其实马超也没在曹操最强的时候打败了他而是在魏国最弱时打了曹操个措手不及.
赤壁之战是在 208 年但曹操攻打汉中是在 211 年. 虽然相隔三年，曹军还没恢复成为打赤壁的状况所以曹操才要攻打汉中来争取更多的地盘来为挡箭牌. 但是，我们又不可以说马超很烂应为不管曹军有多若，他们还是打过大战的盟军而马超的军队大多数是羌人而他们的战略是突袭专家而和曹军的全军攻打的战略恰恰不同. 可是，马超可以单枪匹马追着曹操不放直到许褚顶了马超的前路也是一种英勇的行为.
Screw it my Chinese isn't good. What I'm saying is.. Ma Chao isn't as "weak" as you think and neither is Cao Cao as strong as you think during this period.
Chibi just happened 3 years prior to Cao Cao's invasion of Hanzhong thus his military strength isn't as strong as before Chibi began cuz you have to keep in mind that Cao Cao suffered about 500,000 men lost be it thru actual death or injured and within a span of 3 years, he wouldn't be able to muster up that strength again thus he was using the most limited manpower to even take Hanzhong.
Also, the combat strategy of both Ma Chao and Cao Cao's forces are vastly different with Cao Cao using grand battle strategies whereas Ma Chao's coalition forces are mostly comprised of cavalry forces from the Qiang tribesman thus they're more effective in hit and run tactics which is what initially trapped Cao Cao alot that he had to use espionage to sow discord between Han Sui and Ma Chao to even gain an upper hand.
However, that being said, for Ma Chao and his forces to slay Cao Cao till he's panicking and that close to claiming his head till the point that Xu Chu had to come out and block Ma Chao's path is commendable and actually pretty scary.
