The music - industry, worldwide; has failed to give Mark Knopfler his due credit in my opinion. This man is a guitar legend and perfectionist. He also sings the lead vocal. Tell me who else could do it so fine. Apart from Hendrix, maybe 1 or 2 others. Anyway, the man is still alive and he is timeless. A Titan!

In these days a big part of his style was playing quiet notes, then loud notes. It creates a feeling of space and distance, and puts you in a trance with the hypnotic backbeat underneath. Very JJ Cale.

Yes, he's so great on guitar. But trying to decide on *the* greatest ever is impossible for me. Too many different styles and nuances.
Whenever I try to compare for the best, I run into things like... Joe Satriani's playing is just SO incredible and perfect that I can't think of a better guitarist. BUT even though the technical precision isn't up to par with Joe Sat, I'll usually prefer listening to
      Robin Trower or Jerry Cantrell
or Larry Carlton, or especially on an electric 6 string.
I'm glad you're able to rank Knopfler the finest ever, though (realizing this is a 3 year old post I'm responding to). I can see why, and he definitely has a distinctive sound that is all his own. 😁

That was a great idea, a good way to put it, and yes, the guitar is that and more, it breaks our hearts, but it's not her so much as it is the expressions of the things that we have experienced. But with her, we can express those things that we have known previously, sad, hurtful, AWFUL, but truthful, and that is Honesty, God Bless our efforts, if they are that, and more.

Your six blade knife can do anything for you
    Anything you want it to
One blade for breaking my heart
One blade for tearing me apart
Your six blade knife-do anything for you
You can take away my mind like you take away the top of a tin
When you come up from behind and lay it down cold on my skin
Took a stone from my soul when I was lame
Just so you could make me tame. You take away my mind like you take away the top of a tin
I'd like to be free of it now, I don't want it no more
I'd like to be free of it now, you know I don't want it no more
Everybody got a knife it can be just what they want it to be
A needle a wife or something that you just can't see
You know it keeps you strong
Yes and it'll do me wrong
Your six blade knife, do anything for you.

This piece, written by Knopfler himself, relates with a six string guitar; brings you fortune, it brings you sorrow. A two-way meaning/double sense, like a two-edged sword.
There's a joy with fame, money, and women... there's also agony, depression, an excuse to avoid reality, struggle... (plain semantics).
Guilty pleasure, cursed talent, benefitted torture (the experience that only real guitarists know, blisters/calluses, long-hour lessons, rehearsals, practicing all day long, etc.) BUT it pays off.
We could say... a simple piece, but for the guitar... skill and a lot of technic, experience, sway, proficiency, mastery... there is only one
*Mark Freuder Knopfler* . Ergo, the band's name DIRE STRAITS, predicament/mess/perplexity.

His lyrics were passionate and observant though most people probably don't perceive him as sexy...but those of us who heard him got it right away. Excellent guitar player, too, of course. You are absolutely correct. I'm a fellow bass player, and this song takes a bit of talent. So Dennis Bailey, do you play any instruments?

    • @FeelingShred
      @FeelingShred 5 років тому +3

Takes talent to play a few slow bass notes? Please let's keep a sense of reality in here ok xDDDD Agree with first post about simplicity being king

Dennis Bailey sometimes it’s about the notes you don’t play

So can complexity. But I know what you're saying. I've been playing the guitar for over 40 years and I just can't match this cat's style. We all have our own style, but Mark just rip's the top right off and it sounds so simple....until you try to match his intensity. You can't do it.

Mark is showing his influence from JJ Cale with this one. The mix is a JJ Cale mix, the guitar layers are taken from JJ Cale. The vocals are pure JJ Cale. Nothing wrong with any of these. JJ has influenced the best in the world.
