Yes, he's so great on guitar. But trying to decide on *the* greatest ever is impossible for me. Too many different styles and nuances. Whenever I try to compare for the best, I run into things like... Joe Satriani's playing is just SO incredible and perfect that I can't think of a better guitarist. BUT even though the technical precision isn't up to par with Joe Sat, I'll usually prefer listening to Robin Trower or Jerry Cantrell or Larry Carlton, or especially on an electric 6 string. I'm glad you're able to rank Knopfler the finest ever, though (realizing this is a 3 year old post I'm responding to). I can see why, and he definitely has a distinctive sound that is all his own. 😁
I find that it's more about how well a guitarist can write a composition rather than technical skill. David gilmour is my favourite, even though I know he's not the best guitarist.

His lyrics were passionate and observant though most people probably don't perceive him as sexy...but those of us who heard him got it right away. Excellent guitar player, too, of course. Love "Expresso Love" but listening again after so much time, I think this song is my favorite.
