If you listen to the Chinese script - it has a deeper meaning- what she is trying to project that even if the MIL wins it is because she allows for her to win as she choose to leave and not because she is weak. WhAt she is trying to say is- you win because I allow you to win cause I love him more than to allow him the heartache to having to choose between her and his mother.

I cried over that scene in the movie. I'm not Chinese and had to search what the mahjong game meant for the scene. Coming from that movie to this scene, it makes no impact anymore.
@Chen Uy lol.. 1 based in singapore, 1 in china.. but both are still Asian tho😆 i think some Asian mothers often treat their son's girlfriend the same way like in movies.. some are even more harsh (i'm Asian, and some of the people i know also goes through those tough situation, even some of them still have not reconcile although they've been in the family for years)

This scene disgusts me. Young women are taught to sacrifice their happiness for others and this scene creates a reward for the heroine when she makes that sacrifice. Shengnan was going to give up her and Lu's happiness to make his mother happy. If the rest of the series had played out as Lu's snobby mother wanted, Lu will be miserable, he will go back to the emotionless existence he was in before he met Shengnan. Maybe he will eventually give in to his mother and marry Ms. Li and have the children his mother requests. He will be a puppet for his mother to live her life through. Shengnan would probably recover with time since she is still so young. Both Lu and Shengnan should have told Lu's mother to either accept Shengnan or risk being cut off instead of indulging her snobbery. Society needs to stop making young women the sacrificial lambs of other people's wants.
