- "Jerusalem of Gold" (Hebrew: ירושלים של זהב, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav) is a popular Israeli song written by Naomi Shemer in 1967. The original song described the Jewish people's 2000-year longing to return to Jerusalem; Shemer added a final verse after the Six-Day War to celebrate Jerusalem's unification under Israeli control.
At that time, the Old City was under Jordanian rule; Jews had been barred from entering, and many holy sites had been desecrated. Only three weeks after the song was published, the Six-Day War broke out. The song was the battle cry and morale booster of the Israeli troops. Shemer even sang it for them before the war and festival, making them among the first in the world to hear it. On 7 June, the Israel Defense Forces captured the eastern part of Jerusalem and the Old City from the Jordanians. When Shemer heard the paratroopers singing "Jerusalem of Gold" at the Western Wall, she wrote a final verse, reversing the phrases of lamentation found in the second verse. The line about shofars sounding from the Temple Mount is a reference to an event that actually took place on 7 June.

I agree. I am an American whose mother was a Polish immigrant. I never heard an anti-Semitic word from her. She was filled with kindness for everyone. It grieves me to think that people believed all Polish people hated Jews. That was not my experience!

When I first listened to this wonderful melody it was 1967. At that time it costs $5.00 dollars to hear it once only. Very emotional and very hopeful to me or to anybody else. I visited Isreal in 2007 with the Mainse family of 100 Huntley Street, Burlington, Ontario. I bought a CD with this song on it. Iraeli music is hauntignly beautiful, a tone of sadness between the notes. And the upbeat celebratory songs set my feet a dancin' and my hands a clappin'. I pray for the peace of Jerusalem according to Psalm 122. I decree and declare that all land and boundaries given to Abraham, Issac and Jacob is being restored; no longer will the land be divided. The Holy City by John Starnes is also on the CD. As we were driving into Jerusalem one moonlit evening, the bus driver was playing that song on his CD player. I got goosebumps, and cried quietly. The presence of God was so overwhelming.

Where did that come from. I must tell you I am a little shocked by that comment. Of course we have anti - Semites in Ireland but they are few. I certainly am not one of them, far from it. I support the Jewish people and Yad Vashem in particular. Some Irish people have a problem with the Israeli policies towards the Palestinians but so have some Jews. All governments must be open to criticism both internal and external. If you look for anti - Semitism you will find it but you will also find anti - Irish if you look for it. At the time, both the young men's visions, and the old men's dreams were identical, which was the restoration of the "Old City" of Jerusalem to become whole, and come back into Israeli hands. The people, both young and old, saw the upcoming war as the war of redemption and restoration. As I continue to understand that this great nation, the apple of God's eye: Israel is protected by God and by America, I can see why God blesses the USA. It's because we bless Israel. Woe be unto us all if it ever stops.
