I like the staccato before the second verse. I love the melody when they sang "how does it feel, I guess it hurts your pride, tell me my friend how many nights you've cried". That melody got stuck in my head and couldn't erase it. 🥰🥰

Dancing Queen popular in the States... Great.
But the rest of the world doesn't generally hold it as the most seminal ABBA. In Australia you regularly hear many many ABBA songs on the radio and so many songs of theirs are much more loved.

    This link is even better
because it includes the presentation of the song
ABBA had already been introduced by the voice of the announcer in off
and they sang "Take a chance on me".
Now it's the four of them at the microphones,
waving to the audience and announcing the premiere of the new song
"The king has lost his crown"
    Special note
this is the first performance of ABBA after the press conference
in which Agnetha and Björn answered about their separation as a couple.

In keeping with the disco style of this album, quite a few of the songs (like this one) seem to be about dating and short term relationships, whereas in songs like 'One Man, One Woman' and 'Knowing me, Knowing You', the stakes are higher, and one feels they are singing about marriage and divorce.

What a high-levelled production and recording also not to mentiona that Frida's amazing vocal performance is kinda 'so de-throning' this guy's big ego.
